Carlos Carrasco Suffers Torn Hamstring

By Steve Adams | March 18, 2021 at 6:12pm CDT

6:12pm: Carrasco suffered a tear, per DiComo. It’s a serious injury that could require at least a six- to eight-week absence, a source told Mike Puma of the New York Post.

1:39pm: Just hours after Mets skipper Luis Rojas gave a positive update on right-hander Carlos Carrasco’s sore elbow, Carrasco is now headed for an MRI to evaluate the extent of a right hamstring strain, MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo reports (via Twitter). Carrasco apparently sustained the new injury when doing conditioning work following this morning’s 20-pitch simulated inning.

Given the new injury, DiComo notes that it is “exceedingly difficult” to see Carrasco being ready to step into the Opening Day rotation. The aforementioned elbow discomfort had already shut him down for eight days, and while he’d been building up in side sessions prior to that, Carrasco still has yet to pitch in a Grapefruit League game.

Obviously, a timeline on the injury can’t be known, but it’s a nevertheless inauspicious start to the talented righty’s Mets tenure. Carrasco, 34, came to the Mets alongside Francisco Lindor in the blockbuster deal that sent a prospect package headlined by Andres Gimenez to Cleveland over the winter. He’s expected to factor prominently into a deep Mets rotation, joining Jacob deGrom, Marcus Stroman and Taijuan Walker among the top four projected members of the staff.

If Carrasco isn’t able to go come Opening Day, it seems likely we’ll see two members of what increasingly appears to be a three-horse rotation race make the club. David Peterson, Joey Lucchesi and Jordan Yamamoto have all been competing for the fifth starter’s job and all have thrown well.

Dam, this is not good to hear for Mets fans. I hope Cookie gets better. IMO I said their pitching X-factor was Cookie being healthy. Mets are lucky they got Luchessi and Jordan Yamamoto, they will be good for their depth.

Comparable, even if Hamels took the veteran’s minimum, Peterson is pre-arb and Lucchesi and Yamamoto have options.

DeGrom, Stroman, Walker, Peterson, Lucchesi, Yamamoto, should give Carrasco time to heal and Syndegaard willbe back sometime this year. Why sign Cole Hamels? Makes no sense. What, so he goes on the IL when Carrasco is ready? Or even before.? You think Hamels will stick around on a budget deal just to stick around.? Again, makes no sense. 29 other front offices cant be wrong.

also i wish carrasco a speedy recovery and finds the mound quickly, he may not pitch on my team but all he went though just to play bb again much less at the mlb level it’s hard not to root for him

Backhandbaptist: It’s a shame that people still feel this way, but it was prophesied and unfortunately there’s little to do when people are convicted that it’s a sham. I do wonder….when something goes wrong, seriously wrong, do they go into a quiet room and say, “Dear me…….”

KCJ: I agree with you brother, baseball chat is for baseball, but there are certain things that are more important…. this is that.

Plus, I look at it as contributing an alternative viewpoint, and one that could actually save a life, given the comments in the thread above. To attack him was a bit disingenuous, my friend.

He’s giving information in response if you look at context; not fair to hate on him based on that, whether you agree or not, and he said nothing offensive…..unless you’re going the wrong way – I could see where one could take offense to that.

Trade for Steven Brault/Chad Kuhl and Adam Frazier. The Pirates need to get Frazier out the door and it gives the Mets a guy who can play all 3 outfield positions and second base to a well above average level. They need to improve their defense and Frazier does that. Kuhl/Brault ovbisously helps them solve their issue if a pitcher gets hurt.

I don’t know who said this, but he is a very good pitcher and is your No. 2. Without your No. 2 that is somewhat bad. Stroman is decent, Walker can be good but he had a good 10 starts and has had lots of injuries. Your 5 starters are ?. It won’t decide it but he’s very important IMO

I wouldn’t listen to him. He thinks the Phillies have a better roster. I could understand braves but phillies “paper wise are clearly behind. Not saying they can’t finish ahead of the Mets.

Ik, Metsfan22 I hope you won’t be mad about what im going to say but, I do think the Mets are better on paper than the Nats. But I think the Mets and Nats will battle for it because Mets recent history has been bad and those were teams that were good on paper. The Nats 2019 run had some stars and meh players that played great. So thats why I think the Nats will compete, and yes i’m being somewhat biased. We can agree that the Phils bullpen will stink again.

Just Carrasco, from the rotation and Lugo from the pen. The other starters have looked healthy and pitched well. Not sure your comment has any validity. The bullpen has not looked as good, and the offense is definitely slow to start. But the rotation seems ok, and will be better when they get Carrasco and Thor back.

Yeah, none of deGrom, Wheeler, Alonso, McNeil, Syndergaard, Nimmo, Conforto, Lugo came through the system after being acquired or drafted. Rosario, Matz, Lugo…

Heaven forbid your team should add a free agent veteran or make a trade. Who is that again? The Red Sox? How did those Sale and Price deals work out? Hung on to Betts nicely, too. Nobody in your outfield came through your system. Half your bullpen is from other teams…

    How did this happen?

In the olden days we used to run laps (you betcha: it was up hill both ways & always in the snow) around the field when we were done throwing.

Wouldn’t they be using a bike or treadmill now? Ya know? I’m just struggling to see how that could lead to a torn hammy. I really am.

According to the write up, it happened after he threw. So he was all warmed up. It wasn’t a game setting. It’s pretty much the most low key part of his day.

I know Cal Ripken Jr would’ve just rubbed some snot on it – or whatever – & then gone 2-4, but something about this just seems really off to me.

I’ll tell you all something that’ll resonate with NY fans, these relatively “minor” injuries (hamstrings, rib pulls, certainly the dreaded lat strain or pulled calf) are becoming nearly synonymous with shoulder surgery in terms of IL stint time.
