Rangers Hire Chris Young As General Manager

By Connor Byrne | December 4, 2020 at 3:14pm CDT

The Rangers have hired Chris Young as their new general manager, Ken Rosenthal and Levi Weaver of The Athletic report. Jon Daniels will stay on as the team’s president of baseball operations.

This is out-of-nowhere news, as there was no indication Daniels would step aside as the Rangers’ GM this offseason. It’s a role Daniels has held since 2005. While Daniels is now 43, he became the youngest GM in league history when he got the job at the age of 28. The Rangers have since earned five playoff berths and won two American League pennants, though they have fallen on hard times in recent years. The team hasn’t finished above .500 since 2016, and it will reduce payroll heading into 2021, making an immediate return to contention even more difficult.

The Rangers are hoping the addition of Young to their front office will make it easier to return to relevance sometime soon. The 41-year-old is a former major league right-hander and a Princeton alumnus who began his career with the Rangers from 2004-05 before Daniels traded him to the Padres. Since he hung up his spikes in 2017, Young has been working in the MLB office, first as the league’s vice president of on-field operations, initiatives and strategy. He took on an even bigger role this year after chief baseball officer Joe Torre moved into an advisory position.

Young recently interviewed for the Mets’ GM job, but he dropped out of the running because he did not want to relocate his family. The Dallas resident will now get an opportunity to help lead a local franchise.

What happened to Jon Daniels? Did he get fired? I do admit that the Rangers needed a new general manager. Chris Young is definitely a good candidate to occupy that position. He’s a smart guy.

Plenty of jobs…that you steal from other states. I’m not buying anything made in Usa considering the geniuses who work in manufacturing in this country.

Btw, freedom, like 200 countries have it, not to mention the US has the highest rate of incarceration in the world.

Anyone who posits a counter argument to what you’ve said, ask them, why they are fleeing their own states to the south in record numbers then?

Extremely high property taxes in Texas and they keep going up as the value of your house goes up each year. I was blown away. In California I pay 1% of the $800,000 value of the house when I built it in 1987 here in Laguna Beach. The value for property taxes has not gone up and won’t unless I sell the house even though the house is worth over $3 million now. In Texas property tax is a minimum of 3.82% and in some areas its as high as 5%. On a $800,000 house that is $30,560 to $40,000 per year. I pay more than twice as much in property taxes on the $425k place I bought last year in Arlington a few miles north of Globe Life Park than my place in Laguna Beach.

I pay 7.75% sales tax in Laguna Beach and 8.25% sales tax in Arlington.

The government is going to get their money one way or another. The tax burden between California and Texas is not that big if you are making 6 figures or more.

The population of NYC grew from 8.24 million in 2010 to 8.55 million in 2020. NYC and the Buroughs grew an average of 4% over that time period. So its still growing. No mass flight out of NYC or its metro.

          data.cityofnewyork.us/City-Government/2020-populat…

Its places like Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Albany and other areas upstate that are losing population. Mostly because the manufacturing jobs are moving out. Even with those upstate areas losing jobs and population, the population of the state grew 300k.

This year the state of New York as a whole lost .26% population with all of that coming from upstate. NYC Still grew.

Over a 10-year span in one of the biggest and greatest cities, that is not very good over 10 years. Nothing worth touting.

Even Before Covid 2,600 People a Week Were Leaving New York City
By Alexandre Tanzi and Wei Lu
          December 5, 2020, 6:00 AM EST

From Bloomberg earlier today. They refer to it as net domestic migration. So I am not sure if that includes incoming foreigners. Which could be either bad or good, depending on where they are coming from.

It’s even worse for net income migration, where NYC and Chicago are both suffering. One of the things to remember is that NYC was largely a slum up through 1992. 20 years of Guiliani and Bloomberg saved and made it the most important city in the world. But it only took a few years for DeBlasio to re-start the decline.

Not exactly an exodus as he was claiming. NYC grew which is the opposite of “the mass flight he claimed and the state only declined .26% which is also far from “mass flight”.

This is flat wrong. The minimum property tax rate in Texas is not 3.82% and it’s very unlikely to find an established neighborhood with rates this high. New master planned developments typically have rates approaching 3.65% but those are usually reduced within a 20 year time frame. We own multiple properties throughout the state and each one has a different tax rate with none exceeding 2.5%. Tax rates vary by county and school district, and your bill is based on the appraised value of the property less any exemptions. You mention you have a place a few miles north of Globe Life…which I assume is Tarrant County with a tax rate averaging the 2.2% so you shouldn’t be paying more than $9,500/year on that $425k SF home. Also voters can file a petition to vote and roll back an increase if a taxing unit raises more than 8% of the property tax revenue for the previous year.

California also implements a state income tax so there is a difference in tax burden. A single person in California pays 9.3% (figure increases when making over $295k) of every dollar made over $57,825 unless they are a tax master or have a great accountant.

It pushes JD out of the position where he makes all the moves (…losing). Losing creates a bad culture, and JD is part of the reason why we’re losing. Get Young in there to make some different moves, and maybe it will result in a winning culture. I know JD is still in charge of the operations, but he has less on a hold on the actual transactions.

Looking at it that way, maybe this is still a really good move despite JD still having the power. JD used to have partners like Preller and Levine who helped him a lot in their time. You know… this might be a really good move. Maybe JD just needs a partner.

FINALLY! JD was washed up, at best. To give you an idea, the most valuable Rangers draftees to actually suit up for the team since 2010, are Joey Gallo, Alex Claudio, and Isiah Kiner-Falefa. A good player, a lefty reliever, and a premium defender with questionable hitting ability. That is just awful. Someone new was needed and this rudderless franchise suddenly feels like it has a direction again. Still gonna be a while before the Rangers are good again, but at least they might actually be good again with a new GM, because it wasn’t happening with Daniels.

Outside of an occasional Joey Gallo hot streak or two the Rangers haven’t had an impact first round draft pick produce much of anything since ‘01 when they landed Teixeira. The draft and development department for the Rangers has been the single biggest letdown for this organization and is the reason why they have struggled so mightily the last five years plus years.

Does he actually have any say over player personnel or is Daniels still running the show and the GM title is just ceremonial to keep him away from other teams?

The Mets are probably TOO close to contending for Young’s liking.

Maybe it really is about being able to scorch the earth and start over, which he can easily do with Texas (Lynn and Gallo especially will fetch quality returns).

Young just didn’t want to move his three kids to New York out of the clear blue, he wanted to stay local.

Yes its true Young wanted to stay local but I think he had discussions with JD about the potential of taking the GM job since he was being looked at the same position with NYM. I hope the NYM get a great GM and y’all can get NYC to shut up about the NYY, but it sounds like Young preferred to stay with an org he already worked with.

I’ve read much of Mets fans and it’s entirely normal for fans to get excited about their team when something good happens to them. There have been some crazies out there but nothing unusual. What’s ALSO very normal is for the fans of the OTHER 29 teams to lash out at the team with the newly excited fans.

Happened with Padres fans this season, happened with the Braves when they emerged from their rebuild and it happened with the Phillies when Middleton said they were about to spend stupid money.

He would need to rent in NYC. A first-time GM with presumably a new POBO in 1 year when Alderson retires and a very public owner who is willing to spend the cash (or at least says he is). When they don’t start winning quickly, they’re going to need a fall guy – and a first-time GM without the fans backing him looks like the favorite.

Jon Daniels is from Queens, and I’m sure he’d stick with TEX because he’s been there 16 years — how many rebuilds? You won’t get very far with his record in NYC. Sure, his kids…who still won’t be able to see him because he’s working 90-hour weeks trying to not blow the #2 overall pick. But sure, his kids…not job security.

The Mets don’t have a bright future they have a bright PRESENT because they have the best bullpen and lineup and pitcher in the National League, which is why they powered to a last place finish.

Like I said in the article about him turning down the Mets… the Mets are still a dumpster fire!

He turned down the new billionaire Mets and their reloading for the Hometown rangers and a total renuild… love it. All Cohen’s money dont matter. Front office people turn him down. All the big name FA will turn him down. Same old NY Mets dumpster Fire… just new owner and more money

People won’t get on their knees and beg to Cohen and the Mets to take them in if they have 3 young kids in the DFW and don’t want to un-root them all just to move to NY.

Perhaps Daniels just wants to have someone else to take the blame when the oncoming payroll reduction causes many more years of irrelevance. He can always fire Young and re-hire himself down the road.

Such a historically bad trade losing him and Adrian Gonzalez for a bad season of Adam Eaton. Surprised Daniels survived that one long enough to succeed 5 years later.

Organizations with a President of Baseball Operations(PoBO) means the GM is basically what an Assistant GM is in organizations without a PoBO. How much control Young has remains to be seen. Daniels is still in charge today just as he was yesterday. Rangers fans who don’t like Young can only hope that Young brings in a new perspective that Daniels will listen to. If not, nothing has changed.

Now that they have a proper GM, I’m sure teams will be banging down the door with Lance Lynn offers. Young could make a nice first impression by shaking down a team for a good return on LL.

I had the opportunity to meet and have deep conversations with Chris Young multiple times during when he was rehabbing with the Nationals in 2013. He is a very smart guy and a very nice genuine person. I’m glad he is getting this opportunity. Best of luck to him!
