Mike Montgomery To Opt Out Of Yankees Deal

By Anthony Franco | May 31, 2021 at 8:50am CDT

MAY 31: Montgomery looks to be heading overseas to join the Samsung Lions of the KBO, per Sung Min Kim (via Twitter).  KBO teams are only allotted no more than two roster spots for foreign pitchers, but Ben Lively has been hurt. Montgomery would be taking his roster spot.

MAY 30: Left-hander Mike Montgomery is planning to opt out of his minor league contract with the Yankees on June 1, reports Robert Murray of FanSided (Twitter link). If New York doesn’t select him to the major league roster, he’ll become a free agent.

Montgomery signed with the Yankees in early April, not long after being released from a minors pact with the crosstown Mets. He’s since pitched in four games with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, working to a 7.56 ERA with mediocre strikeout and walk rates (21.1% and 11.8%, respectively) over 16 2/3 innings.  While the 31-year-old has worked exclusively as a starter in the minors this season, he has plenty of experience in a swing role.

Between 2015-20, Montgomery made 183 MLB appearances, 70 of them starts. He’s posted a solid 3.84 ERA over that time, although his best production came earlier in his career. Montgomery pitched to a 4.95 ERA/4.90 SIERA between the Cubs and Royals in 2019, and he was limited to just 5 1/3 frames last year by a lat strain.

The Yankees have gotten good production from their pitching staff this season. New York starters entered play today with a 3.42 ERA that ranks ninth in the league, while their 3.46 SIERA ranks fourth. The bullpen has been even better, sporting MLB’s fourth-lowest ERA (2.92) and third-best SIERA (3.34). New York just lost Corey Kluber for two-plus months, though, leaving some uncertainty at the back of the rotation. Deivi García and Michael King have picked up starts in Kluber’s absence.

      Man.
      Right?

Our offense is downright offensive right now. Memorial Day weekend so I’m prone to believe this is well past a slump.

Every team in MLB is banged up right now so our normal excuse has been usurped. Every time I think we are starting to come around we string together a few games where the bats just completely disappear.

This is not what I expected out of this club.
      At all.

Getting curb stomped by Detroit is alarming.
Gittens is killing it in AAA and there are no immediate plans to bring him up.
Florial goes 1 for 3 in his only game in the bigs and they send him back down.
I’m usually patient (especially for a Yankees fan) but I’ve had enough of this crap.

          Ugly game, ugly series.

I’m just not sure what the answer is here, @Joe. Bring back the rabbit ball? It’s been a putrid showing by a group of guys I felt would certainly be a top three scoring offense.

It’s Judge & Stanton (scuffling himself since he got back) & a whole lotta nuthin’. Even DJ doesn’t look very good.

I keep thinking they’ll come around to play to the back of their baseball cards, but “it’s getting late early out there”.

@Ducky What we see is what we get, man, so hopefully the team rights its ship soon. Then we got the Rays who aren’t hamstrung by the CBT and could be small buyers before the deadline. I don’t usually panic but I’m starting to because it’s not just one or two batting underachievers.

Ducky, I just thought that I would share that the Tigers lost 3 out of 4 to the Indians prior to the Yankee series. I just had to share that.

Detroit is not ready to compete in the division, but give them some credit, their pitching was nasty. Mize, Turnbull, and Skubal are the base of the rebuild. When is the last time the Yankees developed three young starters, at the same time? Yes they lost 3 out of 4 to Cleveland, but Cleveland has pitching. Currently, its better than Detroit’s.

Injuries to Voit, Hicks and Stanton (I know, not surprising) are beyond anyone’s control.

And yeah, Clint & DJ’s regression is a lot bigger than expected.

But Judge is having his best season since his rookie year.
Sanchez is having a much better year than last season.
Andujar is having a better season than 2019

And the others shouldn’t be surprising.

Gleyber is hitting about the same as last season.
Odor’s performance is in line with his prior two seasons
Urshela is reverting back to what he was after basically just one full season of overachieving.

If you were watching the Detroit series, it showed that Sanchez is terrible as a C. Also, Detroit has some nice young starting pitching.

Voit and Hicks were also not producing when they were healthy.

I would hope Sanchez is better, you can’t get much worse unless your name is Chris Davis. That’s a very low bar to set.

Andujar has lost his gap power, he looks nothing like he did as a rookie. His OPS+ is a 34. If you put lipstick on a pig, it’s still a pig. He’s part of the problem of not being able to score runs.

Mike Ford has also been putrid. We brought in Odor, who is a known sub .200 hitter – that should tell you how desperate the team is.

Gardner also looks like he’s toast, and not just as a hitter.

          Gleyber’s power has vanished.

And DJLM has been OK, but he looks like he’s going to be a 90 OPS+ type, not the batting title stud he was the past two seasons.

He has a World Series ring, so they should call him up so he can provide “leadership” and “guidance” to players that don’t have one yet. I believe it gives him a few sabermetric GRIT and INTANGIBLES points, but I haven’t read Bill James new algorithms yet.

All frustrated Yankees fans, as I am one of them.
When the power rankings came out before the season started, they all had the Yankees and the LAD in the world series, I just had to laugh…
The Yankees are the most overrated team in baseball. Let’s just face the “truth”. The Yankees are a horrible team and won’t even make the post season.

This is another year of just wasting Cole’s prime!!! We literally ‘could’ve’ had a great team with all the awesome FA’s this off season and trades Hal shot down because Hal just had to stay under $210M and go dumpster diving at the MLB rehabbing clinic. Hal signed all the garbage players simply because they were CHEAP (except Kluber $11M). Look at him now…
Honestly, at this time, they would lose to college teams.

I don’t even want to get into Boone, Thames, 3rd base couches, Sanchez, Voit, Torres, Hicks, Gardner, Ford, Wade, Odor, Tallion, Peralta, Luetge, Nelson, King, Cortez and more!
Not to mention but, not all the garbage that are on the IL.
Why are these players even on the roster?! Answer, cheap Hal!
WE JUST DO NOT HAVE A GOOD TEAM – PERIOD!

Yankees are a bad team. They don’t have that fearsome lineup that good Yankee teams had. The defense is terrible. The starters are average after Cole. The bullpen is a Yankee bullpen. Except maybe a bit heavy… do you really need $36 mil (plus $9mil for Ottavino) tied up in a bullpen? $% mil in the bullpen? That’s as much as some entire teams and that’s just the bullpen. They play like a third of the game at most. I can see a huge amount for a closer, but a setup guy and another guy at 10 mil and 9 mil each?
And then, why didn’t they focus on defense and left handed hitters? The Yanks have Judge and Stanton in the middle of the lineup. Add a couple lefty hitters to balance out the lineup. Imagine having Brantley in left… Moustakas at third. Get a solid defensive catcher. Adrelton Simmons at short. Torrez could focus on second. Urshela could be an excellent depth piece.
And who would actually offer a long contract to Aaron Hicks? I mean the guy is good, but he’s never on the field.

Dayton Moore loves to resign old Royals. And they are a little short on starters because they don’t trust their young arms for some reason. Royals have a long stretch of no off-days starting Thursday.

We out-righted him & assigned him to AAA but he opted out of there and chose to be a free agent. And we do trust our young arms, Daniel Lynch was sent down to AAA to figure out what was going on with his pitches. He had a really good outing in Omaha the other day so he’ll be back in Kansas City before we know it especially if Danny Duffy is out for a longer amount of time.
