Kyle Schwarber Drawing Trade Interest

By Steve Adams | July 29, 2021 at 2:05pm CDT

2:05pm: The Giants are also in the mix for Schwarber, tweets Sherman. He adds that the while the Yankees still have interest but at the moment appear to have their focus on other targets.

1:17pm: Despite being on the injured list with a hamstring strain, Nationals slugger Kyle Schwarber is generating trade interest and could be moved sometime today, tweets Joel Sherman of the New York Post. Sherman lists the Yankees, Red Sox and Blue Jays as possible trade partners for the Nats.

Schwarber, 28, was the hottest hitter on the planet prior to his injury. His overall .253/.340/.570 line was plenty solid in its own right, but the former No. 4 overall draft pick had gone an a legitimately historic tear to close out June, homering 16 times in 19 games. In his final 21 games before hitting the injured list, Schwarber posted an almost comically dominant .338/.409/.974 batting line over the life of 88 plate appearances.

The Cubs non-tendered Schwarber this past offseason, and he eventually latched on with the Nationals on a one-year, $10MM deal that now looks quite affordable. That deal comes with an $11MM mutual option, but mutual options are little more than accounting measures the vast majority of the time. Generally speaking, if team picks up their end of the option it’s because the player has played well enough to price himself out of that salary (as would be the case with Schwarber, based on his production to date). If the player picks up his end, it’s usually due to poor performance or injury, and the team then declines.

While Schwarber’s hamstring injury obviously hampers his trade value, he’s been running in the outfield recently and could return sometime in mid-August. With the elimination of August trade waivers, the Nationals are faced with the choice of trading him now or keeping him for the remainder of the year then losing him for nothing. They could, of course, make Schwarber a qualifying offer, but that’d nearly double his 2021 salary in the event that he accepted, which the Nationals may not prefer.

The Yankees have been connected to Schwarber for years, so it’s no surprise to see Sherman suggest them as a possibility. That said, with their recent acquisition of Joey Gallo, they’re something of a tough fit. The Yanks now have Gallo, Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton already on the roster. It’s possible they could just plug Schwarber into left field in the event that they’re comfortable committing to Gallo in center for the remainder of the year, however. It wouldn’t be an ideal defensive alignment, obviously, but that’d be a balanced and rather terrifying heart of the order for opposing pitchers to navigate.

The Jays and Red Sox present their own problems. Toronto already has a crowded outfield mix featuring Lourdes Gurriel Jr., George Springer, Teoscar Hernandez and Randal Grichuk. They were tied to Nelson Cruz earlier in the month however, and acquiring Cruz could be viewed in a similar lens. He’d give them an option at DH or in left field, pushing Grichuk into a fourth outfield role. Over in Boston, the Red Sox have Alex Verdugo, top prospect Jarren Duran and Hunter Renfroe in the outfield, with J.D. Martinez shoring things up at designated hitter. Schwarber has played all of three games at first base in the minors, for those who are wondering.

But are the Nats going to contend in ’22 or ’23? It’s far-fetched at best. They wouldn’t get anything close to a haul for Bell, but anything that can help bring in some young talent to that system is worth looking into.

They could easily contend in ’22. They still have a very good core, and could easily trade Scherzer before the deadline and re-sign him in the off-season. Either way, you’re still looking at a core of Strasburg, Corbin, Turner, and Soto with others like Kieboom and some other guys coming up. They aren’t doing a full rebuild by any means. Now, if they start trading Turner and those more core, longer term pieces, then it’s a different story.

In general, teams don’t generally go into full teardown mode anymore. They trade and build both for the now and the future. The Rays do this constantly as do the A’s. It’s a balance nowadays.

If I was in the major leagues I’d want to play first base. You get a lot of action because any ball hit to second, short or third comes to you for the putout. You have someone to talk to when a runner gets on first. And it’s a short walk to the dugout when the inning is over.

No, not in the least…..there have been lots of rumors circulating in the NY Press that Voit, last years Home Run champ will never have a higher value which is always what all Yankee haters complain about right…..holding on to long and selling when value is at its lowest…
Voit is a really good guy, but he’s only average at 1st and is beginning to be hurt more than he is healthy.
Beside, with the acquisition of Gallo, who can play first, why not be in on the Schwarbs who could slide in to left field and probably play as well as Andujar or Frazier if either ever comes back….probably not as well as Gardner but Gardy doesn’t scare anyone offensively any longer and Schwarber, who is dead pull, can aim at RF in his 4-5 at bats.

I thought it was a strange move at the time. He was bad last year–otherwise, ops+ over 100 each full year (99 one year, sorr). The Cubs made a handful of strange moves in the offseason, and the future looks bleak.

Hopefully all those suddenly entitled Cubs “fans” who called for his head last year realize they were wrong.

When have the Cubs ever got a mega haul from a trade? Cease and Eloy is a bad example. How about Darvish…NOT. Let’s see what they get for Kimbrel, Bryant, etc. We already seen them give-away 3 players already for distant prospects, at best.

    1985: Lost ALCS to Royals

    1989: Lost ALCS to Athletics

    1991: Lost ALCS to Twins

1992: Won ALCS over Athletics, won WS over Braves

1993: Won ALCS over White Sox, won WS over Phillies

2015: Won ALDS over Rangers, lost ALCS to Royals

It was fake for several reasons.

          1. The season was shortened by 102 games.

          2. Each team only played nine of the other 29 teams during the regular season.

          3. There were fake rules.

          4. There were no fans aside from the NLCS and WS in Arlington.

          5. The “postseason” was played at neutral sites.

          6. Over half of the league qualified for the “postseason.”

Washington rental sale. 2 days only. They can still compete in 2022. Turner Soto Bell is the start of a nice lineup. Will need to spend in free agency to bring in at least some 4 and 5 starters. But should they? Maybe Bell and turner should go.

Thats not entirely true. They have Strasburg, Corbin, Fedde, and Ross all signed for next season. With Cade Cavalli, Jackson Rutledge, Tim Cate, Joan Adon all should be ready to contribute next season. Plus the Nats will spend in free agency. This is not the dreadful post-Montreal days.

Im fully aware of what they have..

SS hasnt pitched in 2 years and has TOS.. Corbin has been almost the worst pitcher in baseball since the WS.. Ross is interesting.. Fedde is a 5 ERA guy…

Cate and Adon are nothings.. Counting on Cavalli next year is rich… he has to master his walk rate in AA first.. Rutledge has been hurt/awful this year in A ball.. isnt close.

I don’t have much faith in the Nationals. Lester was a poor signing. Imagine if instead they signed Anderson, DeSclafani, Wood, etc. Corbin iffy signing, but no championship without him. But Strasburg was awful, although I didn’t see it being this bad this soon. With those two contracts and having Soto it leans towards trying to contend. I don’t see as many bargains in free agency as last year but it’s possible to slap together a winner. A 200 million payroll solves a lot.

In my opinion they should offer him the QO. If he accepts, great. If not, the draft pick is probably worth more than what they would get in return for him in a trade. Too bad he got hurt that was the beginning of the end for this year’s Nats.

Doesn’t fit the jays because they already have 5 OF/DH guys but he does fit because he’s a lefty bat.

The jays seem to be interested in a lefty hitter despite their lineup being very solid.

Could see him going to the jays with a guy like Grichuk going the other way, other pieces may be involved and the jays may need to eat some of Grichuk’s salary.

    When is Schwarber expected back?

Speaking of Canada, the players from the Canucks, Oilers, Flames, Jets, Senators and Canadiens should play a round-robin in baseball to determine which city gets the next MLB franchise in Canada.

NOTE: If they were to play each other hockey, which is the sport they actually play, there would clearly be an advantage for certain cities. That’s why they have to play each other in baseball to determine which gets a baseball team.

Schwarber going to the Yankees make sense, or even to Tampa Bay but not the Red Sox.. I do like the idea of Boston trading for Scherzer. Can you imagine the next time the Red Sox have to play a double header with Scherzer and Sale taking the mound in each game? I find that thought to be very comforting.

Even if Bart was an option for rental players, Posey had to leave yesterday’s game after taking a ball the mask. Hopefully he’s fine.

If the Sox didn’t have J.D. at DH or superior fielders in Verdugo and Renfroe at the corners then maybe. Schwarber is not a First Baseman and for all of Dalbec’s offensive struggles he is solid defensively. I really wouldn’t want to have to close my eyes every time Devers has to throw across the diamond to Schwarber

The problem with any team that trades for Kyle Schwarber… is that they will probably be getting the real Kyle Schwarber down the stretch.

Career 117 ops+, 146 home runs in six years…I’d take it. Funny how hatred of a player (or his original team?) can blind you to common sense.

Not blind at all! He’s not a useless player. However, he’s incredibly streaky. Every year, his overall numbers look decent based on 3-4 weeks of a hot stretch, while the rest of awful. He’s already had his hot stretch, so good luck to the Red Sox!

@Bi Soxual yeah they should fire an entire top 5 front office lol. One that pieced together the team with the best record in baseball without overpaying…all while building a top 10 farm system. Good call.

“Schwarber has played all of three games at first base in the minors, for those who are wondering.”

You don’t know how to play 1st base. Scott…

    Scott Hatteberg : That’s right.

Billy Beane : It’s not that hard, Scott. Tell him Wash.

Ron Washington : It’s incredibly hard.
