Angels Activate Anthony Rendon, Designate Jon Jay

By Connor Byrne | May 14, 2021 at 5:22pm CDT

The Angels have activated third baseman Anthony Rendon from the 10-day injured list and designated outfielder Jon Jay for assignment, the team announced.

The Angels are welcoming back Rendon from his second IL stint of the young season. He went on the shelf on April 12 with a left groin strain and landed back on it May 5 with a left knee contusion. When Rendon has been well to play, he has continued to offer high-end production, having slashed .276/.348/.466 (131 wRC+) with three home runs in 66 plate appearances. The Angels used Phil Gosselin and Jose Rojas at the hot corner during Rendon’s most recent trip to the IL.

Jay has yo-yoed on and off the Angels’ 40-man roster this year, as this is already the second time the club has designated him since the middle of April. The 36-year-old has gone 5-for-14 with all singles this season.

Its just not fair to the fans Imo………. even bad Owners/Fo try and make an effort even if they fail time after time……

They are lucky to be based in SoCal with a limited/No history ….. really sets up well for Arte to cash in on the low expectations ………fans should gather together and protest going to games until Arte sells

I’ve said this be4, but I don’t even like the Angels and they frustrate me

They did nothing about the bullpen, that’s the biggest reason they stink. If anyone other than Watson, Mayers or Iglesias come into the game they as likely to win that game as th 62 Mets. And how many fans gave a darn when they did nothing?

Zero effort is made to fix the bullpen. Think they have like 8 blown saves this year. Extremely frustrating being a fan of this team.

        • Halo11Fan

It’s not just the 8 blown saves. When they come into a game, before long the game is out of reach and the Angels have no chance to catch up. They are awful at keeping the game close. They are awful at preventing inherited runners from scoring.

The Angels threw a lot of mud on the wall and only Watson stuck. The results were completely predictable.

        • Cap & Crunch

The starters are not playoff caliber Imo either 11

Yup the bullpen is complete trash, Iglesias could not look less interested, odd being a FA year but it just seems theres zero culture in the team that resonates winning being a big deal and that probably stems directly from the guy cutting the checks

We’ve all had those early life jobs where management was completely lost…..as employees we ran with it , not against the wind in those circumstances; and thats what I think is kinda happening here…

Its a toxic work environment for winning

        • Halo11Fan

The starters keep them in most games. But I never blame an owner for not committing big money to starters. It’s a long term commitment and the downside is huge. But there is no excuse for not making short term bullpen investments. Typically the contracts are short term and the risk can be spread out.

But the Angels don’t even try. They hope and pray every year.

I hear ya with the risk in arms but too me its more of a risk to not have (At least) a solid #1/2 punch

With the current playoff format, and way its heading moreso in the future , you need to invest at the top of the rotation Imo…..

Ryu and Wheeler seemed like great candidates the last couple years to move that process along

Where I wouldn’t want to invest in arms is where the Angels typically do in the shorter higher AAV wildcards like the Teheran’s Cahill Cobbs Harveys Quintana’s of the world ….. those 3~5 spots should hopefully have internal options but thats a whole nother bag with the Angels…. Furthermore, its like, even if one of these guys did excel he would be a FA next year……….its just so shortsighted IMO

Sure there was effort, they let a bunch of crummy guys go, they just replaced them with different crummy guys.

I wanted Wheeler as well. And I wrote as much long before Cole signed.

I’m just saying I don’t get frustrated when the Angels don’t commit big money for free agent pitchers. It’s a huge risk.

Building a bullpen is not a huge long term risk and because the contracts can be spread around to several players it’s not a huge monetary risk. I do get frustrated with the way the Angels build their pen. There is no excuse for phoning it in every year.

Jon Jay can still play. Baseball Reference has his WAR at 0.1, so hopefully some teams sabermetrics and algorithm systems flag him as a player for them to pick up as a bench player or pinch hitter.

I know you’re being facetious, but you’re more right than you think. Jay’s WAR from 2019-2020 was -1.2 though, so I can’t imagine many teams are interested.

Good to see Tony Two-Bags back in action. He continues to be one of the more under appreciated players in the game (though Xander B. may be #1 these days). Solid offensively and defensively, doesn’t take any plays off. Fun to watch.

I will never understand why the angels won’t sign decent pitchers. They spend all kinds of money but don’t address their biggest need. They won’t even sign middle of the rotation guys, just back end guys and expect to make the playoffs. They don’t really sign any mid-top tier relief pitchers, It’s lunacy.

Absolutely agree. Every off season there are better pitchers available then over-the-hill retreads. Kickell (sp?) is an example and he’s been available several years in a row too. Then this off season the Rays let Morton go and where does he go? The Padres! The Angels need to stop striking out on the next free agent superstar starting pitcher on the off season menu and just sign some LEGIT #2 & #3 starters, not has-been #6’s! Last offseason they miss out on Cole, this season Bauer and then have to settle for has-been, worn-out never-had-it in the first place and certainly don’t-have-it-now 6’s! This has gotten so old, and changing GMs hasn’t gotten a damn thing better at all!

Good luck with that. Moreno has no incentive to sell because he could care less about giving the community a winning team and he’s making money hand over fist.

Braves need to go get Jay immediately for OF depth. He’s not amazing but he’s a solid ball player and one any team should be happy to have on the roster somewhere.
