Blue Jays Select Reese McGuire, Move Julian Merryweather To 60-Day IL

By Connor Byrne | May 5, 2021 at 6:16pm CDT

The Blue Jays have selected the contract of catcher Reese McGuire and moved right-handed reliever Julian Merryweather to the 60-day injured list in a corresponding move, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet was among those to report. The team also optioned catcher Riley Adams to Triple-A Buffalo.

McGuire – whom Toronto acquired from Pittsburgh in 2016 – impressed earlier in his major league career, hitting an eyebrow-raising .297/.343/.539 with seven home runs in 138 plate appearances from 2018-19. But 2020 didn’t go well off or on the field for McGuire, who was arrested prior to the season and then proceeded to hit a terrible .073/.073/.146 over 45 plate appearances. The Blue Jays outrighted McGuire off their 40-man roster last month, but he’s now back with a team that’s looking for help behind the plate. Danny Jansen has posted horrid production so far this year, while Alejandro Kirk will be out for the foreseeable future with a left flexor strain.

Merryweather went on the IL on April 14 with a left oblique strain, and his shift to the 60-day version means he won’t return until at least the middle of June. The hard-throwing 29-year-old served as a bright spot for Toronto’s bullpen in the early going this season, as he put up 4 1/3 innings of scoreless, one-hit ball with seven strikeouts, a walk and two saves.

The dude’s only 26 years old. He’s not past his prime, so there’s a good chance you see the climax of his career this season. Statistically, the chances are good that he’s going to explode this year and you might catch all of it.

I just came here to say the cardinals are a 500 teams overachieving. I have nothing against the players I just wanted the fans to not be surprised by July when they are struggling to win a weak division. That’s all.

Yep, he’s a slippery one. They tried to push him down but he keeps popping back up again.

This is a horrible move by the Jays. WHAT WILL I TELL THE CHILDREN ABOUT THIS? I don’t have any children, but if I did or if I see any children in the neighborhood, what will I tell them?

This doesn’t really make sense…I like McGuire and think he is a better catcher than Jansen but neither of them can hit. What were they afraid of by trying Adams? He might hit and they would have to play him over Jansen?

McGuire can hit, or atleast he had a prior track record of hitting. They like Jansen because he’s considered good with the staff.

That said, I also would have liked to see some plate appearances for Adams. My only guess as to why not is maybe they felt he wasn’t comfortable enough with the major league staff to catch a game in the regular season yet…

McGuire never hit all the way through the minors. Jansen’s bat has a much better track record. One year of 90-some ABs a while back where McGuire got lucky doesn’t change that.

If Jays catchers were the Corleone family, Riley Adams would be Fredo. Passed over by Kirk, given zero chances over a couple games and suddenly Reese is up. Now, I understand the idea giving Jansen the next 5+ weeks to figure things out. Jays couldn’t split the time between Riley and Jansen?

Yes, Riley can have regular at bats in Buffalo. He can also learn and play 40-50% with the Jays, simultaneously learning from the best and potentially playing more if he were to hit. Jays clearly feel more confident in Reese, which says a lot about their confidence in Riley.
