Minor MLB Transactions: 12/2/20

By Mark Polishuk | December 2, 2020 at 8:55am CDT

The latest minor league moves from around baseball…

  • The Cubs signed outfielder Michael Hermosillo to a minors contract, MLB Network’s Jon Heyman reports (Twitter link).  Hermosillo has seen big league action in each of the last three seasons, hitting .188/.288/.287 over 118 plate appearances with the Angels.  He can play all three outfield positions, so he’ll provide the Cubs with some depth, and Hermosillo also might yet have some untapped hitting potential as he approaches his 26th birthday.  At the Triple-A level, Hermosillo has a solid .261/.344/.478 career slash line over 748 PA.
  • The Athletics signed catcher Francisco Pena to a minor league deal, according to Bobby Nightengale of the Cincinnati Enquirer (via Twitter).  Pena will receive a guaranteed $600K salary if he reaches Oakland’s MLB roster.  The 31-year-old backstop hasn’t appeared in the majors since he played 58 games for the Cardinals in 2018, which comprises the bulk of his career big league experience.  Pena has hit .216/.249/.311 over 202 PA for the Cardinals, Orioles, and Royals from 2014-18, and has spent the last two seasons in the Giants and Reds organizations.

Looks like the Cubs made a depth signing as the article states. Likely to see several more of these types of signings by he Cubs. It’s going to be a repeat like the recent off seasons. It’s not like the Cubs were ever going to sign George Springer. Maybe Jed can find a couple of the classic “Diamonds in the Rough”.

I personally been saying good bye for the past 2 seasons. I doubt Jed will be successful in getting anything of value for Bryant and Schwarber unless one considers and mid range/teir prospect value. No way I see a top 2o prospect being dealt. But that’s the way it is. Other GM’s in the business know the Cubs are cornered for some well documented and discussed reasons and that’s not a good place to be.

KB is a given. Non tendering Schwarber is stupid. They have a ton of money with cheap owners. This has been the case for the last 3 winters.

The obsession with the Cubs by non-Cubs fans never ceases to amaze me. Every team picks up players like this, but the sheep can’t wait to type out “dumpster diving!” when the Cubs do it. No comment on the Pena signing from the peanut gallery?
I cannot imagine having the time to troll like some of these folks, as predictable as death and taxes. I hope you laugh at yourselves as much as we all laugh at youi…

Kind of amazing—-the post has been up for over two hours now and not a single troll from the Giants fans about the A’s dumpster diving for a minor league catcher. Like I said yesterday, the Sox will win the World Series and their fans will miss it because the Cubs will keenly time the announcement of a new community affairs person.

the Cubs have been more successful then the average team for half a decade now but people still think they are doing it wrong. said people need to take a look in the mirror and question if their team is any better.

To be fair I was joking when I said it. I have no problems with the cubs whatsoever

Hermosillo is a guy that can fill out their AAA outfield who has major league experience. Jason Heyward was dumpster diving.
