White Sox Finalize Season-Opening Roster

By Connor Byrne | April 1, 2021 at 5:58pm CDT

The White Sox finalized their season-opening roster Thursday, announcing they have selected the contracts of outfielder Billy Hamilton and outfielder/first baseman/designated hitter Andrew Vaughn (previously reported). They also placed outfielder Eloy Jimenez on the 60-day injured list as he recovers from a torn left pectoral tendon, while Adam Engel (strained right hamstring) and left-handed reliever Jace Fry (microdisectomy) went to the 10-day IL. Additionally, the White Sox outrighted lefty Nik Turley. Because Turley has been outrighted in the past, he’ll have the right to elect free agency.

The most experienced player in this group is Hamilton, whom the White Sox signed to a minor league contract two weeks ago. Hamilton’s chances of making the roster increased significantly when they lost both Jimenez and Engel to injuries. The former Red, Royal, Brave, Met and Cub will open the season on Chicago’s fifth outfielder behind Luis Robert, Vaughn, Adam Eaton and Leury Garcia.

While the 30-year-old Hamilton has never hit much in the majors, where he has posted a .241/.296/.325 line through 3,125 plate appearances, his speed and defense have kept him in the league. Hamilton has stolen 305 bases on 376 attempts – good for a success rate of 81-plus percent – and totaled 72 Defensive Runs Saved with a 56.2 Ultimate Zone Rating as a center fielder. That combination could make him a useful reserve for the White Sox.

          Can Collins be any worse?

They have enough relievers. They’re missing two OFs and Hamilton won’t be used unless pinch run, or extra innings.

Ryan Burr wasn’t gonna make the team anyway

It’s a real bummer. Grandal couldn’t catch a Bummer pitch.
Sox should use McCann behind the plate in those clutch situations……oh wait…. I think he’s in NY.

You are one of the biggest idiots that comes on here. McCann was a nobody catcher before he went to the White Sox where he revitalized his downward career in the past two years.

Meh, go ahead and let Dogbone have his moment. He will be so disappointed throughout this year and the next several years, he might as well cherish these small victories.

He’s just angry that Grandal is one of the best C’s in the game. When you’re one of the best, the only thing the haters can do is nitpick your game.

Madigral’s error was huge last night which it changed the momentum in that inning. After all it’s the first game of the year where it is very early in the season but I think Giolito should have finished off the inning rather than being pulled.

Magridal’s fielding is starting to look like Micah Johnsons and that, for those who do not know, is a bad thing. I do not care of he goes 4 for 4 in a game, if his error coughs up a few more runs for the other side then its all for naught.
There are no room for sloppy errors in the field, that may work against weaker teams but it will not work against teams that look like playoff ones.. I hope LaRussa has a quicker hook for such guys than Renteria did..

All that we can hope for is that Madigral learns from his mistakes in the field. Madigral is still young where we can develop his skills as a MLB second baseman. It’s too early in the season but we all know errors can change the momentum in the game especially with the mentality of a pitcher who threw a great pitch that led to a routine fielding play.

We still need to be a little cautious with Tim Anderson’s fielding. Anderson did win the batting title in 2019 but he led the league in errors as a short stop and more importantly as an everyday player where he missed a significant time that year.

Hey BV, how did you like Tony not challenging the out-stealing call on Madrigal? Tony said he ran out of time. Maybe he was fixing his hair, or adjusting his pants. I kinda like Tony in your dugout and in charge of things.

@83sox. Grandal might have been a top catcher back in 2014, but this is 2021. McCann is much better, all around. In the Chisox most important games last year – McCann was behind the plate, and Grandal was either at 1B or DH.

Nope. You’re right about one thing, this is 2021. Grandal is still one of the best C’s in baseball. I know, it’s a tough pill to swallow, but the truth is the truth.

The only one I can remember, was the playoff game they lost because he didn’t catch the perfect throw coming in, from RF, that had the base runner beat.

Dogbone, Grandal’s career has been better than McCann’s career. Numbers don’t lie! McCann was a nobody in Detroit with terrible offensive numbers and was let go by the Tigers. The White Sox revitalize McCann’s career. For your theory behind McCann catching more games last year was for him to prove himself to get a deal which the Mets gave him. The White Sox having Grandal share time behind the plate Collins for the next three year has been the plan when they signed Grandal after drafting Collins.

Your baseball logic is all biased on your hate for the White Sox. It’s kind of pathetic! By the way, what team do you actually cheer for?

Tsk, Tsk, Tsk. Selective memory, Dogbone.

If I recall, Grandal caught in several games in Sept. In fact, if you think about it with a 60 game season, every game last season took on much more importance. Funny how you remember the few bad plays he ever had in a Sox uniform and treat it as an everyday occurrence for him.

Dude, you don’t sign a guy for $18/M a year – ‘to share time’. That wasn’t ‘the plan’.
Maybe you didn’t hear Ozzie last night? In his post game comments – he ranted about how they can’t have a catcher who ‘Ole’s’ pitches. That’s a quote.

Dogbone, you must have a really IQ. Your knowledge on baseball is just terrible. It’s like talking to a child that does not any better or just lacks knowledge or you just ate a lot of paint chips or drank a lot of bleach as a child.

It’s simple! Grandal and Collins will share time behind the plate. When Collins is catching Grandal can be the DH or just have day off for the next three years. Collins is under the White Sox control until 2026.

We will see Collins catch for Cease. Collins caught for Cease, Kopech and other pitchers in the minor leagues. Collins and Cease have a connection with each other in AA and AAA ball, where Cease was dominating with Collins catching for him. That’s my assumption with what we will see this year to give Grandal a day off or two a week where he can rest or play DH.

One of the biggest reasons the White Sox brought in Grandal was to mold Collins for the next three years. Both Grandal and Collins are products from the University of Miami where they have a relationship prior to them both becoming members of the Chicago White Sox. Anyone who says Grandal is a terrible catcher is a legit moron and just talks out of his or her ass with no knowledge.

McCann was a cast off before the White Sox brought him to revitalize his career where he started to hit better around that line up of Abreu, Anderson, Moncada and Jiminez. McCann earned his spot to the 2019 All Star team but his second half was terrible that year when players like Moncada, Anderson and Jiminez missed time due to injuries. If anyone does not think McCann was getting better offensively batting around these guys is just plain ignorant when it comes to having protection in a line up. Maybe McCann can show the same potential batting in the Mets’ line up but we shall see since that White Sox line up is a little more potent than the Mets.

It was a tough game to lose for certain. Allowing an 0-2 pitch to be hit by Upton for an RBI hurts. Walking two guys ahead of him hurts. Errors definitely hurt. It was one game and seeing Robert get a hit is great and make defensive plays. I still would have rather seen them keep Williams than Hamilton, all jokes aside. Signing Lamb seems like a move suggested by LaRussa. He knows him from the Diamondbacks. He is not all that versatile, but hits lefthanded so that is a plus. Yoimer Sanchez was still out there for a song yet they passed on him. I think this team will be fine and glad they are opening in some warmer weather.
