Rockies’ shortstop Trevor Story is “confused” after not being traded before today’s deadline, according to Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post. “I don’t have really anything good to say about the situation and how it unfolded,” Story says.
Story has been often mentioned as a logical trade candidate, given the fact that he’s a pending free agent on a non-competitive club. Even here at MLBTR, Steve Adams placed Story 7th on a list of top trade candidates just a few days ago, noting that it was unlikely the club would hang onto him, though admitting there was a slight chance of the club hanging onto the slugger and making him a qualifying offer at year’s end. That appears to have been the thinking in the Colorado front office.
“With what we were offered, we thought the (competitive balance) pick was better suited for us and we could have Trevor on our team for another two months,” general manager Bill Schmidt said. The White Sox, Rays and Blue Jays apparently made offers that didn’t match up to that draft pick, at least in the estimation of Schmidt and his team.
Perhaps the offer were somewhat dulled by Story’s subpar season. His wRC+ of 84 is well below his marks over the past three years, which all ranged between 117 and 128. But given that his strikeout and walk rates are in line with previous years and his BABIP is way down, some teams surely could have believed that regression was due. Regardless, Story will remain a Rockie for two more months, with his seeming frustration with management not boding well for their chances at re-signing him in free agency.
Jon Gray, another impending free agent, also remains a member of the club after the deadline. Saunders notes that Gray “wants to stay in Colorado” and the club has “begun preliminary talks about a new contract with him.” It will be interesting to see if such talks are able to come to fruition. Gray is having an excellent season, with his current 3.67 ERA tied for a career-best, especially impressive in the thin Colorado air. Normally, it might be tough to get a player to sign an extension when he’s so close to free agency and enjoying a solid platform year, although Gray has quite recently expressed interest in remaining in Colorado long term.
That desire comes despite the fact that the Rockies are at least 15 games behind each of the Giants, Dodgers and Padres. All three of those teams seem to have enough talent and resources to be well-positioned to continue playing at high levels into the future. With the already-struggling Rockies poised to lose a talent like Story, and perhaps Gray as well, it’s hard to envision them gaining so much ground on their competitors.
The Rockies front office is just confused.
Aren’t we all?
Regarding the Rockies…yes.
I’m right there with ya Trev
Well Trevor, the simple answer would be that the organization that employs you is incompetent.
Could be.
Or it could be that other FO’s saw how Story’s “superstar” former teammate is faring in St. Louis and how he’s helped that team get over the top.
Sorry, but when teams trade for impact hitters out of Coors Field and have them play their home games elsewhere…….well…..lots of data over the years…….
Arenado is currently hitting 4% better than his career average outside of Coors.
I don’t think any team is expecting them to put up their gaudy numbers once they leave Coors anyways. I don’t think teams are dumb enough to not believe in basic science.
The majority of the human race is “dumb enough” to believe in anything which contradicts basic science.
Science? Data? Facts? I remember those from the olden days.
Whatever problems the Cardinals have, Arenado isn’t one of them.
Yes, there is a lot of data over the years like Larry Walker, Matt Holliday, D.J. LeMaheiu, etc. They all continued to succeed after they left the Rockies.
Over the top at 52-51 and 9 games out of first. That is over the top? LOL
@Dodger JR. that’s the joke.
Small sample size, Sammy.
Or it could be that Story hasn’t been good this year. He’s on pace to be a slightly better than average player and he’s getting paid $17.5m for the year. Not a whole lot of value there, even if the Rockies picked up whatever is still left on it for the year.
That data would be that most players that leave Coors in their prime continue to rake.
Hey Trevor your poor attitude has made you worth less than a comp-A pick
whoever signs him will do better than the Mets with Lindor.
His .240 BA and plummeting power numbers helped make him not worth much in trade.
Not trading Story, Gray and Cron was a 100% commitment to QOing them if they don’t sign extensions.
I feel bad for Rockie fans+ Story. Now he’s stuck with a QO and won’t have a chance to prove he can hit outside of coors
Rockie fans, your FO is ridiculous
Didnt’t he get the chances to prove he can hit away from coors 81 games a season?
He’s hitting .219 away from Coors.
Faith –
Just please stop posting. You’re making a fool of yourself repeatedly
Kcj- there’s a mute button in case you are unaware. Feel free to use it instead of taking time to whine about my comments when you see them.
Once again. No
Hitting outside of coors when you play all your home games at coors is ridiculously hard. If a pitchers breaking ball breaks 10 inches at sea level, it could break half that in Colorado. Imagine hitting for 2 weeks where sliders only break 5 inches, then you come to LA and face an elite 15 inch breaking slider from Dustin May. Hitting is already hard enough, imagine not being able to know what a pitch will look like home vs road
By the time hitters adjust, they go back to Colorado. This is why it’s hard to pitch in Colorado as well. If you refuse to acknowledge this basic fact, which applies to any high altitude environment, you’re just being a troll
I’m sure they’ll lie to the public like the Twins Dynamic Duo… with the lie that they are ” retooling”… what a load of hog crap.. its called a rebuild.. and the reason they don’t say the word is because season ticket holders will not re-up.. you can fool some of the people some of the time.. Retool: Verb: adapt or alter (someone or something) to make them more useful or suitable.
Note there is nothing in retooling about replacing multiple moving parts in the device.. that is a rebuild..
So what’s the Story?
It translates to Trevor saying he wants the F out of Colorado.
Wishbone?
…
Sorry, I couldn’t help myself.
The one player whom everyone thought there was a 100% chance would get traded – and didn’t. Perhaps the front office forgot to set a reminder.
They thought the trade deadline was July 31st.
Schmidt is full of bull droppings
Bridich is gone, the “We’re a good team I swear!” delusion is alive and well. Rockies fans don’t deserve this but having a team run this poorly does keep things interesting.
What, we can’t get what we were offered back when he was playing well? Then we’ll keep him.
Trevor will be flipping his Milwaukee condo that he prepaid for
The Colorado Rockies are the most dysfunctional and poorly run franchise in MLB. Why is Trevor Story still surprised by that? It’s not breaking news. It’s just sad.
If Story REALLY wants to stick it to the Rockies he should accept the QO. For Schmidt it’s a foregone conclusion they’re getting that comp pick. If Story accepts he actually ends up getting overpaid for 2022, and the Rockies will be fresh out of excuses not to trade him a year from now.
Welcome to the club, Trevor. We had some jackets made.
Trevor Story is very average away from Coors Field, having a down year, injured earlier this year….teams not willing to give up a piece of pie for a dirty napkin. What’s so confusing?
Story suffered an elbow injury earlier this year. His current throwing velocity indicates the injury is still present which may also be impacting his hitting. In addition to that he no longer has any elite hitters (like Arenado) batting around him so pitchers can give him nothing good to hit.
A team with a deep lineup would give Story an environment to thrive regardless of the Coors Field effect. He’s an elite player and some team is going to really love having him from 2022 onward.
Definitely in the running for worst-run organization in the league. The future seemed so bright just a few years ago, to see where they’ve fallen is pretty sad. And with clueless incompetence like this, not looking like there’s any end in sight.
Also, it’s easy to see Schmidt is trying to angle to keep his job. He’s just regurgitating the same crap Monfort’s been saying the last two years. He doesn’t want a GM for a much needed rebuild, he wants one that will have the same delusions he does. Very sad.
It’s not even close. I’ve been feeling this way about the Rockies for the last decade. “I’m not even going to count last year….” What a crock of doo-doo. News flash: Every team had a difficult year last year.
Breaking the unwritten rules of front office management. Send your impending free agent stars to contenders as a courtesy
Get a decent prospect, but let’s not nitpick here over a comp pick
Story would have been a expensive rental in all likelihood , why give up solid value to have him walk in 60 games. .
Maybe if he were playing a little better they would have gotten better offers…
I agree with the GM honestly. I think the draft pick is worth more than what would have came in return. Still, I would have traded him for one top 30 team prospect anyway.
At the rate his season is going, he takes the QO
The Rockies have no front office to speak of, so there was no one to guide a fire sale. Could also be that the offers weren’t good as it was reported that the Rockies lowered the asking price to no avail. Draft pick compensation was apparently better than whatever was offered
Well now they have to extend QO’s to all their pending FA’s
the only problem is the qualifying offer is going to be over $19 million and out of all their impending free agents (Story, Gray, Owings, Cron and Chacin) the only ones worth that much are Story and Gray and if they both accept then their payroll will go up about $14 million and they’ll have the same bad team as this year and won’t be able to give them qualifying offers again and lose them for nothing after next year.
I think you offer Story the QO knowing he’ll probably turn it down. Gray, if you offer it expect him to accept so if they are not willing to pay it, don’t offer it. Let the rest walk
The Rockies crapped all over themselves this deadline. Plain and simple. That organization is far and away the worst in the MLB, and it’s not even close. THEY DIDN’T TRADE ANYBODY BESIDES GIVENS. How can their FO live with themselves after not trading any of Bard, Gray, Cron, Marquez, or Story!? I can honestly see their reasoning for not trading Story (despite me still believing that hanging onto him was utterly stupid) because he’s been down bad this season and the QO is still valuable. But how can you not trade ANY of the other aforementioned guys?!?! Stupid, stupid, stupid.
The Rockies are consistently in the top ten in home attendance annually. Monfort just wants to keep selling tickets and couldn’t care less about building a winning team or culture.
Plus he got his All Star game money as well.
Nailed it, @YBC.
Rockies ownership believes – & with good reason – that their fan base cheers for people as opposed to laundry. They are essentially the inverse of the Ray’s. & wildly more popular.
Sounds like Trevor’s relationship with the front office is rocky too.
Pete Crow Armstrong or Canairo is worth more than a comp pick. Have to think you could have got one of them. Just an incompetent organization.
Pete- Crow Armstrong landed Baez and Trevor Williams who has an additional year of arbitration. Both packages are more valuable than 2 months of an underperforming T. Story.
So that’s their Story and they’re sticking with him…
I know it’s hard to imagine right now…but Rockies/Rangers WILL happen one day.
At this rate I can definitely see it with the Rangers. Rockies… not so much
I didn’t say it would happen soon. It could be 2065 for all we know.
I think if the Rockies get a nice offer for Marquez they will definitely give the green light. Senzatela could draw interest from any playoff teams looking to add a back end starter. I wonder if Blackmon can also be traded for something. I’m not sure if they should sign Jon Gray to an extension as I think it could be risky. I think the team still has opportunities to acquire young talent and commit to a full rebuild.
Dude did you miss the fact that the trade deadline has passed?
~off-season plans~
I meant this upcoming off-season. Sorry for leaving that out.
If Story was hitting like he was in 2018 and 2019 this year, he probably would have been traded for a top prospect.
No bud black is pushing back against a rebuild
Because Bud Black knows the quickest way to unemployment is suffering through a rebuild. There is no legitimate reason for a full rebuild if for no other reason than the Rockies don’t exactly have a great farm system full of budding superstars to start with.
Rodgers can replace Story at SS next season. Elhuris Montero is hitting pretty well at AA, should finish the year at AAA and could make the jump to MLB next season to play 3B (Keep Rio Ruiz to play 3B in case Montero isn’t ready early). Keep Ryan McMahon at 2B and re-sign Cron to play 1B. If there is a DH in the NL next season put Blackmon there. Tapia is solid in LF but they may need to address CF/RF in trade or free agency as Sam Hilliard and Yonathan Daza are not everyday players. Garrett Hampson is good as a super utility player. Marquez/Senzatella/Freeland/Gomber and either offer Gray the QO, which he would probably accept or find another starter for the 5th spot.
Is Story really confuse why he wasn’t traded when considering that he suck this year.. Plain and simple the guy isn’t cutting the cheese, barely hitting his way out of paper bag for crying out loud is one reason Rockies couldn’t trade him because, he had no value once so ever, if he was hitting up a storm to where had value than, they would have trade him but he had no value so to speak.. No team out their is going to take rental guy who close to hitting on the mendoza line so to speak…
people bring up C.J. Cron that he should have been trade, why when teams can wait till free agency and get him to signed 1 yr worth 2 million or less, is flash in the pan type player..
If teams wait until the offseason to sign Cron they don’t get to use him for their hopeful playoff push. It’s not like he would have (or at least should have) cost them more than just an org filler in trade.
Are you CJ Cron?
Nope. Nice try tho
Well…are you CJ Cron’s mother?
What exactly is he confused about? His only response should have been: I love playing here, I love the guys here, and I am glad to be here to help us win a championship.
Yes, we are now in the day and age where everyone feels they can say whatever they want. He’s entitled to his opinion but the right move would be to focus on himself and the team.
Rockies were not prepared to be criticized after the Arenado fiasco, and teams were not offering much, but that was the price for not trade him before allstar game.
It will be interesting to know what teams offered what for Story. I’m guessing the Rockies thought they could make out like bandits thinking it was a seller’s market.
Everyone is blaming the front office (and they are incompetent, certainly), but we need to keep in mind that Trevor Story has had an awful season and teams have obviously taken notice.
I agree. Rockies are horribly run, but, ain’t no way Trevor Story as an 8 to 12 week rental is worth top notch prospects. Particularly not with the struggles he has had this season, and also especially considering that this has been a trade deadline with pitching fetching the best returns.
The fact the Rockies were reported to have “lowered” their asking price is telling. So, the Rockies asked too much and waited too long to shift ideas, by which point Story’s suitors had moved on. After that awful Arenado trade, the Colorado Rockies are well-behind the eight-ball now. Gray, too – trade him. Common sense.
The Rockies won the ‘WTF!!!!!!’ Award for sellers. I thought for sure Cron and Story were gone. Obviously they wanted a a premium for Story as a rental and no one bit. If you look at this trade deadline no one was getting more than one great prospect and one good prospect for a player. No one got 2 or 3 blue chippers with another 1 or 2 decent prospects. It sounds like the Rockies were trying to land a windfall and realized it wasn’t happening too late.
Your house is in foreclosure. I offer you $10000. You taking it?
If your house is in foreclosure, you don’t make that decision lol
Rockies ownership is a complete joke, I’m getting wilpon vibes
That is terrible thinking by the GM. Admittedly he has been a good draft guy who was quite successful in the draft but he is severely overeating a comp pick. Going by the fangraphs “board” a comp pick is on average a 40+ to 45 fv (20 to 80 scale) which is a decent prospect but even a low offer would have been at least twice that, if not more. The cubs for example got two prospects ranked a 50 and a 45 and story should have gotten at least that
The Cubs trade return is no great value. A potential no. 4 starter for one. Colorado can get that with a comp pick. Then a power bat with big contact issues. Those guys can be found in the draft. Heck, Colorado has a guy like that in Michael Toglia and he’s no sure thing.
So what “they can be found”?! The point is you would get 2 or 3 guys the same value as just 1 draft pick, and further along their development
It was terrible to hold Story unless they think Story will accept the QO and they can try again to trade him next year. The QO alone isn’t enough for someone like Story when you’re facing a long rebuild
This is not going to end well for either party. Colorado is going to give him the qualifying offer just to get the competitive balance pick and if he rejects it, he’s going to have a hard time landing a job somewhere else with Baez, Correa, Crawford all having better seasons and Corey Seager also in the free agency mix. Someone is going to be left without a seat when the music stops.
Story will still be in demand but he’s not going to make what he thinks he will. He’ll be ok though. Rockies get a comp pick and move on.
A more accurate headline would be “People Confused That MLB Team Still Exists In Colorado..”. My apologies to the strong fan base in Colorado, but the atmosphere simply isn’t conducive to MLB..
I think players need to understand what their value is to other teams. Agents tend to overstate it, that’s their job. They also need to have a feel for the exchange rate in a trade. I get the impression that Story was kind of oblivious to those factors and just expected to be moved no matter what.
It’s clear the FO held onto their price way too long. There were reports hours before the deadline they dropped their price. Nice job, the Mets+Dodgers had already gotten their middle infielders by then, not to mention teams who acted earlier like Milwaukee. They acted too late
Story wants to play meaningful baseball. This severely handicaps him achieving that in both 2020 and beyond. He would have loved to not have a QO. Can’t blame him
“I don’t have really anything good to say about the situation and how it unfolded,” Story says”
When I read that, I thought that’s a pretty petty and entitled statement. BUT…to be fair, maybe he’s frustrated from performing so well on a bad team, it just got to him.
Then I read this…
“Perhaps the offer were somewhat dulled by Story’s subpar season. His wRC+ of 84 ”
Dude, shut up. You are mad that your team couldn’t talk anyone into paying a high price for a flaming bag of dog…stuff?
My word, the pain here. Why would you give away Story and/or Gray for spare parts? You say you want to win and then get upset because Schmidt didn’t sell for fringe prospects, which is clear that what was being offered. You think anyone was giving the Rockies carte blanche to step aboard as pirates and rob them of their finest or better prospects?
After looking at the responses, we have come to the conclusion that Special Agent is Schmidt’s burner account.
then get upset because Schmidt didn’t sell for fringe prospects,
==========================================
This is the same BS excuse Tiger fans always gave for not having traded Boyd and Fulmer. Everyone else got traded, but no one wanted to offer the Tigers anything for their guys.
Prices this week are huge. Even worse is the fact that Story should been traded last year. The Nats read the tea leaves, knew they couldn’t compete, didn’t think they’d compete in 2022, didn’t think they could extend Turner.
So they razed the property. In two years, who do you think will be better: The Nats or the Rox?
I’m betting the Rockies Front Office and Ownership are confused on why they are not dead last in the MLB and that the Diamondbacks hold that honor. It appears to many of us fans that is what they want, come up with a team so bad that they come in dead last, some weird bet between Dick and Charlie Monfort if they can actually do it, and probably for $1.00. After today, they’ll probably move Trevor Story to First Base just like they moved Blackmon to a new position he’s totally incompetent playing.
I thought Desmond was their 1B. All they have to do is to offer him another 5-year contract.
Unfortunately, or fortunately depending on your take, we haven’t seen Mr. Ian Desmond in two seasons. Wish I could sit at home for 2 seasons and collect a cool $75 million. He’ll be FA at the end of this season, which will free up some salary space. Of course as long as they don’t give it to another club to take our starting rotation this off season.

I’d love to have heard that conversation.
GM: We finally signed Desmond.
Montfort: Great! Where are we going to play him?
GM: What do you mean?
Montfort: What position?
GM: Well, he is a SS, but we have Story coming up. He’s also able to play CF, but we have Blackmon. 2nd and 3rd are taken by DJLM and Arenado. Well, actually Mr. Montfort, Desmond isn’t a very good player, so we don’t have to really figure out where to play him.
Your value has depleted…no confusion outside of Colorado at all.
Rox were so good 3-4yrs ago. Then they dished out 2-3 multiyear reliever contracts and signed Desmond. What not to do everyone!
Trevor Story was selected with a comp pick which was awarded to them for losing Octavio Dotel. The Rockies may have liked their chances better to land an impact player in the draft with the comp pick Story will eventually net them himself over what was being offered. If they did, so be it. There’s no reason to trade just to trade.
Which remaining contenders really need Trevor Story? Why trade for him and move him or somebody else out of position? That weakens your defense. Story’s low production is why he wasn’t traded. He’s having a bad season and isn’t all that desirable at this point. He needs to shut up and work on his game, so that when he hits free agency, he has value. Confused? Look in the mirror.
Cron? There are dozens of 1B\DH out there, I wouldn’t want my favorite team to trade for him. I’d be more confused as to why the Rockies didn’t trade a couple of starters. Story, meh…
No one was willing to pay up to their asking price because you’ve fallen off a cliff from 6 to 7 WAR to 1.5 currently, probably end up around 2.6 again. If you’re not playing well and you have the Coors effect, why would GMs expect different away from there?
Yeah Story is a risk. He isn’t having a great season and I’m sure their asking price was too high.
18.5 million this year, I’m not sure his production equals his salary.
I assume the Arenado trade has organizations thinking they can just wait this out and get Story relatively cheap. Story’s value is only decreasing and the Rockies FO does not seem remotely competent. Of course, it now looks like he will just eventually leave as a free agent. Good job, once again, Rockies. Good luck with that draft pick.
Well, he may have successfully continued to narrow his FA options by his reaction as well. Certain teams will take his open criticism of their FO into account when looking at the SS on the market this offseason.
After looking at Story’s split stats in his career just now, I can see why a trade probably didn’t happen. Career homeruns for Story are 90 homeruns at Coors Field and 57 homeruns on the road. Not too surprising there, but batting average at Coors career is .302 and on the road it is .242. I was shocked at the huge difference there. OPS .971 and .747 on the road, Take him out of Coors field and he’s average or below average I’d say. I’m sure Colorado was likely asking for a pretty big haul for him.
Story got sidetracked. On the bright side, he may have expected his destination to be a lot rockier than this, but the solution is simple…trade for a moped and totally redeem yourself!
He didn’t get traded because the Rox didn’t want to admit how badly botched this operation was. They’ve been a bad team for three years. Which means they held onto their best trade chips three years too long. They got a negative $51M for Arenado, they are going to get a comp pick for Story, they will either get nothing for Gray, or panic and give Gray an ill-advised extension.
I’m not a Rox fan, but as a BB fan, I am offended. Somehow, Minny, Texas, Miami, Pitt, the Cubs the Nats, all managed to move players, And the Rox just sat on their hands.
The word confused is one of the most overused and misused words in the English language.
confused:
1. (of a person) unable to think clearly; bewildered.
2. showing bewilderment
3. not in possession of all one’s mental faculties, especially because of old age.
Is Story unable to think clearly? Is he not in possession of his mental faculties? Please. How about just say you were pissed you weren’t traded.
I was with you until your last sentence, then I got confused and now I need to go to the bathroom.
So your saying you do not know what bewildered means? It’s right there. #1& #2 buddy
It’s entirely possible Bill Schmidt is correct when he says no offer was made that exceeded a qualified offer compensation pick. Those are fairly valuable, essentially a late first round pick in what is expected to be a very good, very deep draft next year. Story isn’t hitting well this year and has been hurt — may still be in fact. Only two teams went and got an elite shortstop, and there were special circumstances in both cases (LAD and NYM). The market just wasn’t there and the offers were junk. Seems very likely.
Anything is possible, but half the league just got traded. It’s like asking too much for Ripken rookie, and then saying ‘well, I didn’t really want to sell him anyway” after everyone says not.
This is a disaster for them.
Kind of like the Sixers and Ben Simmons.
I get the logic but the MLB draft is by far the biggest crapshoot in all of sports.
They should have extended Story and avoided this whole mess but instead have now pissed him off by thinking they’re the smartest people in the room.
Rox gonna Rox
Holding onto Story and taking the pick might make sense if the Rockies hadn’t just gutted their scouting and analytics departments. I wouldn’t trust them with my lunch order right now, let alone a compensatory pick.
I think it’s pretty obvious analytics got them into this mess.
Confused? If you played better you would have been traded….
And that’s a good thing?
He and Arenado should both be locked up into their thirties with the Rockies yet Story will now likely be playing for a different team next season.
I don’t honestly understand how Rockies fans can watch their team do this over and over and still support them. At least the Marlins actually rebuild when they do it.
Perhaps he should be more concerned about his lackluster numbers with the bat?
I signed up entirely to comment on this story because wow.
The Rockies are so unbelievably delusional.
I can’t believe a team that was so good in the Holliday years has become this much of a laughingstock.
Not only did they sign Ian Desmond and yet then a few years later trade the younger and better Arenado, they think they can be anything without Story (their last recognizable player left). What exactly are they high on?
Every time they have a great player or an All-Star or one with name recognition league-wide, they trade him or let him walk. Holliday was in his prime, just like Tulo and Arenado and now Story. Cargo and now Turner are the only players they’ve kept past a certain age in the post Helton era. It’s beyond idiotic because they refuse to rebuild while trading away their core players. They just plug the hole with most likely an inferior player and keep treading water.
And they think they have a shot at the playoffs next year, in that division? Wow. Must be all that legal weed in Colorado or something.
Reportedly, the Rockies asked for Michael Kopech when the Sox called about Story. That’s a non-starter.
Yup. That’s why I make the Ben Simmons comparison.
The Sixers think a guy who can barely score in double figures despite dominating the ball all game long is worth anything close to what an actual superstar and future Hall of Famer like Harden netted Houston. They asked for Wiseman in addition to multiple first rounders and Wiggins and another player I’m forgetting. They demanded the moon from San Antonio and demanded two of Toronto’s foundational pieces in addition to picks. Every team laughed them out of the room in response. When they finally trade him, it’ll be for worse than whatever return they could’ve gotten had they not overvalued him so much.
The Rockies should have either traded or extended Story a long time ago but chose to keep putting off the decision because they think they’re smarter than everybody else.
They can’t be feeling too smart right about now. Once Turner became available, Story wasn’t gonna get anything close to whatever Turner got Washington. You snooze, you lose.
I would bet serious money that report isn’t accurate. Bennett Karoll, who put out that initial tweet, isn’t a reliable source for that information.
I’d trust the MarketWatch guy who said the Giants traded Joey Bart & LaMonte Wade Jr. for Bryant before I trust Bennett Karoll.
As Dante Hicks from Clerks would say…..I’m not even supposed to be here today.
Preller did the same thing with Jhoulys Chacin and Craig Stammen 4 years ago and it blew it in his face.
I’m not really quite sure why the GM thinks a compensation pick for Story is worth more than the potential ML ready, top prospects other teams were probably offering,
A guy who will be a high selection but have no idea if he’ll make it to the majors is a worth more than 2 or 3 guys who have proven to be good? I just don’t get it. Maybe he knows something I don’t, maybe that’s why he’s a GM and I’m just a guy on a computer. I don’t know
And cover the remainder of the contract because burning someone else’s money is cool… allocating the millions saved to a player deserving of an extension/buying out some years of free agency and arbitration is an idea for a rebuilding team… maybe invest in free agency? but I’m no GM
I’m guessing no one offered anything of value. His numbers are brutal this year. Why would a team take a chance like that on a rental?
What’s confusing about it? Story is playing like crud so no team wanted to take on the balance of his $17 million salary. DUH.
No he wouldn’t. We need to realize Dalbec is learning on the job at the MLB level. I have no doubt Cron will be on his 6th team in 6 seasons next year but i doubt it will be Boston
No market for middle infield, and the GM is too stubborn to realize that he’s also paying the remainder of the contract in addition to the measly compensation pick…. I am sure there was an offer out there that is better then the current scenario the Rockies are in
