Tigers Place Ivan Nova On Injured List

By TC Zencka | August 15, 2020 at 12:22pm CDT

Detroit Tigers’ starter Ivan Nova is headed to the 10-day injured list with right triceps tendinitis, the team announced. Right-hander Anthony Castro has been recalled to fill the roster spot.

Nova, 33, was brought in this winter to provide a veteran and reliable presence in the rotation. The Tigers are flush with rotation prospects – Matt Manning, Tarik Skubal, Casey Mize, among them – but in the near-term, Detroit wanted to reliability to join with injury-bitten and/or inconsistent arms like Jordan Zimmermann, Daniel Norris, and Michael Fulmer. Nova is off to a rough start, going 1-1 with a 8.53 ERA/6.34 FIP through four starts.

It’s not yet clear who will step into Nova’s spot in the rotation. Dario Agrazal is not likely to be the guy, per Evan Woodbery of MLive.com. The Tigers aren’t likely to need to name a replacement until Tuesday or Wednesday’s game. Fans and pundits alike will be hopeful that Mize gets the call here, but the Tigers have shown a reluctance to bring up their top rotation prospects.

Leave Mize and Manning down in Toledo, why rush them. Anthony Castro has been a starter in the minors, so has Burrows and Funkhouser

Because they aren’t being rushed. They are ready.

Mize is a 23 year old man and this year doesn’t count for his team control. It’s a no-brainer to bring him up.

No! Save Mize for June 2021….Maximize Service Time.
Tossing any top prospect into a 40 game 2020 stretch
          is “fools gold”..

I thought Nova was, like, 36 or something so it struck me to read that he is 29, but…turns out he’s 33.

Love MLBTR, but good god do they need a copy editor. Just to make sure links, stats, and basic info is correct.

But it’s so hard… making sure links are right… the players age is right… spelling and grammar… ugh.

I was surprised at 29 also but thought early to mid thirties.
The Tigers are trading one former Pirate for another.
I thought that Nova was a really decent pitcher with the Pirates and that Agrazal had some potential along those lines too.Neither throw real hard but generally give a decent five innings. They both seem to be fairly healthy too which is very important now.
The Pirates should have kept both for back of the rotation starters but they do not throw 95 so that means that they are not good enough,

This year won’t count for Mize’s eligibility if they bring him up right now.

He will only get better pitching against pro batters.

      Tigers have nothing to lose.

      Your wrong.

Only you and Al Avila feel this way.

The way you think makes me mad.

Tigers arent going to make the playoffs and will go a big losing streak soon. They are not good.

Leaving him in Toledo is such a waste.

It is time for Mize or Manning! What in the hell are they going up accomplish down in Toledo this year? It is not doing them a damn bit of good to continue to throw to minor league hitters when they are continuing to dominate. Even if they get crushed, at the very least they’ll get some experience and know what they need to work on the next time we play a “regular” season. Making the playoffs as one of the last teams in a year where over half the league will do so is not something to thrive for. This year is the type of season to get guys like Manning, Mize, Skubal, Faedo, etc some starts under their belt so we know what we have. Im not saying Torkelson or anyone drafted this season. But maybe a Clemens or a Schwindel or a Cameron, get them some AB’s and let some of these kids take some swings. Because we already know what we have (or don’t have really) in players like Stewart and Candelario. That would be what I’d do with the rest of the season, but just my opinion.

I would extend Norris as #5 or move Carson Fulmer to #5 in rotation
(Carson Fulmer started for the White Sox and is a former top draft pick
who just needs work to iron out a few things in his delivery and location)…
Forget about: Mize, Manning, Skubal ro Faedo for a short season of work.
Save the top prospects for June 2021 to maximize service time for the
next Tigers run of pennant contention..

I get the whole service time/Super 2 arguments, but come on Tigers. Bring these “kids” (Skubal, Mize, Faedo, Manning, Greene) up, and let them get their feet wet already.

Playing in Toledo camp isn’t going to do them any favors whatsoever in terms of overall career development. You only get better by playing higher level talent, so bring them all up and give them a taste.

You create some excitement for the fan base, and you give the youngsters a glimpse of what the next level looks like so they have a more tangible feel for it all.

And yes, when I say bring the kids up, I do include Torkelson in that group as well. We know what Jeimer Candelario is, and isn’t, going to be for us. They aren’t going to bring him back. (Of course he will then sign with the Reds, and become the next Eugenio Suarez, but that is a whole other issue.) Torkelson is the future, and the very near future at that. Just give him the ABs now, and let’s see where we are at with these guys.

Just a few thoughts: Jimenez…worst pitcher in baseball? Norris…really looking good. When will there be a consensus re: starting catcher? 2021…re-sign Cron to bring along Torkelson at 1B (agree Candelario is not the answer). Any of those young 3Bs ready for a look? Skubal threw only one bad pitch, albeit again to start the game. I liked what I saw from Skubal, Mize, Norris. Norris ready to go 6? Avila’s pulled some real boners, but not trading Boyd last year was the biggest: Asking the world in return for that guy? Gotta go with Victor Reyes every day—does Travis Demeritte(sp?) warrant a real shot? On this team, without a doubt.
