Tigers Designate Troy Stokes Jr.

By Connor Byrne | January 5, 2021 at 6:51pm CDT

The Tigers have designated outfielder Troy Stokes Jr. for assignment, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports. The move creates 40-man roster space for outfielder Robbie Grossman, whom the Tigers signed Tuesday.

Stokes was a 2014 fourth-round pick of the Brewers who stuck with the organization until it lost him on waivers to the Tigers in September 2019. He ended his career in the Brewers’ minor league system as a .250/.351/.411 hitter with 57 home runs and 129 stolen bases over 2,355 plate appearances. Stokes made his Triple-A debut in 2019 and batted .233/.341/.385 with nine homers and 14 steals in 381 PA. He still has two minor league options remaining.

Should have kept him over Grossman. He has more upside.

Troy Stokes is not MLB caliber but, I get your drift. Robbie Grossman will not take the Tigers to the post season but may block their OFs development.

if they had 3 OF they felt could play everyday then they wouldn’t have signed Grossman. veterans like this can do a lot for young players too

Trying to go 52-110 instead of 42-120.

It’s not about the record for Detroit right now. It’s about development. Which, still, I don’t love the Grossman move, but I understand the logic. Tigers OB% was abysmal. I would still rather they throw Riley Greene out there, but I get waiting another year. You’ll want him to click with the rest of a competitive team.

Yaa, those numbers don’t ever translate to any kind of sustained major league success

Idk if they faced competition for him but he should give a big thanks to his agent for landing that kind of salary. Probably plays everyday for DET.

See the things about rebuilds is..in order for the rebuild to be successful, you have to get better.
Grossman is an upgrade, in layman’s terms.

Or, would you prefer DET be stuck in neutral, & not support the competitiveness of the sport?

I disagree that he’s an upgrade. Soem of the Tigers OFs gave indication they were breaking out.

IMO Besides Victor, it seemed as if everyone regressed. It was a perfect time for some to step up, and no one could get the job done.

Goes to show: Al is NOT doing a good job, wastes resources.

A LOT OF MONEY AND EFFORT WENT INTO STOKES JR!
      WHAT FOR? End result= NADA.

No trade, no play…. What a waste of time, effort and money!

Proves to me Al needs a boss. Me.

Did you see what the OF did the last 3 years? They need average. This move makes complete sense. He’s cheap and DET just improved.

Simply he’s better than crap we’ve been seeing out there, he doesn’t block anyone, worst case they make him 4th outfielder next year

      Its the same M.O.
      Built around one player
      Worthless scouting
      Wasted draft choices
      Poor acquisitions

I don’t understand why anyone should have a problem with the Tigers getting rid of him for Grossman.

Stokes does have some upside, and for a young team, there’s something to be said for that. But an almost 25 year old outfielder with a .726 OPS in AAA and strikeout issues hardly seems like someone worth keeping around when a solid major leaguer is available.

But they didn’t replace him with a solid major league player. They replaced him with Grossman.

So many players to choose from to release… Daz Cameron has shown nothing at all… Christin Stewart has been garbage… derek hill… wowsers. And who could Grossman possibly block? Good lord, they have had to run niko goodrum and harold castro out there. There is no one near ready to play.

Tanking for the next 3 years.

Cameron and Hill are great defenders. Hill actually was hitting and made the team until he hurt his knee diving. The Tigers didn’t give him any ABs afterward… and there’s hope. Grossman is mediocre and will never breakout.

Plain and simple, Grossman takes quality at bats. He’s a pro and that’s needed on young teams. Happy to see him back in the central

I would not mind if the Orioles would sign Stokes for AAA or AA depth. Never can have too much depth.

The article states, Stokes had options remaining. He could still be a Tiger. Otherwise, (IMO) they would’ve moved from Sergio Alcantara.
