Rays To Decline Options On Charlie Morton, Mike Zunino

By Anthony Franco | October 30, 2020 at 10:34am CDT

The Rays are not going to exercise their club options on right-hander Charlie Morton or catcher Mike Zunino, vice president of baseball operations Erik Neander told reporters (including Juan Toribio of MLB.com and Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times). Morton’s option was valued at $15MM, while Zunino stood to make $4.5MM if his option were exercised. Neither player will receive a buyout and both are now free agents.

Tampa Bay is leaving the door open to bringing either player back, Neander adds (via Toribio). They’re particularly interested in retaining Morton, it seems, with Neander noting the parties will look for a “creative” way to keep him in the fold (Topkin link).

Both players had important roles on the Rays’ pennant-winning 2020 club, but Morton is the more notable of the two. The 36-year-old (37 next month) was a Cy Young finalist just a year ago, when he tossed 194.2 innings of 3.05 ERA ball. He took a bit of a step back over nine regular-season starts this season but he still looks like a strong mid-rotation starter at the very least. He reaffirmed that with four stellar postseason starts.

Morton immediately becomes one of the best pitchers on the free agent market, but it remains to be seen how much interest he’ll have in exploring deals with other teams. The veteran makes his home in Florida, a key point in his decision to sign with the Rays as a free agent after the 2018 season. Earlier this month, Morton said he’d seriously discuss the possibility of retirement with his family if the Rays declined his option. At the moment, though, he “is believed to want to continue his career,” hears Jon Heyman of MLB Network (Twitter link).

As for Zunino, the call was probably a bit easier for the front office. The former third overall pick has started just over half the Rays’ games behind the plate the past two years but hasn’t hit much. Since Tampa Bay acquired him from the Mariners, Zunino has hit just .161/.233/.323 over 373 plate appearances. He struck out in 64 of his 140 plate appearances between the regular season and playoffs in 2020. The well-regarded defender hits the market at just 29 years of age, though.

that would be a great pickup for the Sox but I highly doubt he’d sign with them. He’s definitely going to prioritize winning and proximity to Florida (his home) and while Boston isn’t all that far (of a plane ride) to Florida I don’t think he’d feel they’re a true contender. I personally think that they’re a lot closer to being a playoff team then their 2020 record indicated and really could be a playoff team if they signed say Morton, and a few relievers (and maybe a 2B) people forget they’re getting erod and Sale back, and already have a very solid offensive core… so if sale and erod come back strong plus Eovaldi or Pivetta and their rookie continues anywhere near where he was at the end of last season (only allowed like 3 ER in 3 starts!) they’d actually be a competitive team immediately. I’m not saying it’s a sure thing… but they are in a lot better shape than their 2020 record would indicate — but they do definitely need pitching help… particularly in the bullpen. They should absolutely claim Brad Hand for one.

I think the deal with Morton is he wants to play somewhere down south. (Obviously, I don’t get that…but it’s his life.)

I’d love to see it. But I think that’s the longest of long shots.

Morton would be perfect for Atlanta, but he obviously only wants to play near home and I’m not sure if even Atlanta is close enough. He’s still not at home the way he is in Florida.

Yep. 1-12, then add one more sturdy 4th/5th rotation option. I’d even be open to bringing Hamels back at a much lower rate, assuming he’s projected to be healthy by ST. With Soroka back, the rotation could quickly go from blackhole to top 5 in the majors.

dobsonel, it’s been a terrible four years for MLB. I’m hoping the World Series celebration doesn’t turn into a full-blown Dodgersgate. With so much focus on Covid and the election, MLB probably thinks they can sweep it under the rug. It needs to be fully investigated with penalties handed down if necessary. Personally, I’m not into looking the other way just because it’s my team.

Well, it’s actually 12M a year for 2 years. If Brad Hand isn’t worth 10M, in the current realities, nobody’s going to pay twice that for KK, even with all the defense. You can Endor Inciarte for less than half that price, and likely raid the Braves system while doing it.

But ya, they can add some players or money, and move him. And while that player(s) won’t be Franco, it will have to be one of their top 5. Three-outcome baseball, which isn’t going away, depreciates defense, and that’s really all KK offers. As I said, there are MANY cheaper alternatives, maybe not as good, but close enough.

@denistaylor. He ranked/tied for 5th among qualified Centerfielders in Outs Above Average and Runs prevented per statcast. Last year he ranked second for those same categories for ALL outfielders who qualified.

He has the ability to be one of, if not the best, outfielders defensively on a year to year basis regardless of he does/doesnt put on theatrics. If he was Matt Kemp good with the glove, I’d be more inclined to agree with you, but as things are I do not.

Unlike gerrit cole Morton has made it clear he really doesn’t care about the money anymore. His initial deal with the Rays was a massive discount. He could’ve had way more as a free agent last time. This is one time you should probably actually listen to the guy. Not everyone is looking for too dollar and I don’t blame him. Morton is not going to play in Chicago, Boston, NY, LA, Philly, San Diego, etc. As mentioned in the article, he really only wants to play in Florida or else he’ll just retire. He’s one of the few rare birds in professional sports not driven by the almighty dollar. Maybe there is a 25% chance he’d entertain playing in Atlanta for a year since Southern Georgia is relatively close to Florida but I wouldn’t be surprised if he just decides to hang ‘em up and call it a career. I don’t see him pitching for under $10 – $12M and I’m not sure Tampa is willing to commit that amount of money to him in this economy.

Tampa returning to their cheap ways. Never had an opening day payroll of even $77M. They have some good young talent and they were close to winning it all this year. But to keep this team together over the next 3-4 years and maybe actually win a WS they are going to have to spend some money. The young talent will get more money as they move through arbitration and it could take a FA or two to put them over the top. I get Zunino, hitting below the Mendoza line the past two years often gets you waived regardless of how much money you make. But Morton was a solid pitcher and well worth the $15M. Maybe you can get him to sign for less, but that is a cheap thing to do to the guy. He is on record of saying he would retire if he did not pitch for you next year.

Tampa draws the second lowest crowds in all of baseball (only Miami is worse) so it makes perfect sense that they don’t have the money to spend $100M+ in payroll. If fans in Tampa would actually show up to games (pre-Covid of course) then the team would have much more money to spend. They don’t have a lucrative local TV deal either so they get hammered on both ends. Personally, I think it’s amazing what they’ve been able to accomplish in lieu of their revenue shortfalls. The only way this team starts spending more is if they relocate to a bigger market where fans will actually come out to support them.

Tampa never left their cheap ways. And they will have a hiccup of a season here and there but for the most party, they’re a contender. If they lose a player because they became too expensive, they have prospects that can fill the role, or they will pickup someone cheap that will give them similar production. Charlie Morton didn’t do much to help them make the post season, they can easily find someone making 900k

Morton claimed he was all set to retire before that 2 year/$30M offer fell into his lap.

I’m sure a $30M bonus on his career earnings up to that point and being based in Florida with their tax incentives helped that decision along as well.

Think he’ll still keep playing this time, given that he lost out on $9M of that guarantee this season and he will almost certainly have to play on a far less lucrative contract and possibly in a less tax friendly home team location or will he actually hang it up now?

Morton is most likely retiring isn’t he? That was the talk during the WS. Tampa maybe did this to move on and not wait for him to decide.

It is too bad Zunino forgot how to hit after college. He is a great defensive catcher. I wonder how much rushing him through the minors hurt him. He would always have a great month or so thinking he has figured it out. He should find a job just for his Def.

They may get lucky and win a WS depending on this offseason but not with those pitchers. The Yanks are on record for ducking the CBT and won’t have the money for Bauer, plus he and Cole don’t get along. Morton wants to play with Tampa or no one (maybe Atlanta?) for family reasons. So neither of those pitchers are in the mix. And with the rotation in flux and DJ on the bubble who knows about their WS chances.

Morton would only sign with the Yankees for like $20M, given the additional taxes he’d incur and the location away from his family in Florida and the inherent traveling. He won’t get $20M from anybody and the Yankees aren’t going to shell out $20M for even one season of a guy who dropped off like Morton did, even with his very good post season play in 2020.

Bauer is going to require like 1 year/$50M to play for the Yankees and they’re trying to cut payroll, not add, even with all the options they’ve declined so far and their need for pitching. Also someone might very well give Bauer something like 3 years/$135M or 4 years/$170M and the Yankees are *not* gonna even pretend to entertain the thought of matching that. Also I don’t think Bauer actually wants to play for the Yankees, if we’re going by a lot of his own commentary.

There’s no way Bauer is getting $50M from anyone for a one year deal, let alone over $40M/yr on a 3 or 4 year deal. Any one year deal he signs will be under $40M and multi year deals at the most will average what Cole got, if not lower than that. If he gets a 3/$105 offer, he should jump all over it. I just don’t see many teams willing to offer that price this offseason. He might even have to settle for 1/$25M – $30M deal if every owner is serious about reducing payroll to offset their massive 2020 operating losses. This is going to be an unprecedented free agent market that will most likely lead to a player strike or lockout in 2022. Get your popcorn ready!

That’s why I said it- because he doesn’t want to play in NY or for the Yankees, so they’d have to offer him an insane contract to accept and if enough teams do offer him $35M a season it could very well get pushed to $40M and if there’s talk of a 4th season being a sticking point, I could see someone overpaying him to avoid that 4th season being guaranteed if he’s more of a fluke or he’s currently peaking and bound for a serious regression.

I don’t think he’ll get that. I think most offers will be around 3 years/$100M, like you said, but he will push for and someone will cave to a 3 year/$115M offer so he can top the largest AAV and current salaries.

Remember- There’s at least 1 year for $45M in Stephen Strasburg’s deal, so it’s not the crazy of a number to consider for a guy in Bauer’s position.

It was most likely renegotiated to a mutual option. Both Tampa and Charlie wanted the opportunity to walk away from it.

terrible decision not to pick up Morton’s option, Rays keep shuttling fan favorites away to save money and then wonder why they have a s**t fan base. Winning isn’t the only formula to attract fans to the stands. You need recognizable names that fans want to see and are comfortable with. Should’ve never traded away Pham either

By the way, none of these guys mentioned would qualify as “names.” Heading into the World Series, a lot of people who consider themselves baseball fans would have been hard-pressed to name any Rays players off the top of their head. Kevin Keirmaier is a name? On what planet?

Pitch tracker was wrong. I thought Pitch Tracker was reliable, as I’m sure many do. I trusted Pitch Tracker and I shouldn’t have. I’ll cop to that, as I did then when we had that conversation. So, you’re point?

That doesn’t make me wrong here. Again, you fail to see how argument works. You tried to change the argument and got caught red-handed. The conversation, as I clearly demonstrated, was whether names should matter to fans, which of course they do and should. You said they shouldn’t. You were wrong. You tired to switch to whether TB has names.
Now you cop to that, loser, if you’re big enough.

Can’t win the original argument so you move the goalposts yet again.

From 1) Fans like to see name players, to 2) TB has name players, to 3) Pitch Tracker. Like I said, moving the goalposts.

I realize you don’t like it but this dispute is over 1) above, and you were wrong. Fan names do matter. You argued that they didn’t: “maybe they have a s**t fan base because of clowns like you who care more about recognizable names than winning”

If you are a Rangers fan, you do not want Gary Sanchez as your everyday catcher. He is awful behind the plate and has a terrible OBP as well. The one good thing he can do is hit for power. His future is either at DH or 1B; certainly not behind the plate.

We are seeing this all over baseball. Hand just got put on waivers at a one year $10m salary. I was a surprised Britton’s contract option got picked up. Who is going to pay him $14m per year for two years in this market, and at his age? Even if they thought that was even somewhat likely, why not trade a nobody to Cleveland for another younger left handed reliever in Hand for only $10m for one season? Dumb financial planning on the Yankees part. I think there is a good chance Morton re-signs with TB at a $10m rate, with another few million in incentives. He really only wants to play in Florida, and the Marlins don’t need an expensive veteran pitcher, and they aren’t really a contender that a pitcher, who is most likely playing his last year, wants to pitch for.

That was a tricky, unusual situation. A) Britton gave them stellar sub-2 ERA pitching and dependable middle and late inning relief. B) The contract language forced them to make the decision a year in advance and declining the option would’ve left things sour between player and team on a deal so expensive it would have been hard to move him no matter what. It was the best option they had and so they’re overpaying by a few million- they’ll suck up the overpay for the consistent play and a happy, enthusiastic, committed pitcher.

Yes. For example, Britton stepped in an performed extremely well when Chapman missed the first 5-6 weeks this summer. For Britton, 8/8 Saves IIRC. 1.89 ERA/2.61 FIP/1.00 WHIP on the year. He did have a couple weeks on the IL himself. Chapman was out 5-6 weeks, Britton 2 weeks and Kahnle 6 weeks. That’s #’s 1-3 in the BP. On top of what happened to the rotation, starting with Sevy (entire season) and then Tanaka (5 weeks) and Paxton (6 weeks) Brutal.

Zunino? Waste of money, even this year. Their backup Perez gives you defense that’s as good, and he’s still minimum wage. And they can always get “Z” back; I doubt he gets more than 1M offer from anybody.

It’s humorous how some fans think this winter will be baseball business as usual. Pay attention, folks. One pandemic-afflicted season just ended and another is on the horizon. The money just isn’t there. The 162-game season and a full summer of unlimited or any fans in the stands are improbable. Heck, there’s a good chance there won’t be a minor league season.

Management will be super-cautious. Teams aren’t going to be throwing mad money around to fill out their rosters. The 2021 season will see more rookies playing for the league-minimum salary than ever before. It’s going to be a rough winter for common free agents. Those guys will either accept minor league deals or kiss their careers goodbye. Why sign a middling relief pitcher for $3-4 million when you can add three rookies to the roster for less than $1.8 million total? With no minor leagues, these kids will have to play somewhere.

It’s all about the money. The animosity between players and owners this past summer will look like a lovefest compared to what’s coming. Hard times for the game we love.

This coming year is going to be a war for money with all clubs vs- the players association. It will continue till the next collective bargaining agreement is signed in 21. Even though their were record profits in 2019 for baseball owners, The owners see an opportunity to crush the players union with Covid BS loses in 20. Oh! as for the Rays, they made 245million gross with player salaries of 70 mill. in 19 with the 12th best cable deal in baseball, so they are quite profitable.
