Yankees Select Asher Wojciechowski, Outright Hoy Jun Park

By Anthony Franco | July 21, 2021 at 3:25pm CDT

July 21: The Yankees formally selected Wojciechowski’s contract today and opened a spot on the 40-man roster by outrighting infielder Hoy Jun Park off the 40-man roster.

Park, 25, received just one plate appearance with the Yankees during his initial call to the Majors. Yanks fans have been clamoring for him to get a look in the big leagues after he batted .325/.475/.541 in 206 Triple-A plate appearances this season, but it seems that in spite of that strong showing, Park won’t get much of a big league look — at least for the time being.

July 20: The Yankees are planning to select the contract of right-hander Asher Wojciechowski, manager Aaron Boone told reporters (including Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News). He’ll get the ball tomorrow evening against the Phillies. The Yankees have a vacancy on the 40-man roster, so no corresponding move will be necessary in that regard.

Wojciechowski has previously pitched in the big leagues for the Astros, Reds and Orioles. He’s tallied 198 innings at the highest level over parts of four seasons, working to a cumulative 5.95 ERA/4.67 SIERA. Wojciechowski throws a high number of strikes, but he misses bats at a slightly below-average level and is an extreme fly ball pitcher, which has led to some problems with the home run ball.

New York signed Wojciechowski to a minor league deal in January. The 32-year-old didn’t make his season debut with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre until late June after leaving a Spring Training outing with lat discomfort. He’s made four appearances since returning, none of which have lasted more than four innings, so he’s unlikely to work particularly deep into tomorrow’s start. Wojciechowski has a decent 4.29 ERA over parts of eight Triple-A campaigns.

The Yankees problems are over. Another brilliant move by Cashman & co.

Oftentimes, @Riddler, when you are out on the water unplanned situations arise. One is generally presented with the following options: head back, or figure something out on the fly.

Wojciechowski is an attempt to adapt to unforeseen circumstance. Nothing more. This actually isn’t a bad emergency pick up.

      I’m with Cash.
Figure it out as you go. The season is far from lost.

I know most (all?) of the Yankee fellas on the board want to give in & head back. I – however – am nowhere near that point.

I know Ducky, you’re right. I just really want to see then turn this around, they’re a hell of a lot better than 48-44 -at least on paper. The next 10 plus days will tell the tale I guess, keeping my fingers crossed & saying my prayers, Lol

          I get it.
This is an especially frustrating “style” of baseball to watch. & when this club struggles, if I wasn’t tying flies or painting decoys during the game, I’d be tempted to tear my eyes out.

          Mercy.

          Brutal stuff to witness.
But, I’d always prefer to have a chance. Make a couple adds. Stay close. With all the injuries this year, who knows what *any* team will look like in October.

I see why – in general – this is not the consensus take with the Yankee fellas on the board. We’re a flawed team & would be a huge underdog. But I’ll take a Wild Card 2 over starting hunting fulltime early.

I hear ya Duck, I know you’re big into hunting, good for you pal! The way I make it thru most games these days is with a few choice adult beverages & a BIG bag of M&’M’s Lol. Don’t know if you’ve read this article on pinstripealley but this is the kind of stuff that leaves me SMH & exasperated… and Cashman’s response is completely unacceptable. See in the Bronx pal.

That’s Cashman’s modus operandi answer. He’s never made an in-season managerial nor coaching change.

Really tired of bargain basement fill ins on a team that is supposed to not just compete but win late into Oct……..I like the younger guys they are bringing up but at some point, they need to decide what is the future…..the guys on the current roster, or subtly re-tool and add athletic, speed, players who don’t just lust over exit velocity and launch angle and pitchers who don’t rely on the 4 seam fastball up to get outs!

Nothing against Wojo but Deivi Garcia should be called up instead. Would be a nice opportunity to show case him before the deadline.

I get that Garcia is stinking it up in triple a but his line isn’t important – this team is lucky to finish at .500. Yanks need to fix him or flip him.

At this point it really it’s not about winning. The chances of either team making the playoffs are in the single digits.

You’ve got to start going through these young minor leaguers to see what you can use and what you need to unload.
