MLB Announces Suspensions For Jimmy Cordero, Rick Renteria

By Anthony Franco | September 26, 2020 at 6:38pm CDT

6:38PM: Cordero is appealing his suspension, as per several reporters (including Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times).

4:39PM: Major League Baseball has handed down a pair of suspensions arising out of last night’s game between Chicago’s crosstown rivals. White Sox reliever Jimmy Cordero has been suspended three games, while Sox manager Rick Renteria was tagged with a one-game ban.

MLB determined that Cordero intentionally hit Cubs’ catcher Willson Contreras with a pitch in the seventh inning last night. Earlier in the game, Contreras flipped his bat after hitting a home run off Dylan Cease. Cordero, Renteria and pitching coach Don Cooper were all ejected in the aftermath of the HBP. Cooper received an undisclosed fine for his actions, MLB added. Renteria will serve his suspension in tonight’s game against the Cubs.

Cordero’s suspension isn’t expected to affect his availability for the postseason, hears James Fegan of the Athletic (Twitter link). Of course, it’s not clear the 28-year-old Cordero should be a big part of the White Sox’s postseason roster regardless. He’s got a 5.61 ERA with a mediocre 17.8% strikeout rate this season.

I’m surprised that MLB was so aggressive here but I like it.

If you want to follow the “unwritten rules” and hit a guy who shows up your teammate, that’s fine. But expect MLB to follow the written rules against that and penalize you

A hit by a pitch rewards you first base. A suspension is not warranted. Take the drilling, walk to first. The end. Those aren’t unwritten rules.

Just watched Urena take a liner off his throwing hand. He was nibbling outside the entire day thanks to his reputation of being a head hunter. I guess you’re cool with pitchers constantly getting hurt.

Take first base. Haven’t seen too many star players missing 2 months or ruining his career getting hit in the arm. Stop treating grown millionaires like preschoolers.

I don’t follow the teams in the central (NL or AL) so I know virtually nothing about Cordero. That said, over the last few years I’ve come to the notion that the “old ways” in baseball need to die. Who cares if a guy flips his bat? Really……does it matter? I have a 16 year-old who’s been chirping in my ear for years about this, and I don’t think there’s anything wrong with a celebration after hitting one outta the yard. It certainly doesn’t warrant getting intentionally thrown at. You can severely injure someone, all because they “disrespected” you by hitting your meatball over the fence and then flipped their bat?Come on! Another point: bench clearing “quasi-brawls.” Stupidest thing in team sports. No one really fights (which is good) and everyone just huddles around, while one or two guys act tough for 30 seconds. Should be banned by MLB. Let some of the old traditions die and let the new young guys create the atmosphere they play in. They are the future of the game,
      not the past.

I’m not entirely convinced Cordero intentionally threw at Contreras. Dylan Cease faced him again after his bat flip and would’ve retaliated then if he wanted to. It appeared to me that Cordero pitch was meant to be up and in and it just got away as he doesn’t exactly have the best control. At most a warning could’ve been issued but it was an ejection instead. This suspension feels like an overreaction and not just because I’m a Sox fan. I’d say the same if the tables were turned. Losing is one thing but the embarrassing beat down by the cubs is punishment enough.

Iron balls—-you obviously missed the first pitch of the at bat. He threw at him with that one and just happened to miss. The second one hit him. In the back, not high…served the purpose. If there is such a thing as doing it “correctly” he did it.

And let’s not forget——Contreras leagues the majors in getting hit with a pitch this season….hitting him in the back made it obvious.

@toasty, IMO, there is nothing in baseball that warrants a pitcher throwing a pitch at another player. It is simply too dangerous and too likely to severely hurt a player who gets HBP. I realize it has been a part of the game forever, but with all it takes to get to the big leagues, putting someone’s physical health in such a high risk situation is not acceptable – regardless of what that player or a team mate did To ”deserve” it. MLB should get super strict about this and severely punish teams/players who throw at other players. Let this part of the old game die and become a model for Little Leaguers and youth players by teaching them to deal with “disrespect” and “adversity” in healthier ways than trying to physically hurt opposing teams’ players.

Frank Thomas was spot on with his criticism of the Sox last night. You would think that after getting swept by Cleveland they would show up to a game of this magnitude last night. Yes, you’re against Darvish and yes, games can get away from you in a hurry, but that was brutal. Let’s hope they show up tonight and tomorrow.

They need to get at least 1 win just to stem the tide. Otherwise, an 8 game losing streak going into a best of 3 on the road doesn’t instill a great deal of confidence. I don’t expect them to win the WS, but I’m hoping at least to not go 2-and-out. Just making it to the 2nd round will do wonders for the team heading into next year. They need that experience of winning something in their first playoffs in over a decade, and not to lay down like lambs.

I love ambiguity like “let the kids play”. That can be applied to anything even, well, hitting players if one thinks about it. It’s dumb. Showboating in sports has been frowned upon In the past because it’s a sign of arrogance and being self-centered. Baseball is a team sport. The greats like Mantle, Robinson, Williams (Ted), Joe D… those guys exemplified true sportsmanship.

Plus there is a place in baseball to hit a player (away from the head/groin) but not for a home run. But a suspension?! Wow. Just hit one of their players and be done.

In the NFL you can have an awesome end zone celebration but not in baseball after hitting a no doubt bomb. No wonder the younger generation isn’t following baseball. That and a 3 hour game. They are still stuck in the 1920’s.

I don’t understand this viewpoint and everyone on the internet is all over it. Do you honestly think 12 year old Vinny is now gonna watch baseball now because the batter can bat flip? You don’t think a good bean ball and a bench clear/story line/rivalry is better for the game? But if they can bat flip and now all of a sudden every 12 year old is watching a 3 hour game?
This has nothing to do with bat flipping and everything to do with mlbs inability to understand new age media. You look at guys like Dodgerfilms who years ago made videos of himself catching homers at dodger stadium. Every game he was there. Mlb came up to him at the stadium and told him he couldn’t film. He stopped filming. You’ve got guys like jomboy who post Mlb clips on YouTube. Guess who takes the money from his videos (or at least used to)… Mlb. There are blackout restrictions, you can’t post video in Twitter (used to at least, not sure now). There have been people with big followers say they are afraid to post Mlb videos because they are afraid they’ll get banned. Why would anyone try to promote the game when Mlb is all about taking the revenue? They are making strides but I promise you the game on the field is in good hands. Don’t mean to sound attacking, I just want to state what I see and feel is the real issue

Batters are allowed to do anything they want. That’s partially an unwritten rule. Pitchers are supposed to just serve it up, throw some gas and prep for TJS. Then the next man comes up.

Hitters Crowd the plate more than ever. No suspension warranted. Unless proven 100% that it was intentional (probably was), Cordero shouldn’t miss a game.

Exactly. The unwritten rule that hitters are allowed to wear padding all over their arms and hands, crowd the plate and hit balls they wouldn’t normally hit without the padding has transformed the game and destroyed the careers of many pitchers in the process.

People need to wake up. Stop the suspension crap for what is an actual rule and an actual play in baseball: the hit by pitch. Let the players handle it. Umpires should step back too.

Looks like no division crown for the Sox. I suppose the only benefit is they don’t face the Indians in the first round. Of course they could easily face the Yanks, which isn’t any better for them. Their only options (outside of a miracle comeback, as I write this) are home against the Yanks, or at Minny or Oakland. I’d be more confident if they hadn’t lost 7 of 8 and 2 of 3 in blowout fashion to the Cubs.

Lopez is like Trubisky for the Bears–maddenly inconsistent. He’ll look great and then, like a flip of the switch, look horrible. For those of you who missed it, Trubisky got benched in the 3rd Quarter. I say this because very possibly this could be Lopez’s final start for the Sox. Talk about mirroring each other. BTW, I didn’t watch any of the Sox/Cubs game, and I am now very thankful I didn’t.

Either Lopez will turn into a great reliever or be one of the next official busts for the Sox. I guess we’ll find out in a year or two.

Hopefully the turnaround starts on Tuesday. Otherwise we will blink and their playoffs will be over.

Who will be Game 3 starter next week for Sox if there is a game 3?

Foster or Crochet?! It’s gonna be a bullpen game.

Dunning on a short leash. Much better command than Cease.

          Dunning didn’t last long yesterday.
I don’t think it will be him.
          Too many walks!

I’d have to think Dunning with Cease backing him up (or the other way around). I don’t see it being a bullpen day, you need to keep that pen fairly fresh if you make it to the next round.

I agree with cwsAscension, if it’s Dunning (or Cease for that matter), he will be on a short leash.

At least the Sox won’t have to travel for 2nd round of playoffs.
They will already be in Cali!

I would have liked the Sox to win their Division. Only needed 1 extra win this last week.

But I like the matchup vs. Oakland.

Looks like Robert found the swing that TA has lost!

If they can get that offense going again, they can potentially do some serious damage in the playoffs. But they will have to do a serious about-face in a 48-hour period to get the offense back to where they were, and they are facing some good pitching in Oakland.

Luzardo pitches Game 1 and is a lefty, so it will be interesting to see how that unfolds. Bassitt pitches game 2. Then who knows in game 3 (just like the Sox).

That was a shock…I never looked at the final score yesterday. Last I looked, it was 10-1 in the top of the 8th. I didn’t realize the Sox almost came back. Just by accident, I happened to notice the final score was 10-8 a few minutes ago (about 24 hours after the game ended). Not that it matters, they still lost.

Wouldn’t have that been something if they won the division in that fashion. Oh well, on to tomorrow.
