well, “redone” is a bit extreme; they ain’t gonna sell off everything and start all over from scratch. They’ve invested heavy in FA deals with Harper/Wheeler, and they have a semi-decent controllable core of Hoskins, Nola, and Bohm. It’s unfortunate that they need to continue adding free agents in order to improve because they A) fail at trades and B) fail at drafting. Phils are in a tough spot, as it seems like ownership won’t pay for big contracts this year. We will have to rely on some savvy, under-the-radar type moves. Don’t hold your breath. I can’t remember the last time “savvy” belonged in the same sentence with our Phillies.

…and the Phils’ front office is cutting back employees.

They were not a .500/competitive team WITH Harper, Segura, Nola, Hoskins, Gregorius, Kingery, Wheeler and Realmuto. Why?

          PITCHING, plain and simple.

They screwed themselves by losing so many games early and then trying to play 50 games in 53 days. They couldn’t even compete in 7 inning games!

Now you remove at least two very large pieces in Didi and JTR and what do you replace them with?

Velasquez has nasty, closer like stuff and I think would excel in a bullpen role. But as a starter, he kills your bullpen every start.

If the Phils don’t do a serious pitching overhaul, they need to look at how the Rays maximized their arms when they only had two dependable starters.

Phils couldn’t win scoring 6 runs a game, they aren’t winning more WITHOUT Realmuto and Didi unless they have 5 or 6 good, new pitchers they can count on.

Phils are gonna make VV a full time reliever. Yeah, I know, that’s been tried before. However, both times VV was sent to the pen injuries to a starter necessitated his return to the rotation. Given how lousy our bullpen was last year, VV most likely gonna start in the bullpen and stay there all year. Right now, Phils have Neris, VV and a couple of youngsters in the pen. Need about five or six more.

A rule of thumb for each gm in a regular season is 95% of the teams will win 60 games and loose 60 games so they now have to figure out, how to get 42 wins out there roster. Now that being said waive the the start up money to add an expansion teams in Nashville and Montreal. Let those groups start signing players. Think it will be the perfect time to add them, salaries will be probably the lowest in years. Plus hopefully by May or June we could be back filling ballparks with the vaccine. Ok here comes all the haters comments

Stubby where did you come up with that rule of thumb? I have never heard that before.

Also, when would you propose expansion teams without stadiums or ownership groups lined up play in the league?

Maybe they should wait until they survive the end of the pandemic before considering expansion. Expansion works when your business has been well prepared for eventualities, this doesn’t seem like one MLB had been well prepared for.

His rule of thumb is just another way of recognizing that in a 162-game season the best teams rarely win many more than 100 games (which equates to around 60 losses) while the worst teams don’t often lose much more than 100 games (i.e, around 60 wins).

I get that Odd. I just didn’t know if it was actually a common breakdown for people to use.
I just sounds weird. Like if a teacher said “95% of students get 50/100 questions, so you just need to find a way to get as many of those other 50 correct”. Maybe it’s just a Yogi Berra style saying that just…is.

Hawk Harrelson the Sox announcer always used to reference your going to win. And loose 60 it’s what you do with the 40 up for grab ones

Then they’d blow lead in 9th give up a walk off and after min or 2 of silence well Stone Poney ( Steve Stone who does color) this one those 42 games i talk about and we can mark this one in the L column

They will rely on very advanced system of statistical probability and shifting. The coaches will position them such that they only need to hold their glove in a specific area and they will catch the ball.

Are coaches allowed to go onto the field and move the guys like mannequins before the pitch is thrown?

Decent lineup? If that team doesn’t end up dead last in the league, I don’t know what is wrong with some teams not even trying.

That lineup would have to pray for a high strikeout pitcher because they won’t defend much. And not many lineups would have poorer hitting. Aside from that, you can hope for a jovial locker room full of misfits.

I was surprised by several of these moves, but am absolutely befuddled by the Twins decision to non-tender Wisler. He was elite last season, and was still very affordable. For a team that just lost Trevor May and who may lose several other key bullpen pieces from their 2020 roster, this move just makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

I really don’t understand Archie Bradley, either.. He would have gotten $6-7 million in arbitration, no? Seems like a very reasonable deal for a solid reliever, especially when the Reds just traded two prospects and cash for him. So in the end, it’s two prospects and cash for 7 innings of Bradley. Head-scratcher to say the least.

@Prospectnvstr: Because now he’ll leave and they’ll get nothing? His contract wasn’t a problem at $4+ million, but is at $6-7 million?

Again, they gave up prospects and *cash* for Bradley so they clearly valued him to some degree. To cut him loose after only 7 solid innings for the club strikes me as odd.

I’m glad someone mentioned Chasen Shreve. He really pitched well for the Mets and couldn’t be that expensive. I can only imagine that there may have been some communication between the two sides and the non-tender was given so he might get more of a full time gig elsewhere?

I fully expect the Mets to bring him back if he doesn’t get the opportunity he hopes for.

If Rangers do not get Kim, which would be a mistake, I can live with Franco at 3b until Jung is ready. In LF if you cannot trade for GUrriel you sign Scwarber or Renfroe as LF and Almora or Dahl as 4th OF. A. Bradley should definitely be added to the pen and you sign Urena and Rondon to minor league deals with spring invite for depth.

Dahl and Roman Quinn must use the same personal trainer. Neither one can go a dozen games or more without something tweaking them.

Too much for Dahl, due to injury history. Scwarber, Duvall, Rosario are all better choices. The optimum choice here is a trade for Gurriel, Andujar, or Dom Smith unless they trust Ozuna out there. I would even take Renfroe over Dahl

Yeah, the million bucks part I can see teams finding attractive.
I watched him for about 3 1/2 years with the Yanks. He had one really nice stretch. Some almost average stretches and some truly abysmal periods.

He was crushed when he got traded for Voit, man.

He just doesn’t have anything that’s overpowering. Well…he didn’t then, anyway. He was still tinkering with his pitch mix in NY. He’s left handed so he’ll probably keep getting shots.

To me he’s similar to Holder whom the Yanks just non-tendered. Guys who are just not quite average big league relievers. Now…watch them both go somewhere & become All Star closers like Kirby Yates lol.

Can some wise one tell me if this is weird compared to years past? It just seems bananas that the reds would let go of two reasonably priced 2020 top performers in Bradley and Casali. Is this a sign of how bad the free agent market will be?

I think so, unfortunately. In years past, players like Bradley and Casali would at least be tendered contracts, and then used as trade bait. The fact that they, along with players like Kyle Schwarber and David Dahl, are being non-tendered is indicative of how rough this year’s free agent market figures to be.

It’s definitely weird to see Drew Smyly get an $11 million guarantee and Mike Minor get an $18 million guarantee when above average regulars are being casually non-tendered.

About the same total number of players non-tendered this year as last, I think, but 50+ is on the high side historically. It’s hard to say if this year was high because of the specific 2020 circumstances, or if this is just in line with the trend of recent years. Probably a bit of both.

I wish MLBTR would do a comparison in non-tenders from 2009 after the 2008 collapse. I remember a couple of surprising non-tenders just to save money.

For example, my Astros non-tendered Ty Willingham (I think that was his name.) He’d just put up a 30 homer season and had carried the team in the second half and was projected to make like 5.5M. In a need to cut salary, he was non-tendered. In retrospect, he didn’t have much a career after that, but, at the time, it was surprising to Astros fans to see the hottest bat get cut for nothing.

I know the story and oddly, it makes sense on why they didn’t let the voter fix his mistake. It sets a dangerous precedent to allow those that “make a mistake” to go back and fix it. The ballot is final when cast and that should always be the end of it. From the story told from the person who cast the ballot, he was thankful that it didn’t end up influencing the winner, as it didn’t. But again, a ballot should never be able to be “fixed” if the person who cast it feels differently when the vote comes out. Even if the player that got the vote doesn’t deserve it. If you allow one, you might have to start allowing others. Not a good idea.

I’m shocked Boston didn’t non-tender Matt Barnes. He’s going to get $4M+ in arbitration and he’s just not worth that much. Would much rather see someone like Archie Bradley in the pen vs. Barnes, but the Sox love advanced stats and Barnes K-rate and spin rate must be enough for them to take the gamble here.

    Reply
    • FenwayFaithfulDevilsFan

I think there’s still a level of consistency that has plagued Barnes. If they can work past that, he has all the talent and pieces to be an elite reliever where $4 million is a bargain. I think that’s the way the Sox think as well.

Keep in mind also, Cora was likely consulted and in 2018 under Cora’s management team, Barnes posted a 2.71 ERA with 96K in 61 innings in 2018. His FIP and xFIP support the work he put in and felt 2019 should have been a similar year. Projections for 2021 remain strong on Fangraphs as well. Expecting much closer to 2018-2019 then 2020. However, 100% agree that he always makes me nervous on the mound. He’s got a trend of blowing some pretty big moments and the pressure of closing might not be for him.

If they would stop trying to make Barnes a Closer that would probably go a long way to fixing his inconsistencies. He is not a good fit in the 9th inning and he never looks comfortable in save situations.

The Sox need a real Closer, not this bullpen by committee nonsense they have used since Kimbrel left

Dahl would be a great pickup by the Red Sox. Lots of upside and energy while being inexpensive. The Sox don’t really know who they are in 2021 yet, and Dahl’s price tag would not be problematic no matter who they are. Also, they could shop him at the deadline if they get off to a rough start in 2021.

While Verdugo would probably deliver the best results, it’s hard to move him out of the huge RF at Fenway. So it would probably be some sort of combination of the 3. Verdugo might play CF on the road while Dahl/Benni rotate at Fenway. It sure seems like Boston is hoping that Duran has a hot Spring and gets promoted up to Boston sooner than later. I’m guessing Boston will try to bring Kevin Pillar back on a one year deal to man CF while Duran gets some more seasoning down in the minors. That is of course unless the Puig to Boston rumors are true. If that is the case, Puig takes over RF and Verdugo moves to CF.

This truly is a rare opportunity to remake this bullpen for the next few years. If the Phils don’t splurge on the top-tier guy in Hendriks, they can and should add 3 arms from the HUGE list. I want Bradley, Kela, and Hand. This is more than do-able for this team, and it would go a long way to improving that dreadful bullpen. I’d love them to bring along Taijuan Walker and Trevor Williams for starting pitching options as well. I don’t think that’s asking for too much.

Only $4 million more than they paid him last year, and if he rejected it, at least we’d get an extra draft pick. Whatever, supposedly the Angels are prepared to make Didi a nice multi-year offer. They already have Devers at 3B and Dalbec at 1B. Shaw is terrible at 2B and if the sox were going to go that route they would just let Chavis play 2B

Chavis wasn’t great last year either. I like Shaw because he’s a scrappy player. He had some good years with us and a couple good years with the Brewers. If he’s cheap and brings back his 2018 OBP numbers, it would be a great pick up.

Schwarber to A’s? Seems like it could be a fit if A’s can afford him. They usually like cheap all or nothing hitters on their roster.

Could make a nice expansion team or two with that.

Thoughts on Maikel Franco in a Brewers uniform?

Franco is better than most give him credit for being. Still under 30, the guy has pop and, for a guy with pop, he doesn’t strike out a lot. Just needs to be more selective at the plate and recite this mantra: “All contact is not necessarily good contact.”.

MLBTR should infuse the top of this list into an amended FA list

Honestly nobody on this list should shock anyone especially in COVID 2020. Schwarber the biggest name on the list was scheduled to make $7.5-10M. For a bad defender that averaged just above 1.0 bWAR the last 5 some years that’s a no brainer non-tender IMO.

Bradley kind of surprised me. Schwarber is just a name since he really hasn’t been a good player. A lefty Chris Carter. Don’t know how good/bad Rodon has been, but just noticed him on there too.

The Cubs are in big trouble. Why keep Bryant for twice the money it would take to keep Schwarber? Starting pitching better hold up because the other areas are full of wholes. Rizzo and Baez are the only safe bet, and both of them spent last season with BAs hovering in the low .200s.

I like Kenyan Middleton as a reclamation project. If he can ever stay healthy, his stuff is nasty.

Schwarber has been a fantasy of Yankee fandom for quite awhile but he is more of what they already have! All or nothing no contact avg to poor defense.
So the Yanks also are looking to cut salary somehow. It’s not happening especially when they need to resign DJ and are stuck with Stanton contract.
Only see two options to lower payroll and open up a spot for another all or nothing bat.
Deal Hicks and Voit. Resign Gardner to play CF. Play Schwarber at first and some left field with Frazier. Now they have a more left handed lineup. They also free up some salary in Hicks and Voit. Not sure they are better overall but they now have some money to play with.

I would have loved to see the Yanks say no to the Marlins about getting Stanton just to see what the Marlins and Stanton would have done next.

That would absolutely make the Yankees worse.

Gardner is 37. He can still back up CF, but should no longer start there. He’s your emergency option, not your primary option. He’s a 4th OFer at this stage and that’s probably the role he’ll serve for them in ‘21. Hicks is a high OBP switch-hitting CFer, so removing him removes a lefty bat. Voit is the AL HR champ who has a 143 OPS+ since becoming a regular in 2018. Hicks’ and Voit’s combined salary in 2021 will be around $13-14M. A bargain. You don’t trade two starting players for the “honor” of adding Kyle Schwarber, who was just cut by his MLB team.

The Yankees the team (who cares what some fans want?) had an interest in Schwarber several years back prior to adding Stanton at DH and Voit at 1B. And no way would the Yankees consider Schwarber for their wide LF. Add it up and there’s no room at the Bronx inn for Kyle in 2021. Wouldn’t shock me if the Yankees kicked the tires on a low-cost deal, but he’ll wisely go where he’ll be guaranteed playing time and more money. Still a chance he returns to the Cubs.

As for the Yankees cutting payroll, we can listen to their words or judge them by their actions. They picked up Britton’s expensive club option this offseason and tendered Sanchez. That’s $18M right there. Doesn’t seem like the moves of a team looking to penny pinch.

To unload Hicks at this time they would probably need to eat some of his contract.

Some of these non-tenders make it appear as if baseball execs are fearing another limited capacity attendance situation in 2021.

If spring training is cut short or teams have to close facilities, teams may not want to guarantee big money deals for guys who need more time to get ready or coming off horrible seasons.

They should. While wide availability of a vaccine is expected in 2021, that may not begin until April, with June expected for full availability. Add in general caution by governments allowing large gatherings immediately, and fans being reticent to being packed in at parks, plus the lingering economic impact, means teams may still only be operating at 35-50% capacity.

We’ll have increasing attendance as the season progresses and packed ballparks for the postseason, but I wouldn’t expect things to return to mostly normal until 2022, and that assumes no strike/lockout and a new CBA. Teams incurred debt in 2020 and will have lower revenue in 2021. That will impact teams for a number of years.
