The Cubs have selected the contract of right-hander Adrian Sampson from Triple-A Iowa and designated outfielder Johneshwy Fargas for assignment in a corresponding move, per a club announcement.
Sampson, 29, will be returning to the Majors for the first time since 2019. He’s spent parts of three seasons in the big leagues between the Mariners and Rangers but struggled to a 5.71 ERA in that time. He spent the 2020 season with the Korea Baseball Organization’s Lotte Giants and racked up 130 innings in their rotation, albeit with a lackluster 5.30 ERA in that time.
Sampson has been far from dominant in Iowa this year, but he’s carrying a 4.12 ERA over his past 10 starts — a span of 55 2/3 innings. That includes a seven-run meltdown on Aug. 7, but he’s been largely solid for the better part of two months outside of that hiccup. He’ll give the Cubs a fresh arm to start with Adbert Alzolay hitting the 10-day injured list due to a blister issue.
Fargas, 26, was claimed off waivers earlier in the summer and has gone 7-for-26 in his limited time with the team. He’s hitting .277/.292/.426 through 49 plate appearances this year between the Cubs and the Mets — the first big league action of his career. The longtime Giants minor leaguer is a career .255/.331./346 hitter in parts of eight minor league seasons, but he possesses well above-average speed — as evidenced by 248 minor league steals — and can play all three outfield spots. The Cubs will place him on outright or release waivers in the coming days.
Time to let the young kids play but we get a bunch of journeyman pitchers. Meisinger, Jewel, Sampson, I’m sure there will be more.
They must have a lot of deck chairs on this Titanic
Awesome comment….
Right. Because they should totally be trying to win the rest of the way…
And if the Cubs win today, your next comment will be about the blind squirrel finding an acorn. So hilarious! But hey, 8 upvotes – you’re a hit with the LCD.
“with Adbert Alzolay hitting the 10-day injured list due to a blister issue.”
This is not correct. His current injured list stint is because of a hamstring strain. He did have an issue with a blister that sent him to the IL, but that was a couple of months ago.
Is the scouting department paid by transaction?? Their like that guy in your fantasy baseball league that picks up every guy that gets promoted from AAA thinking they have the next Fernando Tatis….
Note to Sandy Alderson: bring back Farcas!
I expect David Ross to resign at the end of the season.
Why would he quit? He has no reason too.
Simple-David didn’t expect to go through this BS! He’ll go back to ESPN .
He knew this was a possibility though. It’s not a surprise they gutted his teamn. The only surprise was Anthony Rizzo being traded.
And not spending money in 2021, 2022 and 2023. They will throw some dollars around this off season but don’t expect players like Seager or other higher profile free agents. Think aging vets like McCutchen or Dickerson. Reclamation or bounce back starters. They will attempt to bridge the gap until the 2024 season.
BS! Ross knew exactly what they were planning & was full on-board with it! Job will now get easier for him with his “buddies” gone. Cubs had a plan before Theo left and both Jed & Ross are all-in to create their own legacies.
Man! This Cubs GM poster is almost as clueless as Andy McFail!
You know nothing.
We will soon find out who’s clueless in 8 weeks or so.
Fargas is quality, I’m confused why teams keep dropping him
Because he’s not quality. It is you who are mistaken in this, not every team in the MLB.
Oh no, not Jones highway:)
I like Fargas
Why even sign this Billy Hamilton light guy, if you do not give him a chance? Just my Cubs thought for the day!
Billy Hamilton can’t hit for beans. This guy shows a clue at the plate. I’d be interested to see the Mets bring him back for another look in case they catch lightning in a bottle.
He’ll be DFA’ed in 24 hours
These is one more example of how the short 2020 season’s poisons linger into 2021. Thanks both to innings limits, increased injury rates despite those limits, and the Saber metric vision that once through part of a lineup is more than enough for any pitcher, teams are so desperate for fresh arms that they will sacrifice productive hitters to get barely productive arms. I would bet everything in my wallet that Sampson will be DFAed in a week and that the churn of warm bodies will continue.
The Cubs are hardly the only team doing this.

Johneshwy Fargas sounds like a Tim and Eric character.
Like the reference great job
May the luck o’ the irish smile on ya
Why???
I understand he doesn’t hit homeruns but a homerun is only 1 run unless you have men on. Fargas is a table setter with a decent glove. Shouldn’t be dfa’d to begin with
Silly comment. Home runs are on average worth a lot more than one run.
He doesn’t get on base enough to be a table setter. Maybe the entire league is onto something here. He keeps getting released for good reason: he’s a 5th OFr
Mrs Fargas, I appreciate your love for your son, but he’s not good.
I’m gonna name my son Johneshwy Fargas
