Dodgers Claim Ashton Goudeau From Giants

By Mark Polishuk | April 10, 2021 at 2:20pm CDT

The Dodgers announced that right-hander Ashton Goudeau has been claimed off waivers from the Giants.  Goudeau was designated for assignment by San Francisco earlier this week.

In less than five months’ time, Goudeau has now been a member of five different organizations.  After making his MLB debut with the Rockies last season, Goudeau went to the Pirates, Orioles, Giants, and now the Dodgers in a series of waiver claims.  The 28-year-old has also previously pitched in the Mariners and Royals farm systems during a pro career that began when the Royals selected Goudeau in the 27th round of the 2012 draft.

Over 563 2/3 innings in the minors, Goudeau has started 70 of 171 games and posted a 4.81 ERA, 20.44% strikeout rate, and 6.23% walk rate.  His first taste of Major League action resulted in a 7.56 ERA over 8 1/3 innings over four appearances with Colorado in 2020.

Hahah, yeah, the Dodgers are the best thing that happened to baseball. 1 ring since ‘88 and a shortened season title.

Giants have maybe one position player (Posey) who could start for the Dodgers. Maybe one starter could be in the Dodger rotation (Cueto) but that’s a stretch. Giants could actually improve picking up the Dodgers’ trash.

Wait until he gets some of Bauer’s goop.
Like the padres did with Joe Musgrove.

They’ll turn him into a Cy Young Award recipient and he’ll turn around and beat us 4 times a year like the rest of them do.

Some of that trash turns into gold….we took Max Muncy the A’s trash and he’s turned out pretty damn good…same with Justin Turner from the Mets….when was the last time the Giants even had a winning record? I’m getting old so my memory doesn’t go back quite that far.

Dodgers are just doing Moneyball correctly: getting some pieces for cheap while spending big to fill in the blanks. Beane always said the missing element was also adding money to the mix, to maintain the team. Theo Epstein also did it the right way, twice.

This is where Dodgers fans should be flexing their superior front office though, they truly are the #1 in the game. They probably will turn Goudeau into a lights out closer.

Sad you can’t remember 2016 and the best team from 2010 to 2020 with not one, not two, but three FULL season titles!

@balk so you can only live in the past because giants have been relatively irrelevant the last 6 years. That’s rich, keep the salt

The Angels and many other reams had Oliver Drake, and Kirby Yates too. When they picked up Knebel I was pretty excited to see who he was going to bounce back. Goo Angels!

Some of these takes, from both Giants and Dodgers fans are ridiculous. You would think he’s a potential CY candidate, or trash. He’s neither, he’s minor league depth. He has some intriguing numbers, but it’s not a huge loss for the Giants, nor is it a huge pickup for the Dodgers. The Giants were hoping to sneak him through waivers and stash him in Sacramento, but failed. Don’t be surprised if another team claims him from the Dodgers when they try to do the same. It seems like teams like his potential, but not enough to keep him over other guys on their rosters.

Goudeau is bad-o but if waiver claims are counted he does have one of the better coffee cup collections in the game today.

Very odd to be cast off by the Pirates AND the Orioles and wind up in the Dodgers organization.

Yeah. One thing those two teams have happen is let someone talented leave and watch them do better elsewhere

Clearly there’s something teams are intrigued by Goudeau. I’m guessing it’s spin rate related but could be a number of things. 5 teams claiming in one year… someone keeps seeing something

Edit. What do you know. It’s spin rates. Teams are trying to keep him on the fringe of their 40 man, and slip him thru waivers. If he sucked he’d have gone unclaimed by now google.com/amp/s/rumbunter.com/2020/11/29/pittsbur…

Baseball is loaded with players with unfulfilled potential. The fact that one team after takes a flier on them doesn’t mean they have the secret sauce to fix whatever is keeping them from realizing their potential. Roster moves like this one should raise other more important questions, such as why they’d take up a roster slot on such a marginal waiver claim.
