Jacob deGrom Shut Down Another Two Weeks Following Setback

By Steve Adams | July 30, 2021 at 5:42pm CDT

Mets ace Jacob deGrom has suffered a setback in his rehab from a forearm issue, as recent testing revealed additional inflammation, MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo reports (Twitter link). He’ll be shut down from throwing entirely for another two weeks.

It’s already been more than three weeks since deGrom pitched in a game, so he’ll need some form of rehab assignment or buildup once he’s ready to begin throwing again. Given that, it’s hard to imagine him returning to a big-league mound for the Mets prior to September.

The Mets have a 3.5 game lead in the National League East. Neither the Braves nor Phillies – their closest competitors – made significant splashes at today’s deadline, though both clubs did add some pieces in an attempt to contend with New York. The Nationals and Marlins both sold pieces, and the Mets face that pair 11 times in the coming month.

In terms of their own deadline, the Mets clearly had their pitching depth in mind, though they weren’t able to make a significant addition to that end, and besides, no one can fill deGrom’s shoes. Carlos Carrasco is returning, however, and Trevor Williams was a fine pickup from the Cubs as a depth option (he was optioned to Triple-A). Still, the Mets’ viability as a contender would seem to hinge on deGrom’s long-term health.

Clearly, this will be a situation to monitor moving forward. The trade deadline has passed, so the Mets are what they are for the most part, but hopefully, another couple of weeks of rest will be enough to figure out how to get deGrom back on track and ready for the postseason push.

Absolutely a disaster. Anyone watching this team play the reds tonight. A disgrace this team can’t hit. There is no way they continue in first place. Conforto should be sent down he sucks so bad batting 201 but wants to get paid 200 + million are you kidding me he is aaa player at best ok once a week he makes a play in the outfield but his whole career he sucks at the plate not fair to expect biaz to carry this team much more work to be done

Conforto is streaky, but the whole season is no longer streaky or a slump. Play Drury. More hits in a week than Mike has in July.
He must regret not signing in spring training. Let him test FA!

Sandy wants to hold on to every prospect that he originally drafted b4 BVW took over!! But the Wilpons and BVW are the ones to blame because BVW traded away a pile of prospects and it is showing now in the Mets farm system. Mets FO are in a tough predicament right now….

          Yes May

For a pitcher to win the MVP he not only had to have an extraordinary season through 30 starts, he also needs to not have a position player competing with him. “Maybe” at best.

And No. You cannot simply expect a sub 1 era to continue from anyone for 4+ months further. Even degrom

Season was only halfway done. It’s not like he just missed it. He’s not even at the midway point. To your point, he was pitching beautifully and was the best in the game, but talking about CY Youngs for a guy who didn’t make it to July is silly. It’s like talking about a No-Hitter in the 4th inning.

Sigh, that depressing time when the trade deadline is over, everyone is settling in, but it’s still not quite the end of the season yet. And by the way one of the best pitchers just got injured. Sorry to be negative, really pumped for postseason though!

Maybe he’s the best in the game because he’s going 100% every pitch. I have absolutely nothing to back this up, but maybe at 96mph instead of 100mph he’d throw enough innings to make a difference for his team.

Same, but I have heard MLB pitchers say that he doesn’t need to go 100 mph on every pitch. He’s plenty good enough to dial it back, which means he could pitch further into games, and may be less likely to have issues that could send him to the IL., particularly as he ages. He is max effort all the time, and that is potentially problematic.

        @Ted

I’m hoping Dustin May adapts that philosophy going forward. It’s just not natural or sustainable to throw that hard, with that much movement — for 90+ pitches at a time. I mean, even someone like Nolan Ryan didn’t have the crazy movement on his fastball that guys do nowadays — and Ryan was an outlier of longevity nonetheless.

Hopefully deGrom can somehow avoid what seems to be inevitable surgery and come back for the postseason.

Losing DeGrom for any period if time is awful, but a DeGrom-less Mets look better than the rest of the NL east, especially post deadline. They will take the division by 3 games. With an 84 – 78 record. Now I’m going to play Powerball….

If DeGrom is done I don’t know what we’re trying to do via the recent trades. It’s nice the team is trying to stay afloat, but even if we reach the postseason our prospects do not look good. Don’t want to give up any more of our higher-graded prospects for rentals and such.

Clearly the Mets plan on outscoring teams the rest of the season. A team with a recent history of not being able to keep their starters healthy for any given length of time has finally decided it’s not worth figuring out why and just go with offense.

And even that is not a given, despite spending a lot of money and talent on acquiring it.

He was good enough not to reach 100 mph on his fastball, should’ve done it like how verlander pitches when you just throw where you don’t need. Lot of effort and dig back when you need it.

He’s too old if he misses time for surgery, he won’t have enough innings or wins to be voted in w/o 3 CYs.

He’s no Tom Seaver or Nolan Ryan the 2 greatest Mets home grown HOF WS Champs that I grew up watching.

        tstats,
Maybe the HOF should implement a 100 win minimum for starting pitching? deGrom’s at 77 wins, and 100 is looking like a real long shot.

A 100 win requirement for the HOF would be ridiculous. No Mariano Rivera? Why this one stipulation in an otherwise open ended process? For a virtually meaningless stat no less.

When did Mariano become a starting pitcher? Is this revisionist history? Not aware this would be needed. What starting pitcher with less than 100 wins is currently on the Hall?

Absolutely a disaster. Anyone watching this team play the reds tonight. A disgrace this team can’t hit. There is no way they continue in first place. Conforto should be sent down he sucks so bad batting 201 but wants to get paid 200 + million are you kidding me he is aaa player at best ok once a week he makes a play in the outfield but his whole career he sucks at the plate not fair to expect biaz to carry this team much more work to be done

A disaster indeed. It’s impossible to see how adding a .303 career OBP (,292 this year and a .271 OBP in 150 games in 2020-2021) to an offense that can’t score runs will accomplish anything constructive.

The wrongheadedness of getting Baez and a weak AAA arm is breathtaking.

@Bill M — I laughed at the author’s gall in spinning that one.

Consider that Williams is so bad that the Mets currently rank him behind Anthony Banda (6.14 ERA) on their depth chart. As for Williams, some choice numbers:

      2019-2021, 5.48 ERA in the NL. ERA+ 79, 5.24 FIP, 1.475 WHIP.
      Per 9 IP: 7.7 K, 3.0 BB, 1.8 HR, 10.3 H. That’s abysmal.

      In 2021 we’re looking at a 5.06 ERA, 4.52 FIP, 1.534 WHIP, 10.4 H, 1.5 HR.

If the Mets need him, and they will since he’s currently their #6 starter, they’re in far worse trouble than currently.

Meanwhile the Yankees got Andrew Heaney for their #27 prospect. #27. The very fringe of their ranked prospects.

Heaney’s not the greatest prize, but his ERA this season of 5.27 is undergirded by a FIP of 4.05. He has a 4.60 ERA in the AL from 2018-2021, a 97 ERA+, and a strong FIP of 4.11. His peripherals are an acceptable 9.9 K, 2.6 BB, 1.5 HR, 8.6 H/9, 1.248 WHIP.

      Heaney’s 1.1 WAR in 2021 is about what you’d expect from a good #5 starter at this stage of the season. He’s picked up 6.3 WAR in 598 career innings. In 2021: 10.8 K, 3.0 BB, 1.5 HR, 8.8 H, 1.309 WHIP, 4.05 FIP.

As I said, Heaney hardly sparkles, but he’s light years better than Trevor Williams. In failing to get him the Mets lethargic FO did something similar in failing to offer a prospect in the high-20s in their organization for Tyler Anderson, a pitcher similar to Heaney who is also much better than Williams. This prospect hugging by a team desperate for passable starting pitching is abominable.

Just say TJ surgery. The organization knows it, and with that, had the worst trade day. Question is, who will win out, Phillies or Bravos?

His arm is fine. Just a lil set back. Do you really think that the smartest team, with the richest owner in baseball would just sit back and do nothing if he wasn’t going to be healthy dominating your team in the post season.

Walker needs to wake the F- UP, Stroman and Megill has been very good, so far old man Hill did ok , they think strikeout king Baez the Braves traded for a couple of players today, probably and unfortunately gonna catch the Mets, they should of gotten Berrios, Bryant and Kimbrel. All of that waiting down to the wire and come out with Baez and Trevor Williams ? They gave up their CF of the future for that!
