Mets Activate Jeff McNeil; Robert Gsellman Out Up To Eight Weeks

By Mark Polishuk | June 21, 2021 at 5:35pm CDT

5:35pm: The outlook on Gsellman isn’t good, as SNY’s Steve Gelbs reports (via Twitter) that a tear in his lat will cause the right-hander to miss anywhere from six to eight weeks of action. That’ll sideline him well into the season’s second half.

2:19pm: As expected, the Mets activated utilityman Jeff McNeil off the 10-day IL today, so he will take Gsellman’s spot on the active roster.  McNeil has been out of action since May 17 due to a hamstring strain, and he now looks to resume his duty as New York’s regular second baseman.  The former All-Star was off to a bit of a slow start prior to his injury, with only a modest .242/.336/.374 slash line over his first 113 plate appearances.

1:20pm: The Mets will be placing right-hander Robert Gsellman on the 10-day injured list due to a right lat strain, according to SNY’s Andy Martino (via Twitter).  Gsellman last pitched on Saturday, tossing two innings as the opener in the second game of a doubleheader against the Nationals.

The injury is particularly ill-timed, as the Mets have another doubleheader today against the Braves, and then yet another doubleheader against the Phillies on Friday.  Though there is a Thursday off-day in between, the losses of both Gsellman and Joey Lucchesi to the IL within the last couple of days will leave the Mets short on pitching depth for this busy week.

Gsellman has allowed five runs over his last 4 1/3 innings of work, souring what had been a pretty solid season, out of New York’s bullpen.  The righty has a 3.71 ERA/4.47 SIERA over 26 2/3 total innings in 2021, relying on soft contact and a career-best 50.6% grounder rate to counteract a tiny 13.6% strikeout rate.  It was a nice bounce-back for Gsellman following an injury-marred 2020 that saw him post a 9.64 ERA over 14 frames.

Probably means Yennys Díaz stays up after being the 27th man for the doubleheader with WSH.

Why is DeGrom pitching today? Why not let him rest until after the AS Break.

Holding him out til the break could have him missing 3 starts. Why have your best pitcher miss those starts if he doesn’t have to. If he can pitch, he can pitch.

I can think of a few reasons.

        1. What’s the point of having baseballs best pitcher if you don’t play him?

        2. It gives them a massive advantage in any given game. Ya, I thought this was obvious as well, but..

        3. This is a four game series against division rival Braves. The Braves really need to turn it around and they really, REALLY need to take 3/4 in the series, especially because the Mets have dominated the Braves. How demoralizing would it be if it was the Mets that take 3/4? Your chances of doing that is better with deGrom.

Simple… they want to have the best chance to win the game. It’s not a hard concept, who knew someone would actually need help understanding that.

Let’s hope deGrom doesn’t go beyond 5 today in the 7 inning DH. No reason to with the arms that go multiple innings. A once-through-the-lineup start would be stupid though. Either pitch him or rest him. These bullpen arms are taking a heavy workload too.

I’d almost rather see the Mets use an opener and then FOLLOW with deGrom. If an opener can go once through the lineup, deGrom can finish the game.

If he’s at 70 pitches and feels fine, leave him in.

Sigh..the Braves desperately need to take 3/4 in this four game set against the Mets and we’re sending out Kyle Muller to face off against deGrom to start it off.

Muller, a 23 year old pitcher with all of 1 IP in the majors that went very poorly against a pitcher who’s ERA is so small you have to squint to see it. Ya, we got this.

Lucchesi now? What is going on? Not that mad abou gsellman or familia but its ridiculous how many injuries we have had this season. Training staff needs to get fired!

I don’t think you can blame a UCL tear on the trainer. Injuries are up all over, or so it seems.

You should be very mad about Gsellman and Familia going on the IL because the minor leaguers in line to replace them aren’t anywhere near as good as they are

I’m pretty sure yennys Diaz can do just as good a job as familia whose numbers weren’t as good as his Era was and he started to falter.. gsellman can be replaced by Reid Foley with no problem. Luchessi replaced with eickhoff will be a wash. Most likely they will get a pitcher soon.
