Tigers To Re-Sign Jonathan Schoop

By Connor Byrne | February 5, 2021 at 4:22pm CDT

The Tigers are re-signing second baseman Jonathan Schoop to a one-year, $4.5MM contract, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports. Schoop is a client of VC Sports Group.

A member of the Orioles, Brewers and Twins earlier in his career, Schoop signed a $6.1MM deal with the Tigers heading into last season. At his best, Schoop slashed .293/.338/.503 with 32 home runs in 675 plate appearances as an Oriole in 2017. Schoop has never been that effective in any other season, but he did do a nice job last year as a member of the Tigers, with whom he batted .278/.324/.475 with eight homers over 177 trips to the plate. However, the 29-year-old did have a difficult season by Statcast’s standards, ranking way below average in most important categories, including exit velocity, hard-hit rate and expected weighted on-base average.

The Tigers, though, aren’t necessarily pushing for a star at the keystone right now. For the most part, as a rebuilding team that doesn’t figure to fight for a playoff spot in the near future, Detroit wants veteran Band-Aids to fit positions not occupied by younger players. Keeping the 29-year-old Schoop seems to make sense for the Tigers, then, considering they’re only guaranteeing him one more season on their roster. Meanwhile, free agency has lost yet another capable starter at second.

His offensive value is good due to his ability to play 2nd. A .740ish ops is pretty mediocre for a corner. If he is moved to third he becomes replacement level.

Not saying he’d be great at third, but just to be fair his OPS has been above .750 (usually well above) in six of his eight seasons, including a .799 last year.

I hope the Braves sign a 3rd baseman soon so they’ll stop commenting on every thread that contains a player that might be 3B eligible.

Brewers already tried using him as a SS and that didn’t work out at all. Brewers should sign Maikel Franco instead of trying to play players out of position

He is not a third baseman except in an emergency case only. I don’t get fathead’s need to fit a square peg in a round hole. I would rather have an experienced third baseman.

Wouldn’t be a bad plan, if Paredes can cut it (plus there is some cushion now).

I don’t think Paredes is ready. My guess they sign a free agent first basemen and put Candy back at third where he is much better.

I dont believe the Tigers need to put Dillon Dingler on the 40 Man yet, but he’s their catcher of the future. First player taken in the second round I believe. Mayne a fast mover..college catcher. He can hit and has all-star potential. I don’t see anything really effecting the team all that greatly yet. I do like the Grossman signing. I think next offseason they are much more active.

Not happy with this move. Schoop had a fine season last year, but this moves Candy back to 1B. Parades at 3B. Candy has limited control and would have more trade value as a third baseman. The Tigers need power, and Cron was a better fit. The Tigers have little middle infield depth in the upper minors. Moving Parades to 2B now would have made sense.

Not necessarily. Candy probably splits time at 1st and 3rd, also with Niko playing some 1st. Parades might not start in the majors either. He could very well start at AAA to begin the season. He could then get reps there and at 3rd before coming up later in the year if he proves his worth. Cron coming off an injury and could yet get signed, though suspect it would be to a MiLB deal with a spring invite.

Now the Tigers will have another roster move to make……….wonder whom gets the boot?

Paredes won’t make the team. He needs more seasoning. Candy will move back to third, Tigers will sign a low cost short term first baseman.

Christan Stewart is no good; Al Avila will give him an extension and he will play 150 games and block more deserving players.

Grayson Greiner’s offense is comparable to Bill Bergen, the worst hitter all time during the deepest part of the dead ball era. However, Greiner’s defense is not comparable to Bergen, the best defensive catcher all-time.

Don’t get me wrong, liked what Schoop brought to the team last year. But would have preferred signing a 1B, allowing Willi Castro Niko Goodrum play middle IF with Candelario playing third. Now Candy and Niko will have to take some reps at 1B. Of course, there is still a chance we sign a 1B and Candy plays 3B with Parades in AAA working on some things.

      C Ramos
      1B Candy

      SS W Castro
      3B Paredes
      LF Grossman
      CF Jones
      RF Victor Reyes
      DH Miggy

This is not must-see TV but it is watchable. I’ll take that.

Int would if they would be more creative like paying singing bonuses to reduce the annual contact payments.
          Player wants $14M
Offer $4M singing bonus, $9-10M for the year or a reduced rate for multiple years.
Contenders with their backs against the luxury tax or just cheap budget minded teams will appreciate the savings……

No. The Dodgers get nothing. They didn’t want to give away a prospect to get Verlander and win a championship and i’m glad the Astros rammed that down their throat.

The Dodgers are not giving anything of value up for taking Price.

That is not how they roll.
