Giants Claim Braden Bishop

By Connor Byrne | May 17, 2021 at 3:33pm CDT

The Giants have claimed outfielder Braden Bishop off waivers from the Mariners, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area tweets. They shifted reliever Reyes Moronta to the 60-day injured list in a corresponding move, per Kerry Crowley of the Bay Area News Group.

The 27-year-old Bishop is returning to his native Bay Area and joining the same organization as his brother, Hunter, a fellow outfielder and the 10th overall pick of the Giants in the 2019 draft. Hunter Bishop hasn’t reached the majors yet, but Braden Bishop has taken 99 plate appearances at the sport’s highest level. He only hit .133/.188/.156 as a Mariner, leading the team to designate him for assignment last week.

Despite his struggles in the bigs, Bishop has at least a couple things working in his favor. For one, he still has a minor league option left, so the Giants can call him up and send him down at their leisure for the rest of the season. And Bishop has shown that he can handle Triple-A pitching, having batted .267/.355/.465 in 231 PA there.

Bishop Brothers seem like they’re very close based off of social media. It’s cool that they’re in the same org now.

Thanks, I wrote then when it just said more to come. I should have just waited. It is unclear to me where he fits in the big league roster with Yaz & Dickerson back.

With Duggar playing well and Solano due back its going to be tricky. Beede in June too. I expect a player or 2 (Wade and ??) to be dfa’d to clear a 40 man slot. TBD

        • whormongr

I have a feeling when beede is back you will have some situation that involves moving someone from the pen and then you either bring beede in as either a starterand move someone from the rotation to the pen (like webb or possibly cueto) or beede goes into the pen until he can transition to the rotation

        • claude raymond

But there will need to be 40 man roster maneuvering cuz beede is on 60 day injury list. That had cleared a 40 man spot. I think a lot depends on how does Webb does until then as regards bullpen/rotation

          geg42:

With Yaz and Dickerson on the ML roster, Bishop doesn’t fit. He’s MiL depth, ideal since he can still be optioned. Should any OF go down with an injury then we might see Bishop.

Beede gets the yips. I just don’t see him as a reliable bullpen piece.

Braden is a plus plus fielder. He needs to show he can hit in the bigs if he can ever get consistent at bats. What a cool story that would be to have two (home grown) brothers playing side by side

For those who don’t know, the Bishop brothers started an Alzheimer’s charity in memory of their late mother, Suzy, who died of the disease in October 2019. Here’s some info for anyone who might be interested.

Great stuff. These two Giants outfielders now have a longtime Dodgers fan rooting like heck for them to succeed.

I’m sure the joke has been made a million times before, but I can’t help but chuckle that his name is Bishop, and the base paths are diagonal from one another, leading me to believe he is a plus baserunner.

“I’d bet no one has made that joke before”. Did you miss the point where I clearly said “I’m sure the joke has been made a million times before”. It’s the first line, in case you missed it.

Reread my comment. The point was not make some unheard of for uproarious laughter. It was to admit that I laughed at a dumb little coincidence (Bishop + Diagonal basepaths). I’m sharing that to invite others to do the same. That is, if someone else had posted this before I realized the connection, I would’ve smiled. If you did not smile, then please move along. The snark is absolutely unnecessary.

Yet another in a long list, and getting longer, of guys who were can’t miss but nonetheless missed.
A hallmark of the Mariners franchise and a reason why mediocrity is so embraced in the PNW.

I don’t know about that …. that’s not a very good line for the PCL. A very average PCL player doesn’t bode well for the major leagues, particularly one at age 27.

nothing more than a sentimental pickup….Braden has very little power, avg speed. He does not look anything more than a 5th OF or defensive purpose late inning replacement

I’ve watched nearly every major league game he’s played in and some spring training games and a couple AAA games. His speed and glove are his only real plus attributes, as noted in any prospect profile you will find. Dude can run, no doubt about it.

As a Mariners fan I can tell you this kid is a great guy.

As a player, he can run and field but his bat is not good. He probably fits a NL club better as he can be used situationally.

Should have waited to see what the M’s were going to do with Haniger. I’m sure if he was to get traded he would be a better fit for the Giants. Also not to mention the Giants are Haniger’s hometown team.

Seems like teams are very cautious and placing guys on the IL pretty quickly so maybe adding some outfield depth isn’t too crazy – even for defensive purposes. Not sure if you saw the play from yesterday in Cincinnati but Yaz came about as close as you can to blowing out an ankle on the play at home. Surprised that it didn’t. Looked worse than it was but wasn’t pretty.
