Cubs Claim Sergio Alcantara

By Steve Adams | February 5, 2021 at 4:10pm CDT

The Cubs have claimed infielder Sergio Alcantara off waivers from the Tigers, per announcements from both clubs. Detroit designated him for assignment last week to make roster space for Wilson Ramos. Chicago’s 40-man roster is up to 38 players.

Alcantara, 24, made his big league debut with the Tigers last season and had three hits, including a homer, in 23 trips to the plate. The long ball was a bit surprising, as Alcantara has shown virtually no power in seven minor league seasons (nine home runs in 2611 plate appearances).

Lack of pop notwithstanding, Alcantara is regarded as a slick-fielding option at shortstop and can handle second and third base as well. He’s yet to play in Triple-A, thanks to the lack of a minor league season in 2020, but is a .261/.340/.317 hitter in parts of two Double-A campaigns. Alcantara is out of minor league options, so he’ll need to either break camp on the Cubs’ Opening Day roster as a defensive-minded utility piece, or else again be exposed to waivers (or traded).

Was hoping he would pass thru waivers and stay with Detroit.

I bet the Cubs will try to pass him thru waivers and outright him.

And if payroll is based solely on attendance then why should payroll be affected by outside business overruns, etc?

      WHY?

Why would a Tiger fan hope he stayed with Detroit? Did he leave you virtual tickets?

His fielding wasn’t really “slick.” That homer did travel a surprising distance, but I think he’s one of those 2-3 homer a year guys. Don’t expect much, and he was the “winner” among the Tigers “haul” for JD Martinez!

He won’t last long with the Cubs. My guess is he does not survive spring training and will be released before the season starts.

Reclamation project? I can’t really see him starting over Nico. Maybe the sporadic start for rests?

He will compete for a infield utility position in spring training. If he doesn’t win the job, he will be released.

Cubs in obvious rebuild. Take Bryse Wilson & Kyle Muller and give the Braves Kris Bryant already

My guess is they keep KB at this point. They probably couldn’t even get those two guys without chipping in a good chunk of cash.

Cubs may as well just take the qualifying offer pick at this point. Seems insane to give him away and chip in money. One last hurrah

Very difficult to get anything for Bryant at this point without paying a chunk of his salary. If he has good first half, it becomes easier to deal him.

Last time that happened was 1959. Sox lost. I was 9 years old and lost 75 cents betting on them.

Do you remember they sounded the air raid sirens when the Sox clinched the pennant in 1959?

That’s a really intriguing prediction, Chicagofan. It makes me want to visit Glendale to watch both squads who share the spring trading facility.
