Astros Exploring Center Field, Bullpen Markets

By Anthony Franco | July 21, 2021 at 2:50pm CDT

The Astros are exploring the market for center field and bullpen help, reports Ken Rosenthal of the Athletic. Jon Heyman of MLB Network reported over the weekend that Houston was among the teams with interest in Marlins star Starling Marte.

In addition to Marte, Houston “checked in” on the availability of Pirates center fielder Bryan Reynolds, according to Rosenthal, but it doesn’t seem he’s a particularly attainable target. As Rosenthal wrote in a separate piece earlier this week, Pittsburgh prefers to build around Reynolds rather than trade him this summer. That’s hardly surprising, since the All-Star outfielder is controllable through the end of the 2025 season.

There’s an argument to be made the Astros needn’t explore the center field market at all. While the position looked like a question mark entering the season, Houston center fielders (Myles Straw and Chas McCormick) have played well. The Astros have a cumulative .269/.344/.361 slash line at the position, resulting in a 103 wRC+ that ranks tenth leaguewide. They’ve also both rated highly defensively.

Indeed, it’s possible the Astros would only look to the top of the center field market if they were to make an acquisition. Marte and Reynolds have been among the best performers at the position this year, and Houston could explore the possibility of making an impactful add while being content leaning on Straw/McCormick if no top players come available.

That’d generally align with comments made by general manager James Click earlier this month regarding the club’s payroll outlook. The Astros narrowly stayed below the $210MM luxury tax threshold over the offseason. Click suggested the organization was free to go above the threshold this summer but didn’t seem inclined to inch above the line to accommodate marginal upgrades.

There’s a case to be made no center fielder who might be made available in the next week and a half has the potential to move the needle for a team more so than Byron Buxton. Rosenthal wonders whether the Astros might look into acquiring the Twins’ star center fielder, although there’s no indication they’ve done so to this point.

Of course, it’s not even clear Buxton will become available. Rosenthal reported last week the Twins were making a renewed effort to broker a long-term extension with Buxton but might consider a midseason trade if the parties can’t get a deal done. However, LaVelle Neal III of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune writes that the chances of Buxton being dealt before July 30 are “remote.” Neal hears from Twins personnel who believed the sides were making progress on an extension during Spring Training before those talks broke down. (Jeff Passan of ESPN hears differently, writing that the gap in extension talks this spring “was far too big to bridge“).

Even if the Twins and Buxton don’t work out an extension in the next week, there’s no guarantee Minnesota would make him available in a trade. The Twins can keep him in Minneapolis through 2022 via arbitration, and the club has their sights set on contention next year. Buster Olney of ESPN reported over the weekend the Twins were generally disinclined to part with players under team control beyond this season.

Obviously, the center field situation remains in a state of flux, but the relief market should be more straightforward. There are a handful of productive relievers on non-contending teams, many of whom are affordable enough for Houston to stay below the luxury line if they’re so inclined. Cot’s Baseball Contracts estimates the Astros have a little more than $3MM in breathing room before hitting the threshold. Paul Fry and Cole Sulser (Orioles), Scott Barlow (Royals), José Cisnero and Gregory Soto (Tigers), Ian Kennedy (Rangers), Dylan Floro and Richard Bleier (Marlins), Ryan Tepera (Cubs), Richard Rodríguez and Chris Stratton (Pirates) and Daniel Bard (Rockies) are among the many quality relievers due less than that amount for the remainder of the season.

Royals just pulled Michael A. Taylor from the game with the Brewers. No apparent injury.

I was about to say…..makes no sense for Astros to acquire him. Straw has performed better and I think I’d play McCormick over Taylor.

Straw and Taylor have almost identical OPS, 670 vs 668. Taylor is probably better defensively.

In the MLB app as someone said, he has a left wrist injury. Was during the live play by play at bats and it said injury and that Michael A Taylor left the game with wrist injury. Before the injury I was thinking it was possible he COULD be a trade piece. I was also adjusting to the idea of trading Danny Duffy (as long as it was to the Brewers or Padres) But he went on the injury list again with a sore arm.

I can see the Twins making a killing on Buxton and Berrios if they make them available. With all the injuries out there and competition for playoffs still in contention, they can certainly take advantage of it if the right team and prospects come a knocking on their door.

You obviously haven’t been watching him play defense this year. He’s better than Cutch ever was in CF.

I HAVE been watching him play. However the title of the article was Astros exploring center field options. I doubt the Astros would make Reynolds their center fielder for the next 4 years just because he’s played a competent center field for 2 months. Not going to disagree about the Cutch statement, though.

And Reynolds is last in defensive runs saved in all of MLB playing center field. Choke on that

Marte doesn’t make much sense for them as his production this year isn’t much different than in-house options. Relief is needed for sure though.

I would take Cisneros, Rodriguez or Bleier in a heartbeat. Bleier is especially intriguing. He’s not a big strikeout guy but he has a great career WHIP and doesn’t walk anyone. That’s a huge issue with now the the Astros bullpen except for Pressly.

TWINKIES will be lucky if MLB doesn’t drop them to
AAA or AA next season !!
IF they remain at the MLB level,
the ONLY 2022 positions the team
    will be competing for is:
LAST PLACE IN THE AL CENTRAL
    &
    WORST RECORD IN MLB

Wow! Was that really called for? One bad season after winning two straight division titles and you think they should be relegated to the minor leagues? Far less injuries and better pitching next year and they’ll be on top again – count on it!

The last time the Astros went exploring in center field, it was to look for a good place to mount the camera.

I like Straw and McCormick for center field. Taylor Jones in outfield or such no. We need bullpen help. But who can go out of bullpen or what will be with rotation. Hearing things like Garcia going to bullpen and not sure on Javier coming out of bullpen. At least help for us for remainder of season. Wonder for next season will Verlander still be with us or want to go back to Detroit before retires. Will we have Yuli next year and even Correa.

But for CF for rest of year Straw and Chaz.

They already gave Yuli an extension for 2022, and they definitely don’t need to re-sign a 38-year old Verlander who has played one game since the 2019 World Series. Houston already let Springer walk last year in anticipation of Correa’s upcoming free agency, and they could also let Greinke walk unless he agrees to take a huge pay cut.

So dumb it’s funny. I think you’re getting your Houston franchises mixed up. Bill O’Brien is not the GM of the astros, and therefore will be making no such ridiculous deals.

I’ve been coming on here the past week or so to see if any trades have been made.

    Not yet.

The rumors being pushed here – and I assume elsewhere in the national media – make no sense at all. Lots of teams want, only a few veterans are being dangled. So we get media nonsense like this:

“Rosenthal wonders whether the Astros might look into acquiring the Twins’ star center fielder (Buxton), although there’s no indication they’ve done so to this point.”

This is not news. This is not even a hint of news to come. This is a media member trying to make the news (so what’s new?).

From what I’ve seen the Marlins seems to be putting out feelers on Starling Marte. Why not? He’s 32 years old and having the best overall year of his career. Why shouldn’t they explore selling the guy high?

Then there’s speculation as to what the Twins can get for Jose Berrios because he says he wants to go free agent after 2022. But we get this:

“The Twins……..(have) their sights set on contention next year.”

I see. So the Twins are going to trade Berrios and Buxton for prospects…..but they plan on contending in 2022.

    Clear as mud.

Most contenders want starting pitching, but no team seems to be dangling any.

All that’s left are who the Cubs sell off. And that’s very probably being exaggerated.
    –
I look for a few name players to be moved, and the return will hardly be top prospects. A bit of shuffling of lower tier players. Probably a surprise or two. But overall, the media is trying to make something out of nothing as they’re desperate for clicks.

Not really. Dickerson will split time in LF/DH against righties with Montoyo likely rotating Grichuck/Gurriel/Hernandez around and then have all three in the lineup against lefties. Still plenty of AB’s to go around
