Padres righty Dinelson Lamet pitched multiple innings for the first time this spring Thursday, tweets A.J. Cassavell of MLB.com, albeit in a simulated-game setting. Lamet, whose 2020 season was truncated by a biceps injury that required a platelet-rich plasma injection in October, has yet to pitch in an actual Cactus League game since Spring Training began. Lamet tossed 17 innings in the first half of that simulated setup, and he returned from his downtime to toss another dozen pitches in the second “inning,” Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune tweets.
A concrete timeline for Lamet hasn’t been provided to this point, but he’s obviously a bit behind the rest of the Padres’ starters. Assuming he needs some additional time to ramp up early in the season, the Friars can still lean on Chris Paddack and Adrian Morejon to round out the rotation behind Yu Darvish, Blake Snell and Joe Musgrove. The 28-year-old Lamet broke out with a huge showing in a dozen starts last year, logging a 2.09 ERA/3.16 SIERA with an elite 34.8 percent strikeout rate and a very strong 7.5 percent walk rate.
More on the Padres…
- Right-hander Pierce Johnson, who exited Tuesday’s Cactus League game early, has been diagnosed with a Grade 1 groin strain, tweets Acee. He’ll rest for a yet-to-be-determined period of time, though the club hopes that he can get in a couple more games by the end of camp, so it doesn’t sound like the current expectation is for him to miss any time during the regular season. Johnson, 29, returned to the Majors last season after a strong showing in Japan in 2019 and thrived in the San Diego bullpen. Through 20 innings of relief, the righty posted a 2.70 ERA with a gaudy 33.8 percent strikeout rate, though his 11.3 percent walk rate was also noticeably higher than the league average. He’s signed for $2MM in 2021, and at season’s end the Padres will decide on a $3MM club option or $1MM buyout.
- Austin Nola’s fractured finger looks to have opened the door for Luis Campusano to make the Opening Day club, writes Dennis Lin of The Athletic in his latest roster projection for the Friars. San Diego is also “reluctant” to give up on Jorge Mateo’s defensive versatility and speed, Lin notes, and the fact that the out-of-options Mateo is also hitting well thus far (.355/.462/.516 in 39 PAs) likely tickets him for a bench spot as well. The bullpen could have some tougher decisions as well, given the lack of minor league options for Dan Altavilla and Taylor Williams — both of whom have struggled to this point.
Hosmer for HOF
See Lamet’s solid and ready. He tossed 17 innings AND came back to toss a dozen more more balls!!
tonyinsingapore
Cy Young himself, he of 749 CGs, would be proud….

Lol I noticed that in the article also. Impressive lol

Freaking DL him to start the season Pads! Please. Have him ready for the last half of the season

Why I want a Porcello, Hamels or Samardjza signing. Stretch the rotation out.
Snell
Darvish
Musgrove
Porcello/Hamels/Samardjza
Morejon
Paddack/Weathers/Gore long relief
padreforlife
When has he ever been ready
VegasSDfan
Nobody has tossed 17 innings since Babe Ruth
oldmansteve
17 innings in the first half of a simulated game. Must have took all day to get through 34 innings.
SDHotDawg
I don’t care how many pitches or innings Lamet threw. I remain very skeptical regarding his health.
DarkSide830
what I’ve been wondering is what is SD’s backup plan if they lose another catcher. behind the three on the 40 theres…Wynston Sawyer and Webster Rivas?
amk1920
Francisco Mejia oh wait they traded him. How about Blake Hun..oh yeah he was traded too. Maybe Luis Torr.. oh never mind. Maybe those Padre fans who told us Preller trading all of their depth were wrong
Simodine
They have 3 capable cathers all better then the ones you mentioned. Their catcher depth is fine. Nola will be back and campy is an up and coming stud.
Try again next injury.
amk1920
Guess you don’t know what depth is. Nola is out. The post was what if another C goes down. They would be left with just Claritini or just Campy. I’m aware Nola is better than all 3 players listed. Try to understand the point next time.
Sideline Redwine
Lol sure–Nola has a whopping 400 or so at bats at the mlb level, has never played a full season, and has never been a full-time catcher at this level. He got hot last year, sure. But are you seriously holding yr breath on him being a rock back there? He’s 31 to boot–if he is all that, why is he just breaking in now? A lot of hopes resting on some tenuous stuff there…
dvmin98
Guess you don’t know how the waiver wire works. They have 2 capable catchers that will be ready for opening day, with Nola not far along. If something happens and someone else gets hurt, Either Caratini or Campusano would be the every day catcher, then either the new pick up or Webster Rivas would be the emergency catcher. What if What if What if? Big what if…
oldmansteve
Sideline Redwine – He’s just breaking in now because he had a swing change at 27 to increase his launch angle. Started hitting for a lot more power. He was also a utility infielder who moved to catcher to try and make the bigs (as it is harder to catch). Turns out he was a really good framer. I agree there are still question marks but using his late ascendence as a criticism is pretty ignorant.
oldmansteve
Most teams only keep 3 catchers maybe 4 on the 40 man anyway, so the Padres don’t have any less depth than most teams.
padreforlife
Waiver wire team supposed to be competing for division good planning
amk1920
A quality catcher on the waiver waller falling to San Diego spot? Padre fans are really showing how much they followed baseball before 2019.
p4dr35
Depth is generally what is on the roster. Three catchers is depth and they are three great options.
Plus Nola will be ready by opening day.
Deleted Userrr
If Nola is there on opening day it means they rushed him. Which isn’t a good thing. But it is par for the course with San Diego.
Brew’88
Nola is out for first two weeks of season, relax?
Padres2019ha
Can’t try to a follow a point that leads to nowhere. Padres are fine at catcher. Nola won’t be out long. Stop sweatin’ us
Deleted_User
Hey dude! Have the Padres traded Wil Myers for Noah Syndergaard yet???
Pads Fans
Nola is out 3-6 weeks. He will be back by the end of April at the latest. Caratini as the starter and Campusano as the backup is fine.
VegasSDfan
Campusano has more potential than Nola.
oldmansteve
I would expect Campusano to get more playing time than Caratini. It will probably be a 60/40 split though.
dvmin98
They traded Torrens to get Nola
Mejia can’t hit and can’t receive. Nice arm though
Hunt got us Snell.
I’d rather have those transactions than the players you mention.
padreforlife
Snell hasn’t pitched as a Padre calling scoreboard already
amk1920
Not the point. I was told by Padre fans that Preller’s moves didn’t harm the franchise because he kept Gore and Abrams. He traded everything but the top 4 prospects and it’s cute how your fanbase acts like moving 20 players in the past year will have no impact.
Brew’88
MLB.com came out today with rankings and have Padres farm ranked 6th best in baseball. 30 deep. I guess Preller didn’t give it all up as you say.
amk1920
That’s what having 2 of the top 10 does. Yall are a broken record.
Deleted_User
Padres still have a strong farm system. But in the past year it’s gone from being “elite” to “top heavy.” There’s really not much to be excited about after the top 8 or so.
Pads Fans
“San Diego literally dealt half of its 2020 Top 30 prospects over a few months from ‘20 into ‘21.
And despite that remarkable turnover, it remains one of the sport’s strongest farm systems — ranked sixth in baseball.”
Pads Fans
Ona, Mears, Thompson, Espinoza – who threw 96-98 today and looked great, Medina was kept at the alternate training site all 2020, even though he had not thrown a pitch as a pro. That says volumes.
Top 6 system is still elite in most books. Most fans would be ecstatic if their team had 2 prospects in the overall top 10.
VegasSDfan
It will have no negative impact moving 20 4A players. The players they received will have more positive impact.
padreforlife
Produce 1 homegrown position player
padreforlife
That’s all Padre fans know the prospects are great. Preller produce 1 homegrown prospect position player in 7 years? Preller is so overrated
SDHotDawg
Let me know when a “highly ranked farm system” wins a World Series.
Brew’88
No, the 6th best farm isn’t based on 2 guys. Get informed.
Hudson6
Who really cares if you grow them yourself or trade your your prospects for them? Either way your prospects turned your team into a possible World Series contender.
Deleted_User
@Hudson6 for one, every team that has won a WS lately has had a solid homegrown core with a few key additions sprinkled in here and there rather than a team built entirely on mercenaries. For two, if you keep making those 4 for 1 prospect for rental trades, at some point, you’re gonna run out of prospects. The Padres are already well on their way, as the farm system is now more top-heavy than elite.
LosPobres1904
Wil Myers
SDHotDawg
Myers isn’t a homegrown player.
Deleted_User
Neither is Tatis
tatiz
Preller will get one.
padreforlife
Preller has gotten mostly below average catchers in his 7 years as GM
Hudson6
Alejandro Kirk seems to be murdering the ball this spring. If he makes the Jays OD roster they will have to cut a quality backup.
Deleted_User
Or if Campy gets actual jail time
oldmansteve
There was an article stating that Campusano had “put it behind him” implying that the case was settled.
Deleted_User
Waiting for an official report. Not a one line quote from an article behind a paywall.
Pads Fans
The charges were lowered to a misdemeanor in January. Its all over now. In Georgia you can look up any court case proceedings, so you can find out the results for yourself.
Deleted_User
Link? If you can quote it, you can link it.
Deleted_User
I know you saw this. If the charges really were dropped to a misdemeanor you would have no reason not to drop a link to prove it.
VegasSDfan
Yes, the charges were reduced. Thats why you don’t rush to conclusion.
Deleted_User
@VegasSDFan the two of you keep saying that then going into hiding when asked to provide proof. Why is that?
Deleted_User
Yeah, don’t ignore the question Koamalu!
SDHotDawg
So what if the charges were reduced. He’s still a doper.
Deleted_User
The charges weren’t reduced otherwise he’d drop a link
Deleted_User
@Pads Fans in fact… you were saying the charges were reduced to a misdemeanor as early as last November but now you are saying they were reduced in January.
So which one is it…
Hudson6
Any guesses on how long it will take Lurking and Tatsumaki to get here and talk negatively about the Padres? Anyone?
Lurking
Amazing how obsessed you are with me. You are the ONLY person that insists on name dropping me for no reason on every single Padre article. Get a life
Notice how a bunch of other people have the same complaints I have mentioned about the Padres? It’s almost like they’re actual concerns
Brew’88
Hudson has em pegged.

Tattedmama is foaming at the mouth right now. Yeah, trash talk the Padres, love fest for everything Dodgers. That guys a ………..
Sideline Redwine
The Pads have a solid lineup–if Myers can play w some will (pardon the pun), and some solid depth. Rotation could be fine–but are there any sure things beyond Snell? Yu had a great year last year (only sixty games) and was coming back around in ’19; Musgrove has never been overly impressive, although being an ex-Pirate automatically makes him better. Morejon is young, Paddack has been up and down. When Clevinger returns the future looks brighter–but are they going to be as great as everyone promises? Meh, we’ll see. If they can win ninety games I will admit I was wrong, but honestly I wouldn’t count on that.
padreforlife
Clevinger is next year oh the strike year good luck
CNichols
I don’t really understand why people are freaking out about Nola maybe missing a few weeks, Caratini is solid and while Campusano needs more seasoning he should be passable for a few weeks.
The whole “what if more catchers get hurt?” hypothetical could be applied to any team. Like if the Mets lost McCann and Nido, or if the Dodgers lost Smith and Barnes, or the Astros lost Maldonado and Castro, etc.. etc… then all of those teams would be grabbing random guys that aren’t on their 40 to be the backup or making a trade. Thats just what has to happen when you have 3 catchers on the 40 man and 2 are hurt. Catching depth is so scarce no one has 4 MLB quality catchers.
padreforlife
1 homer last year is solid lol
The Big Yo
Is it just me or do the Padres have too many players?
SDHotDawg
Padres catching is not a problem. However, the “reluctance” to give up on Mateo because of his so-called “defensive versatility” tells me that some writer is hawking the Preller company line. Just throwing a guy into a new position doesn’t make him “versatile” if he can’t play it well. Mateo is a one-tool player until proven otherwise.
Deleted_User
Still not as long as it took for them to give up on Jose Pirela
SDHotDawg
We don’t know, yet. Preller falls in love with some guys. Usually just because they have a “tool” and “potential.” It took him forever to dump Pirela and his one so-so tool.
2021 great year to be a Padres fan
I had to sign up, because this is a good outlet for us baseball fans. For Me personally, baseball is a connection i share with My father, Even My name, “Iván de Jesús” was given to me because My dad liked that baseball player. What i would like to Say is this… C Sawyer is a solid option as the 4th overall catcher, and Rivas for me is the 5th in the Depth chart. But given the experience las year with Pham missing a month with a broken wrist, i wouldnt mind having Sawyer as the third and Rivas fouth, theres another catcher, Komza or sometging, homza, and a 7th option is Hernández a young prospect but, realistically, only the first 6 on the Depth chart are real options. We’re good FOR NOW, if theres an injury to Caratini or Campusano, a trade for a backup catcher is needed, given the amount of players that can be dealt, guys like Trevor Williams whos out of minor league options, could be traded for a catcher
