Dodgers Reinstate Corey Seager From Injured List

By Anthony Franco | July 30, 2021 at 9:12pm CDT

The Dodgers announced they’re activating star shortstop Corey Seager from the 60-day injured list prior to this evening’s game against the Diamondbacks. He’s in tonight’s starting lineup, hitting cleanup and playing shortstop.

The star shortstop has been out since being hit on the hand with a pitch from Ross Detwiler in mid-May. X-rays revealed a fractured right hand for Seager that was expected to cause him to miss at least a month. Seager ended up more than doubling that timeline, missing 2 1/2 months. In the meantime, the Dodgers went out and acquired another star shortstop in Trea Turner.

Turner recently tested positive for COVID-19 and was placed on the COVID-IL, just a day before being traded. So, Seager can be slotted into the six-hole for now. But it’s unclear how the team will proceed once they have both players on the roster at the same time. Seager spoke to Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic and didn’t seem to be able to shed light on the situation, telling Ardaya that the team has not discussed the situation with him.

Being a free agent at season’s end, the Dodgers have no investment in Seager maintaining as a shortstop for the long-term. Turner, on the other hand, will still be under team control through 2022, having one year of arbitration remaining. Turner also is the better fielder, according to DRS, with Turner at a 10 for his career at shortstop and Seager at -8. UZR is reversed though, having Seager at 5.4 and Turner at -5.6.

Regardless of how it plays out, it’s a good problem to have for the Dodgers. Both players are among the best shortstops in the league. Before going on the IL, Seager had put up a wRC+ of 118. That’s down from his career mark of 129 but still well above the league average of 100. Turner, for his part, has a wRC+ of 137 this year, well above his career number of 121.

Seems like a good get-right scenario. Your team just traded for your replacement, and you come back against Arizona. He should play angry, and rake.

But baseball being baseball, watch Arizona win 4-1.

Getting stronger. Hopefully a deeper lineup gets Bellinger some more pitches to hit.

Bellinger already gets all the pitches he can hit. He needs to right this himself. Can’t hit a home run on every swing!

I think he bakes N rakes a little too often.

Many MLB players have prescriptions for adderall and some find MJ can balance some negative side effects.

Probably doesn’t help you catch up to the high heat though

Why would either of them want to play for a AAA team? I’m sure other teams in contention will offer them as much money.

Why would the Rangers burn nearly $300 mil on a player who might not even be worth the money by the time the team is any good? This makes no sense for anyone involved.

Corey Seager gets on base in his very first at bat back from the 60-day IL.

Don’t care if he reached on error. He’s on base.

And the Yankees will hit six home runs every game thru the end of the regular season. Let the games play out. Everything on paper looks good until it doesn’t play out that way.

Actually, the Yankees hit into 2 more double plays tonight, and thru their trades now claim 9 of the top 50 players in the major leagues who GIDP. Like i said, everything on paper looks good until it doesn’t.

The Dodgers have acquired shortstop Xander Bogaerts off of waivers from the Red Sox, Per ESPN. Good depth signing and hopefully the kid gets a shot at the boys some day.

Another terrible game played by LAD tonight

    Left runner on 3rd o outs 7th

    1st and 2nd 0 outs 8th
    1st and 3rd inning ending Dp 9th

Go to extras and Fall to 1-10 in on the year in extra baseball

This team is great but they don’t particularly play well over the first 102- Those who watch nightly I feel know what I’m saying

I can no longer bear to watch and not especially those close games, which they mostly figure out how to lose even against some of the worst teams. They are playing bad baseball and are only still in the running due to the huge quantity of talent, but it is mostly being wasted. A lot of great players, but a terrible team.

I’ve said for years this team has a problem manufacturing runs and its gotten way worse this year

Its just not in their DNA

You can actually kind of feel them tightening up when things get close….so damn odd…they actually play more composed/loose when they are down 3 then tied…….

Something is broken with the approach. It’s hard to say where, but management needs to figure it out, pronto.

With the amount of shifting going on, does it really matter if you have two shortstops on the field at the same time? Aren’t you simply dealing with two middle infielders who will play on both sides of the second base bag?
