Dodgers Place Gavin Lux On Injured List, Activate Brusdar Graterol

By Anthony Franco | April 18, 2021 at 2:14pm CDT

The Dodgers are placing second baseman Gavin Lux on the 10-day injured list with right wrist soreness, retroactive to April 16, Jorge Castillo of the Los Angeles Times and Juan Toribio of MLB.com were among those to pass along. Infielder Sheldon Neuse is being recalled to take his place on the active roster. Additionally, right-hander Brusdar Graterol is being activated from the injured list, with fellow reliever Alex Vesia optioned out in a corresponding move.

Lux is having issue swinging a bat, manager Dave Roberts told reporters (including Bill Plunkett of the Orange County Register), but the Dodgers don’t believe he’ll be in for lengthy absence. Roberts noted he expects Lux to be in position to return when first eligible for activation on April 26. The Dodgers will turn to Neuse, who was acquired from the Athletics over the offseason, this afternoon to make his team debut.

Like Neuse, Graterol is in position to play for the first time this season. The fireballing reliever was delayed in camp but returns to the bullpen a couple weeks into the regular season. He tossed 23.1 innings of 3.09 ERA/3.70 SIERA ball last season.

To clear 40-man roster space for Graterol’s activation, the Dodgers placed right-hander Ashton Goudeau on waivers, where he was claimed by the Rockies. Goudeau actually broke into the majors with Colorado last season, tossing 8.1 innings over four games. He’s since bounced between a handful of teams on waivers, going from the Rockies to the Pirates to the Orioles to the Giants before landing in Los Angeles. Now, he’ll head back to the Rockies in hopes of sticking on a roster. To clear 40-man roster space for Goudeau, Colorado transferred utilityman Chris Owings (thumb) to the 60-day injured list.

DJ Peters can’t buy a callup and Goudeau is being passed around like candy.

Honestly it says a lot about Goudeau as a prospect that he’s so desirable on waivers as a late-20s prospect with scant Majors experience.

Figures Goudeau would never throw a pitch as a Dodger. The waiver claim never made much sense in the first place.

His spin rates are insane. They were trying to keep him but everyone sees the same thing. Hence 6 claims already this year?

If only spin rates and velocity made someone a pitcher. The odds of him holding onto a roster slot were basically zero. The Dodgers have so many better options.

I don’t disagree. La has a lot of better options.
But 6 teams now have tried to sneak him thru waivers in the last half year? Or at least held him at the end of the 40 trying to solve the puzzle?

Stats or statcast wise, all I can see that’s elite is the spin rate.
La has fixed a lot of pitchers over the last few years. Not shocking they’d take a shot while they had the 40 man spot. It also wouldn’t shock me if they claim him again in the future

High spin rate guys can be worth a lot. Can=key word

Peters hasn’t earned a callup. I’m, pretty sure AF and DR know what they’re doing,

Not saying he earned it or not. Just that his stock has certainly fallen.

I would like to see Graterol find his way to Boston. Bloom wanted him.

If they really wanted him they would have acquired him in the Betts trade. The Sox backed out of the initial deal literally because they were second guessing getting Graterol from the Twins based on his medicals. The Dodgers changed it up by adding Jeter Downs to the trade so Brusdar would become a Dodger. Trust me I remember as if it was yesterday because I thought the whole trade was falling apart at the time lol

Dumping Puig and Kemp on the Reds helped the Dodgers get Mookie Betts. Remember the fans who criticized the Reds trade at the time?

and to be honest given how Lux was hitting his active roster spot was probably in jeopardy.

Lux has been fine. Hitting in some tough luck but playing fantastic defense. He is the starting 2B and a budding all-star. This front office would not demote such a talented player so soon. That’s something fans do. Zero complaints about this roster and how it is being managed.

Lux was in NO way shape or form about to lose his spot – That’s just silly talk

He swung a hot bat out of the gate. They obviously believe that this wrist injury is affecting his performance. I doubt he’s going to be sent down this season.

Gotta love all these dodger fans telling people who watch the team how players have looked

Lux hurt his groin. That’s why he’s on the il. It has nothing to do with performance based on a crap BABIP

I’ll edit my post and say I see they mentioned the wrist. The radio broadcast said it was his groin but guess they were mistaken or I misheard

          Still. Lux wasn’t going anywhere

Doesn’t losing Bellinger count as something? They’ve also played nearly the first three weeks of the season without either Kelly or Graterol.

The dodgers don’t have their starting CF, LF, 2B and two key relievers

and yet they are still 3 innings from a SD sweep in SD

Gavin Lux is the worst performer on the Dodgers. Zach McKinstry can play 2B and has hit better. This is an addition by subtraction.

Mckinstry’s infield defense has not been good in a SSS. His bat has been fantastic, his glove, especially at 2B, was nothing to write home about

His defense had a direct hand in at least one of their 2 losses so far. It’s why CT3 has mostly been at 2B since lux has been out of the lineup

I feel like this would be two posts: one on the Dodgers’ IL moves, the other on the Rockies claiming Goudeau & 60-daying Owings. What gives?

It’s in the story; Goudeau was waived to make a spot for Graterol. Enough connection to put in the same story IMO. Especially since the Rockies move doesn’t really rate a story of its own.

The headline does read as if it was Lux for Graterol, and there was a lot more going on. But agree the waiving of Goudeau wouldn’t normally warrant more than a single bullet point in a joint post

Nah. Umpires wanted to go home. What a joke. There must have been double digits balls called strikes against LA. And most were awful

They have been horrible two series in a row for LA

That ump made it his mission to expand the zone on LA.
I hope Roberts gives him an ear full next time he misses that many calls.

Seemed rather peculiar indeed … have to wonder if MLB wants to keep the stove heated up here allowing SD to sneak a couple wins in

Today was terrible, one of the worst calls I ever seen on Taylor in the 8th

I hate conspiracy theories but it was pretty ridiculous. He missed a few against SD I fully admit, but the ones against LA were consistently just awful

I hate when umpires mess with exciting baseball. Taking away the ability to be patient from the dodgers is like shooting a runner in the foot then telling him to sprint for the olympics. The series could have been that much better. Wish mlb cared about the quality of their umpires.
