Yankees, Socrates Brito Agree To Minor League Deal

By Steve Adams | January 1, 2021 at 11:07am CDT

The Yankees have agreed to a minor league contract with outfielder Socrates Brito, tweets MLB Network’s Jon Heyman. The MAS+ client will be invited to Major League Spring Training.

Brito, 28, signed a minor league deal with the Pirates last year and opened the shortened season in Pittsburgh’s 60-man player pool at their alternate training site in Altoona. However, Brito opted out of the remainder of the year in September following the tragic loss of his brother to Covid-19.

He’ll now join a Yankees club that has seen plenty of outfield injuries over the past couple of seasons, which could afford him another opportunity in the big leagues. Brito has spent parts of four seasons in the Majors between Arizona and Toronto, but he’s yet to replicate the solid production he posted in his first cup of coffee when he batted .303/.324/.455 in 18 games with the 2015 D-backs. Brito carries just a .525 OPS in 218 Major League plate appearances, but he’s notched a much more impressive .297/.345/.491 batting line in 1541 plate appearances at the Triple-A level.

I know cashman often digs up hidden gems, but come on really , these are the Yankees . Stop crying poor because maybe they lost money on the Yankee season , but I bet they made money on the yes network , shirts, memorabilia etc . They should stop this nickel and dime crap and act like the Yankees that George would be proud of

Most “fans” on here can not name the 40 man roster players from 26 to 40, so no depth never enters their minds…

You’re definitely giving Metsfan22 a run for his money. Every team has a local TV contract and all MLB-licensed merchandising gets split into a revenue-sharing pool. It’s a poor argument. Are you not satisfied with Voit and Urshela? During the King George days, we didn’t have a luxury tax or an international signings money cap. What worked for the Yankees then won’t work now.

Now that that’s outta the way…hey, I didn’t know much about Voit or Urshella at one time either. So…maybe there’s something here? These depth signings are swell & all.

But wouldn’t mind seeing the Yanks make an actual move of some type.

Maybe they’re trying to stock the minors with guys who will look good in trades if they have good springs and if the minors can come back this year, so they can get pitchers or something without giving up their A-list starters or prospects and then drop quadruple-A or other reclamation players from the 40-man roster and slot in proven guys for virtually nothing.

Definitely hoping to turn these guys into another Luke Voit or Gio Urshela or Aaron Small.

You never know but, I guess, we kind of do know! At the very least Brito could be good minor league depth in the OF. And with all the Yankee injuries these past few seasons, Brito may see the light of day in the Bronx. Or be just as likely to be DFA’d in the next week or 2.
