Yankees Shopping Luke Voit

By Steve Adams | July 30, 2021 at 1:11pm CDT

1:11pm: NJ.com’s Brendan Kuty also hears the Yankees are shopping Voit, however he adds that they’ve yet to receive much interest.

July 30, 12:33pm: The Yankees are “looking to trade” Voit, MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand reports (Twitter link). Newly acquired Anthony Rizzo is slotting in at first base over him for the remainder of the season, and the Yankees can look to add a shortstop this winter, moving Gleyber Torres to second base and DJ LeMahieu to first base.

July 29: Luke Voit’s name has come up in trade discussions the Yankees are having with various teams, reports the YES Network’s Jack Curry (via Twitter). Voit is currently on the injured list with a bone bruise in his knee, but he’s nearing a return to the active roster.

It’s been an injury-marred season for 30-year-old Voit, who missed the first month-plus after undergoing surgery to repair a meniscus tear and then quickly landed back on the injured list with an oblique strain. This is his third IL stint of the year, and that trio of maladies has combined to limit him to 29 games and 122 plate appearances.

Voit got out to a slow start when he initially returned from knee surgery, but he was hitting quite well prior to his most recent knee troubles. In 17 games and 72 plate appearances from June 22 through July 11, Voit slashed at a .281/.361/.453 clip with a pair of homers, three doubles and a triple. That’s still a far cry from Voit’s powerhouse showing in 2020’s shortened slate of games. He appeared in 56 of the Yankees’ 60 contests last summer, hitting .277/.338/.610 and pacing all of Major League Baseball with 22 home runs.

When he’s at his best, Voit is a force to be reckoned with at the plate, but some of the Yankees’ recent dealings and rumored targets call his fit with the lineup into question. New York, for instance, has been repeatedly linked to Rockies shortstop Trevor Story in recent days. MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand tweeted not long ago, in fact, that the Yankees’ interest in adding Story is quite real. However, acquiring Story would likely necessitate sliding Gleyber Torres to second base, thus pushing DJ LeMahieu to first base, where Voit is traditionally stationed. The presence of Joey Gallo, Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton crowds the DH scene, and if New York’s reported interest in Kyle Schwarber manifests in a trade, that would only further muddy Voit’s role.

Voit is playing the 2021 season on a $4.7MM salary and will be due a raise in arbitration this winter. The lack of playing time and diminished production from his injuries will curb his earning power to an extent, but it’s fair to expect his salary to climb north of $6MM. He’s a Super Two player, so he’ll be eligible for arbitration in each of the next three offseasons before reaching free agency upon the conclusion of the 2024 campaign.

If it wants for his contract ,I believe Hosmer would fit in well in that stadium, plus slot of people tend to forget how well Hosmer plays 1st base, with the infielders the yanks got especially at Ss ,hosmer would save alot of errors and extra runs. On top of that he is a true Clubhouse leader which helps out as well as all of his playoff experience.

They just acquired Anthony Rizzo, with the Cubbies paying his entire salary. The notion that they’d add Hosmer and his bloated salary is absurd. They need a pitcher, not three first basemen.

It’s going to be hard to find a guy who can wear a jersey so fashionably. But, if he’s part of a deal for Story – or any trade that improves us – I’m all for it.

I can definitely see Voit being part of a trade this summer. Love the guy & how he has played for us. But I’ve seen a lot of my favorite Yankees leave over the years, starting with Micky Rivers.

idk why theyre so hyped to move Voit, he;s a good clubhouse guy and making DJLM a full time 1B would be a waste of his defensive value (which is important since his O has gone off a cliff this year).. if they need to move Gleyber off short, better to move him to a new team in the offseason and keep DJ at 2B

If we’ve learned anything this year about this Yankees, it’s that their analytics people refuse to let intangibles or traditional metrics disabuse them of their approach.

Hoy Park: tears up AAA pitching
Yankees: refuse to call him up and then trade him, believing that his skills couldn’t possibly translate to the bigs, and aren’t willing to let him try.

And if they squeak into the playoffs this year as a second wild card, they’ll pat themselves on the back and convince themselves that what they need is more of the same.

Are they tradable sure everyone is but maybe for them you would get a low level prospect or two. But dont get me wrong though if Frazier was In the right setting and got out of his own head I believe he would be a above average MlB pmayer for quite a few years.

    Here’s a trade idea:

Stanton and 50 million bucks plus Voit to the Padres. Hosmer back to Royals where Pads send 25 mill. Yanks send Andujar and one top 20 prospect and Padres send another prospect to the Royals. Royals send Yanks Benitendi.

The Yankees could eat Stanton’s entire contract and he’d still be stuck in NY owing to his no-trade clause and his desire to be in NY.

A couple other good teams made offers to the Marlins for him but he basically refused to be traded to anyone except NYY.

Stanton looks like he is asleep up there. Zero energy ;level…I cannot remember ever seeing a power guy of his magnitude swing at so many sliders 2 feet off the plate.. Then simply and calmly walk back to the dugout a if he is saying to himself….”no biggie, I’m making $185k per game anyway no matter what I am doing””!! You can see barely decent pitchers throw to him with no fear when he has 2 strikes on him……

This is all Cashman’s “potential” but injury prone players he has collected when healthy yes they are good I mean Luke, Judge, Stanton, Hicks, Severino, Kluber & Britton all guys that the back of their baseball cards screams I’m brittle yet Cashman has invested in them heavily that it has become such a detriment that he can’t mask the real reason anymore this team has underachieved and that is potential can only take you so far when you are healthy and these guys you never can count on them to remain healthy. With the exception of Judge whom gets hurt his share fair deal as well at least he has performed with great production can’t say the same for the rest.

As for why go after Rizzo he is a good clubhouse guy, good glove at 1B and contact hitter and is a ballplayer one that knows the game and when put in a situation to execute he does.

Cashman blew it last year had the chance at the winter meetings to get it done with Luke, Hicks and others but as always is as hard headed as a mule with his head up his asset.

Just was stated Rizzo & Bryant pulled from the lineup so could be either Rizzo to Boston or Yankees & Bryant to SD as rumored all along.

Remember what Glasnow angrily blamed when he hurt himself — that he couldn’t use what he was accustomed to using to grip the ball? But let’s point fingers at Cole like the Rays’ hypocritical announcers did today while conveniently forgetting about Glasnow.

The second best team in New York has given up more runs than they’ve scored. They insist on fielding a team of oversized lugs who constantly get injured and underperform. Joey Gallo has a BMI of 29.6, he is obese. Players with BMI over 25 are significantly more at health risk, that’s a simple medical fact. Why they think he’s going to make a difference on this mediocre team that has spent the entire season “turning it around” only to still be 5 games over .500 is beyond comprehension. They just don’t get it. Remember Mariano, Jeter, Bernie, etc. from their last decent team? Athletes, great athletes, with BMI all below 25. Healthy, productive, clutch. This team is none of those things.

          Really, they stink.

There you go again with the BMI stuff. It’s not an end all, be all for an athlete’s full physical composition. There are other components to take into context. It’s like using only batting average to judge a player.

Good chance Yanks’ll be in the postseason & Cleveland will be embarking on a rebuild. Have fun losing 100 games/year.
Meanwhile, we will still be fielding good teams.

The quest to identify injury risk factors in sports has been an ongoing and well-researched field in the world of sports medicine. Knowing some of these factors helps keep sports participation safe. Both intrinsic and extrinsic factors have been studied. Body mass index (BMI) is widely known to contribute to several medical conditions. Its association with some sports injuries has been established but the information is vast, with few studies that are randomized controlled trials. It is important to analyze these studies and confirm whether BMI is a predictor of lower-extremity injuries. Such knowledge allows for better effective treatment and prevention strategies.

You’re right, obese is BMI over 30. Over 25 is overweight. I misspoke. Thanks for the correction. I’ve been around and played multiple sports with Division 1 athletes as well as professionals into my sixties. Baseball, basketball, soccer, swimming, marathons, ultramarathons, friends from various branches of the military, to name a few. I know a thing or two about fitness. I only speak of what I know, you won’t hear me talk about hunting or dance or golf or knitting or organic chemistry or building and fixing stuff, the list goes on and on. I only know what I know. Fitness? Jazz? Mathematics? Pretty strong in those areas. Thanks for your input because I messed it up.

You think you’re an expert in the field of BMI calculation, but clearly you’re not. You omit the most basic factor — the ratio of muscle to fat.

Gallo is an elite athlete. If he were some couch potato standing 6′ 5″ and weighing 250, he’d be overweight. One need only look at the man to know that your characterization is nonsensical.

When Arnold Schwarzenegger won the Mr. Universe title in 1968, his BMI was 32.6. Arnold was obese?

Hopefully you know more about jazz and math.

I’m talking simply about an increased probability of injury. That’s the math part. Now let me go practice Au Privave, next up on the music stand.

Voit had a 143 OPS+ from 2018-2020, and is still only 30 with three more years of control. He’ll definitely help some team looking for a bat. He’d absolutely crush in Colorado, as one example. Problem is teams don’t value 1B’man with his skill set like they used to. The return will likely be underwhelming. If I’m in the Yankees boat here, and the MLB return being offered is not great, I might look to target some minor league lottery ticket types, particularly since they just moved some of their own prospect base in the Gallo and Rizzo deals..

I don’t think it’s a given that Voit gets traded. They still need a 1B next season if Rizzo walks which is highly likely. The main issue is Voit has nowhere to play this season and takes up a roster spot. Best case scenario is that they 60-day IL him with his bummed knee but he’s not hurt enough.

Here’s what they should do, but won’t. They mistakenly turned Stanton into a full-time DH, even though he was a solid RFer, believing that will keep him healthier. No. He became more injury prone when he became a full-time DH and sat around a half hour between ABs. Put Stanton back out in RF. Gallo in center. Judge in LF. Judge is a very good defensive OFer, so I’d put him in the tougher LF at Yankee Stadium and give Stanton the field where he’s more comfortable. Gardner can then be the late-inning defensive replacement. That opens up DH for Voit and an even stronger offense.

They won’t do this though out of fear, even though Stanton played 159 games for the Marlins in 2017 as a regular OFer, and then 158 games for the Yankees in 2018., split evenly between DH and OF. In fairness, ramping up from zero OF games to regular OF play would a challenge, but they created this situation. They have an opportunity to fix it.

…and it appears he wasn’t, unless they’re very slow in announcing. Maybe they’ll give the Stanton-in-the-OF idea a shot. If he gets injured, then they still have Voit’s bat at DH.
