Eloy Jimenez, Garrett Crochet Exit With Injuries

By Connor Byrne | October 1, 2020 at 3:48pm CDT

3:48pm: The White Sox announced that Jimenez exited with right foot discomfort. The news looks worse for Crochet, who left with forearm tightness.

3:20pm: White Sox outfielder Eloy Jimenez and left-hander Garrett Crochet exited early in the team’s make-or-break Game 3 against the Athletics on Thursday. It’s not yet clear why they departed.

Jimenez led off the third inning with a double before walking off with a trainer. It’s worth noting Jimenez missed time late in the season with a mid-foot sprain. If the White Sox advance, they’ll need him back in their lineup, as the 23-year-old turned in a brilliant second season with a .296/.332/.559 line and 14 home runs in 226 plate appearances.

Crochet, meanwhile, departed in the second inning after striking out both batters he faced. He was throwing in the 96 to 97 mph range, and his fastest pitch clocked in at 98.9, per Scott Merkin of MLB.com. Just about any pitcher would be pleased with that type of velocity, but it’s a notable step down for Crochet, who averaged 100.2 mph on his fastball during his brief regular season. The 21-year-old threw 85 pitches in the season after debuting a couple weeks ago, and 69 of them came in above 98.9 mph, per Sarah Langs of MLB.com (via Merkin).

Crochet, whom the White Sox chose 11th overall in this year’s draft, quickly reached the majors and, thanks in part to his all-world velocity, made a major impact for the White Sox. He ended the season with six shutout innings of three-hit ball across five appearances, in which he totaled eight strikeouts and didn’t walk a batter. He clearly looks like another young star for the up-and-coming White Sox to build around, so the hope is that Crochet didn’t suffer a serious injury in his playoff debut.

If his elbow is going to blow out, then it’s going to blow out. If there are only so many pitches in the arm, the argument is to get as many of those in the majors.

Has the three batter rule been waived for the playoffs? If not, these are the dumbest announcers in the history of baseball.

If it has been waived, I missed it. But it’s not my job to know.

No it is still in effect. The only rule waived is the ridiculous runner in extra innings rule. Although if that rule was in effect, the Reds would probably still be alive. Oh well, still a dumb rule.

Thanks. I was wondering if I was missing something. On the mound visit, they were speculating about Rodon being taken out of the game. And when the intentional walk was issued, they had trouble figuring out why.

The reason was to get Rodon out of the game.

Crochet could be the first guy drafted, skip the minors, play in the playoffs, and have his career end all in the same year.

Sorry I probably shouldn’t joke like that, but it kind of goes along with ESPN’s penchant for making up ridiculously long categories just so they can say someone is the first to do it. Like a guy is the first left-handed pitcher with 3 kids to get 8 strikeouts on his birthday while someone in section 103 was eating caramel corn on a Wednesday.

Look up Brian Milner if you don’t know his story. Almost the same thing, expect he didn’t play in the playoffs. Drafted in the 7th round out of HS, basically went right to the majors, played in two games, got sent down, and after some injuries, he was done at 22.

Imagine going 4/9 straight out of HS and then getting sent down and never coming back.

    Does *this* suck.

Forearm tightness, coupled with a drop in velocity. Isn’t poor control the other symptom?
Hope it’s “just” a flexor mass strain or something like that.

Crochet is an exciting young player, man.
Really hope he’s not headed for TJS.

Best thing about this is that now that the Cubs are off until March maybe you can get some rest…..and speaking of karma, thanks again to the Sox for picking Rodon right ahead of Schwarber in that draft…..Schwarber has already helped the Cubs win a World Series (note the words win and World Series) and that Rodon guy—-still hasn’t gotten a guy out in a playoff game—-especially the one that could have had them advance. Enjoy your time off, Cubs—-in one form or another will be back in the league in 2021.

I missed the first half of the game (at work). So I missed everything I’m about to discuss.

I’m hoping it’s not serious for Crochet, but forearm tightness is never a good sign. And if it’s eventually TJS, it’s not because he got brought up too early. It’s more likely to do with him feeding into all the media hype hitting 100 so often (but I’m not a doctor, so I don’t know). I wish they would teach these pitchers in HS, college, and MiLB there’s much more to pitching than just throwing the ball as fast as they possibly can. Maybe more TJS can be prevented in the future.

Eloy ideally should’ve sat out the series, but with this being the elimination game, they didn’t have much of a choice.

Either Rodon wasn’t ready to pitch since his injury or he is done. It’s hard for me to tell since he was long gone when I tuned in.

Why did Dunning pitch to only 4 batters? I assume it wasn’t injury related. I know it’s win or go home, but that’s a serious quick hook. 1st-and-3rd with two outs and no score and you pull him? And of course no Cease since Ricky burned that card yesterday. I was uneasy about Ricky anyway, this certainly didn’t ease my concerns.

83—Dunning pitched to only four batters because I think Ricky thought the game was on the line right there in the first inning.. Runners on the corners with Olson at bat. That was the plan going in. Crochet starting warming up when LaStella led the game off with a hit. Every inning was important and he had to get that out right there.

Echoing a bit of what you said, I’m no doctor either, but I played ball for years growing up. You can’t throw the ball as hard as you can every pitch. So much focus is put on pitch speed, there’s no accounting for sustainability.

I am not disappointed with the White Sox this past season but it was unfortunate that they are out of the playoffs. It was a nice run in this shorten season but there is a chance we might say some changes at the managerial position. Ricky does not know how to manage his pitching staff. I want Ricky to stay as a bench coach but the White Sox need a manager who knows to make decisions when it comes to the pitching staff. I did not catch today’s game but I heard his decisions were just absurd!

Worst job of managing in playoffs. The series was to big for him. Melvin played him like a fiddle. Young pitchers in roles they were never in during the season.
Everybody knows he’s not good. We now need a playoff manager

Crochet never relieved in the first inning. He was probably surprised by it. Then suddenly he is asked to get ready NOW and fast.

He rushes to get loose. Come into a situation he is not familar with and gets hurt.

Not only a dumb managerial panic move but he may have blown out their first round picks arm who was looking like the real deal.

For the most part I like Ricky but I’m disappointed how he handled that game. The Sox are a good team. They struggled late but be he showed little confidence in them for game three. I understand the importance but it’s as if he was in constant panic mode. That said, Oakland is also a good team and played well. Hopefully they stomp all over Houston.

As of right now we have not heard any news on Crochet’s injury. We should just be positive, think it’s nothing serious and it’s just a strain. Let Crochet get some rest before spring training and gain some confidence in himself for the 2021 season. The White Sox have some decisions to make with Crochet’s role for next season. We know there is going to be opening with the pitching rotation and the closer for 2021.

Cordero and Bummer should be setups, Heuer the closer. Starting rotation
      Giolito
      Keuchel
      Crochet
      Kopech
      Dunning / Cease

      Rodon to Korean League
Lopez can handle long relief with Gonzalez

Marshall might also be adequate for long relief

If they can package some guys for another veteran starter who can eat innings, it would be helpful. But Renteria needs to go, he reminds me of Dusty Baker in hiw badly he handles pitchers.
