Fernando Tatis Leaves Game With Apparent Shoulder Injury

By Darragh McDonald | July 30, 2021 at 10:07pm CDT

Padres shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. left tonight’s game after sliding into third base and seemingly re-injuring his left shoulder, according to Dennis Lin of The Athletic.

There isn’t any word yet on the severity of the injury. But this is an issue that has been bothering Tatis on-and-off for the entire season. It first flared up in March, before the season even began. Tatis then appeared to re-aggravate the issue, landing on the IL April 6th. Thankfully, he was reactivated after a minimum 10-day stay, being reactivated April 16th. But then on June 19th, Tatis was again removed from a game with what seemed like another shoulder injury. Though Padres manager Jayce Tingler later said that the move was precautionary and Tatis did not end up going back on the IL.

Losing Tatis for any amount of time would be a serious blow to the Padres. They are currently holding down the last playoff spot in the National League, but have the Reds nipping at their heels, just 4 1/2 games back. The calendar will flip over to August on Sunday as teams will be pushing to make their final pushes for the postseason. Tatis has been superb this year, despite dealing with this ongoing injury. He’s produced a 165 wRC+ on the season so far on his way to accruing 4.7 fWAR, easily the best on the team. Tatis and Padres fans will surely be hoping this is just another precautionary measure.

Unfortunately these young exciting guys like tatis and Acuna who play all out put themselves in more positions to get hurt and occasionally they get seriously hurt. The stolen base is slowly disappearing with analytics but it’s got more to do with money. Body gets beat up sliding into bases.

        @ iverbure;

        Agreed.

Tatis and Acuna are 2 hot dogs that want to draw attention to themselves. Their Baseball IQ is terrible. Harper was like this with the Nets, he finally began to wise up when he ran into a wall chancing a fly ball and knocked himself out.

I went back and watched the play. Here was the situation…..

Rockies up 4-0 in the bottom of the 1st inning. Padres basting. One out, Tatis on 1B.

Machado hits a hard groundball to 3B, McMahon is playing a bit deep, He misplays the ball. It goes a few feet in back of him to his right. He picks up the ball up and hesitates a few feet on the LF grass. Tatis runs around 2B and decides to race to 3B. The SS (Rodgers) is maybe 10-15 feet from the 3B bag. McMahon picks up the ball and flips it to Rodgers whose racing Tatis to the bag. To avoid the tag, Tatis dives head-first towards the bag from maybe 7-8 feet away, He’s tagged out, then slides into the bag and hits his shoulder.
        –
So – It’s the 1st inning. Your team is down by 4 runs with one out. There are 8-2/3 innings to catch up. His team would have had runners on 1st and 2nd with one out and his teams 4th and 5h hitters coming up. What exactly is the point of sliding into 3B in that situation? So he can tag up on a fly ball to pull to within 3 runs….in the 1st inning? Or is the point to get on Cable TV highlight reels so you can make more commercials about “”The Game Has Changed!”. as you sell your brand?

Result – The Rockies get out of the inning leading 4-0. The “superstar” is now out injured again for who knows how long. His team is already dejected after the FO did little at the trade deadline, Now this. How exactly does that benefit his team?
        –
Preller is a hot dog GM that has no sense. He appears to have built a team of players that do the same. I’ve watched a number of their games. They’re undisciplined, they play dumb baseball, and they lose games they should have won. I don’t think their FO is respected around the league (GM’s WANT to trade with Preller because he always overpays). I don’t think most teams appreciate the way they play the game and conduct themselves. (And they’re playing a 2B in the OF which he hasn’t played in years at the beginning of a stretch run….lets watch how that affects his hitting the next 2 months.) Everything fits perfectly.

Ya wanna be entertained or ya wanna win and become a champion?

You throw around the term “hot dog” as if some guy going that is going all out is merely stealing your Turkey dog thunder.

I really thought Rizzo and Kimbrel were going to Boston. So glad they didn’t. We might have just found ourselves our new lst basemen for this year and the next few. Yes the umps are out of control. I’ve seen so many pitches way outside or inside called for strikes. I guess their just trying to speed up the game? I hate it. Might have to start using the computers to start calling balls and strikes. Smh

I fear they are expediting that process for digital strike/ball calls. There were two series in particular wherein Michael Kay and Cone discussed the pitches that were specifically called strikes only against the Yankees, outside the zone. Gleyber got kicked out in one of the games too, which is unusual. The umpire’s overall accuracy rating is 18%! Then they showed the digital box with balls that were inside the box and were being called balls. Chapman in one game had four or five in a row and almost blew the save because of it.

Clip, I see brutal calls against everyone. Not just the Yanks. That being acknowledged, fangraphs has shown no player gets worse calls than Judge. Wish he’d get pissed about it once or twice.

Like last time, when the shoulder becomes dislocated, he’s in intense pain, but once it goes back in, its almost immediately better.

This is how they feel things are now, that he should be back in a couple days.

Without surgery or physical therapy, he’s gonna pop that shoulder out at any given opportunity. Granted, I’m under the impression the official diagnosis is a subluxation of his shoulder and that I can speak from experience.

Look, a top 50 guy in A ball has the chance to be a top 10 guy by the time he’s MLB ready. But that’s multiple big hurdles SD was asking Wash to assume hed successfully make. The guy was drafted just last year

Yeah but this year it’s been his shoulder over and over again.

Those can take a long time to heal and if he keeps hurting it, eventually it will be more than a 10 day rest.

I would have rested him until June and focus on having him being healthy for the 2nd half.

When I said the Padres were being fast and loose with Tatis, people pointed out how wrong I was.

This doesn’t good on paper, if I was Tatis’ agent or parent I’d get multiple opinions and go with the most cautious one.

Even if I was with the team I’d point out that we have him signed for the next 13 years.

When Tatis partially dislocated his shoulder earlier this year, Padres fans heard from every Dodger fan about how horrible the injury was. Before McCourt told us that he would be out for 4 months minimum and that he would never be the same when he came back. Everyone can see how that prediction worked out.

I think the Padres will continue to listen to the advice of their doctors over random fans of opposing teams on the internet.

Funny how Tatis keeps hurting the same shoulder over and over and over again. Maybe he should listen to a Dr and get healthy. You think that’s going to help the Padres if he is out a few weeks. They are a 3rd place team with his in the lineup every day.

I mean, a separated shoulder that I didn’t rehab properly ended my baseball career. I went from throwing in the low 90s my freshman year in college, to being barely able to throw in the 70s by my junior year.

Shoulders are finicky due to the wear and tear they take. They need time to heal, with proper rehab and PT. Tatis rushed himself and he got hurt again. If he doesn’t rehab it properly, he will continue to get worse and worse shoulder injuries until he’s unable to use it anymore.

Mine went from a simple impingement, to a separated shoulder, to a torn rotator cuff, to then a torn labrum and my body just couldn’t take the injuries anymore.

Anyways. I dont think Turner is injury prone. I think Turner is accident prone. Finds unusual ways to get himself injured. End result is the same, he winds up on the injured list.

Try not to take what people tell you too seriously man. Let it go sometimes. Water off a ducks back type of stuff. You’ll be a lot happier. Also, idk what Turner being injured has to do with you laughing at Tatis Jr being injured. Not cool man.

@Faith in the Padres Many Padres fans (not necessarily you) call Turner injury prone in an attempt to justify the Myers trade and then when you point out that Tatis, despite being a professional baseball player a year less long and playing in his first actual professional game 2 years after Turner, has spent significantly more time on the DL/IL due to chronic, recurring injuries than Turner they go into hiding. Not unlike the people who say that Machado wouldn’t have signed unless the Padres signed Hosmer first.

HBP injuries that lead to small broken bones have a near zero likelihood to reoccur. They are random acts within the game. They happen, but randomly.

Claiming someone is injury prone is largely to suggest you think they’ll miss future games. Why would a HBP 5 years ago cause Turner to miss games in August 2021? Now a barking shoulder that’s been hurt 3x in 4 months..

Truly I hope this is another Tatis scare nothing more. Winning because someone else’s superstar got hurt isn’t nearly as fun. To me at least

Because that’s not being prone to injury when hit by a pitch. Prone to injury is when one sustains injuries more often than others when doing what others do routinely, without sustaining the same level/quantity of injuries.

HBP is an anomaly that is completely out of everyone’s control and cannot be measured consistently, for a variety of reasons, like making running plays, or running the bases can. For example, Stanton, minus any and all HBP, is injury prone.

Cody Bellinger had his shoulder surgically repaired this past offseason for the same reason. He’d dislocated his shoulder on multiple occasions, diving in the field at 1B. In fact, that was a reason he shifted to the outfield, to avoid the dive toward the baseline on batted balls.

Once it pops out, it’s apparently easier for it to happen again.

Dodgers just lost 6-5 with Jimmy Nelson on the mound in the 10th.

As a Dodgers fan, Trea Turner is great, but he is no Fernando Tatis, Jr. It is like calling Bryce Harper better than Mike Trout, not the case.

But Scherzer and Turner are enough to make the Dodgers the best team in MLB even without much of a bullpen. It is clear that Julio Urias will need to be the post-season closer again for a repeat championship.

It may not though. With shoulder injuries, once invasive surgery is conducted the shoulder rarely returns to 100%. Strengthening his muscles to simply stabilize his shoulder more naturally is far more preferable and effective, according to most doctors, trainers, and players. He’s going to need to have that shoulder taken care of this offseason, unless he wants to have four trips to the IL every year. They’ll likely only become more frequent as he ages. The game is more interesting with Tatis, deGrom, etc. healthy and playing.

Tatis is the opposite of a hot dog. If you think that, stop. There have been few like him in any human endeavor. All the top skills and passions somehow given to one person.

If he can think it, his body does it. Talent like we’ve never seen. He is very large, not like Ohtani but much bigger than you think. Those ligaments are severely tested. Fast, nimble, can somehow still throw 95 over to first even given his lifelong genetic ligamentous laxity. Very smart.

No else could change their swing in a day and go from great to greater, while just trying to keep a shoulder in its socket. He has exuberance for baseball like no other.

He isn’t stupidly reckless, he’s a kid. Huge loss the time one of these episodes is the last. So I’m taking it in while we can.

Unfortunately of the 3 injuries this year this one seem the most violent and sever of the 3. April he injured it striking out, June he dove and injured it but seemed to be fine walking off the field not favoring the shoulder. This one he slide and injures his shoulder and then jams it into the ground again and is seen holding his arm as he walks off the field.

Also every time you reinjure the shoulder you risk doing more damage to the anterior labrum that may make it more difficult to repair. If I were Tatis Jr. I would just get it fixed, he’s got a long career to go playoff hunt or not, And yes I am an Orthopedic Surgeon who has done a Sports Medicine Fellowship so this is what I do for a living.

There is no doubt that Fernando Tatis Jr. is one of the top generational talents right now, but he seems like he can never stay healthy. Tatis seems to always injuries his shoulder and from my understanding he had shoulder issues in the minor leagues. In a way it seems like the Padres might have prematurely give Tatis that long term deal since he can never stay healthy. Time will only tell if Tatis can learn with not putting his body at risk with making a slide like that in the near future but his injury can be very costly for the Padres right now since they are in a playoff race and put a lot on the line to be a contender this year.

Idk…looked like a hustle play and a good slide. Just not a preferred slide for someone nursing a shoulder injury. Being more conservative at that point in the game may have been a better approach but he’s young and gifted and won’t learn what his limits are unless he pushes the envelope once in a while.

The aggressive play is most successful when it is unexpected.

An anticipated aggressive play also may effect an opposing player who has to hurry or think past the play at hand…

Thing is, the Padres had two aggressive plays result in outs at the plate then this Tatis thing all within a span of 3 games.

The scouting reports are in. Maybe time for a different approach that causes upheaval. Deke-outs and false starts on a tag up to get hurried throws into dugouts might be a start. Get the extra base with lower risk.
