Brewers Place Kolten Wong On 10-Day IL

By Mark Polishuk | April 10, 2021 at 2:10pm CDT

2:10PM: Wong’s injury may be “on the minor side,” manager Craig Counsell told reporters (including Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel).  A firmer timeline will be established after Wong undergoes more treatment, but the team is hopeful he won’t be out of action for much beyond the 10-day minimum.

10:28AM: The Brewers have officially announced the moves, placing Wong on the 10-day IL with a left oblique strain.  Peterson’s minor league contract was selected, and to create a 40-man roster spot, righty Bobby Wahl was moved to the 60-day injured list.

10:03AM: The Brewers are placing second baseman Kolten Wong on the 10-day injured list due to an oblique injury, FanSided’s Robert Murray writes.  Utilityman Jace Peterson will be called up to take Wong’s spot on the active roster.

An IL stint seemed likely for Wong considering that he missed Wednesday’s game and then was forced into an early exit from Thursday’s game due to the same oblique problem.  No timetable is yet known for Wong’s return, as oblique injuries can sometimes require several weeks of recovery time based on the severity of the issue.

Even a shorter-term absence is an unfortunate outcome for both Wong and the Brewers, as the former Gold Glover just joined the team on a two-year, $18MM free agent contract during the offseason.  Wong’s injury also emerged just two days after Milwaukee traded shortstop Orlando Arcia to the Braves, so the Brewers are now even more short-handed in the infield.

The left-handed hitting Peterson and the right-handed hitting Daniel Robertson could form a second base platoon while Wong is out of action, with Travis Shaw and Luis Urias remaining as the everyday options at third base and shortstop, respectively.  Keston Hiura could also see some time at his old second base position, if the Brewers wanted to move him away from first base and give Daniel Vogelbach some playing time.  Dee Strange-Gordon just recently signed to a minor league deal for additional depth (perhaps essentially as Arcia’s replacement) and could see some time with the big league team in relatively short order depending on how the Brewers juggle the roster.

Forget Cal Ripken Jr.’s record. Anyone who can make it through April without an injury is an Ironman this year. It would be comical except that it’s not.

does Hiura have a massive hole in his swing? it amazes me how much he’s struggling. i thought that guy was going to be a star.

It’s time for a trip to the eye doctor or to AAA…he does not belong on a major league roster at this point. This has been going on since the start of last year. It’s no longer a slump…this is what Keston Hiura is now, and that really sucks because at one point he really looked like he was going to be a great hitter. I’m beginning to doubt that he will ever rebound…sure hope I’m wrong.

And please, please, please do not attempt to play him at second base again. That’s brutal to watch!

“This is what Keston Hiura is”. So glad you’re not involved in any decision making with the Brewers. Or any organized baseball organization including little league.

You’re right but dude is giving up on Hiura. After 8 games. In April. Let that sink in.

          2ld –
It’s not 8 games, buddy. He was absolutely horrible last year as well….he hit .212 with a negative WAR. But apparently you aren’t interested in doing any research and just want to act like a know it all fool. Why don’t you let that sink in. Get a clue. It’s because of people like you that I’m beginning to hate the comment sections of these articles.

I think KCJ makes a real good point. At 24 years old, it’s obviously too late for Hiura to show any real improvement. Career-wise he’s averaging 17 at bats per home run. Bryce Harper averages 17.5 at bats per home run, and we all know how much he sucks. Keston seems pretty smart though, Maybe the Brewers can find a nice job for him in the front office, but as far as between the lines goes, I’m afraid he’s done. I mean if your only a slightly better hitter that Bryce Harper, why bother showing up at all?

His high strikeout and low walk numbers are starting to catch up to him.

Ok too soon to give up on Huira , yes he does need to go back to minors when there season starts. Let Garcia get some play a little first. Wouldn’t be surprised if Vogel gets dfa when Nottingham is healthy because he can play some first too. Honestly I would not be surprised if the Brewers trade Garcia or Cain at sometime during the year. Simply because if they are able to unload Cain and Garcia contracts by next year, you could see Milwaukee go after one of the shortstop in the off-season. Wong contract be a one year deal possibly with Urias moved to second

Damn, I hope you’re mostly wrong. Because the scenarios you point out sound exactly like the one step forward, two steps back approach by Stearns/Counsell over the past few years. This is why the Brewers are usually competitive and seem to be never able to reach the top two steps.

He gets his first start at 2B and finally homers – 1st multi-hit game of young year. Maybe the defensive change too much pressure?
