Giants Activate Alex Wood, Designate Chadwick Tromp For Assignment

By TC Zencka | September 18, 2021 at 4:57pm CDT

The Giants have activated starter Alex Wood from the injured list, per MLB.com’s Maria I. Guardado. Sammy Long was optioned to Triple-A and Chadwick Tromp has been designated for assignment.

Wood should slide right back into the rotation for the final few weeks of the season while auditioning for a spot in the playoff rotation. The 30-year-old southpaw has put together a resurgent year for the NL West leaders, making 23 starts and logging 125 2/3 innings with a 4.08 ERA/3.71 FIP. Despite a couple of trips to the injured list, this is the healthiest Wood has been over a full season since 2018.

Tromp has been a regular member of the Giants’ catching rotation, though clearly behind Buster Posey, Curt Casali, and Joey Bart in the hierarchy. Still, the 26-year-old has made 82 plate appearances for the Giants over the past two seasons.

Long has both started and relieved this season, taking five turns in the rotation and appearing seven times in relief. He has a 5.53 ERA/4.22 FIP across 40 2/3 innings with relatively average peripherals across the board: 21.6 percent strikeout rate, 8.5 percent walk rate, and 39.2 percent groundball rate.

If they counted all of the missing roster spots, Tromp would have won the 40 man spot.

It’s the fault of all those mail-in roster spots being manipulated by Hugo Chavez and JFK Jr.

Agree on Hugo. Not sure why JFK Jr. is included. Was it his flying skills?

He plays some role in the QAnon conspiracy theories. Maybe not specifically the election-related conspiracy theories; there is too much lunacy for me to keep it all straight.

Hey, guys. I started a 20-team free fantasy football league for MLBTR commenters only. We still have 18 active owners but we ended up having 1 or 2 of the guys not be able to stay. We really need owners to take over their teams. The season just started last week so you aren’t missing much. Both teams are good teams as well. It’s no a situation where someone drafted starters who got injured or anything. They will be competitive teams. I also set it up so 16 teams make he playoffs which means as long as you try you are virtually certain to make it and have a real chance to win it all. The league is very active, too. there is a lot of chatting. If you would like to try out a 20-team fantasy football league with other MLBTR commenters and you you will keep up with your team all season email me and I will send you the invite. The sooner the better. My address is: theatlantabravesguy@gmail

The Giants can have Smith back and he will likely be good again. Not buying the Giants. Somethings up!

Leave Tromp alone! At least he’s not guilty of unplanned and premature withdrawal and cognitive decline. Hey man! That‘s not a joke!

Tromp was a good guy to have as depth this year. He has some good raw power, and someone will snatch him up.

But yeah, with Buster set to sign another contract, and Bart waiting in the wings, it was inevitable.

I think DFAing Tromp is a mistake; he will be picked up by another team. Hard to believe there wasn’t someone else from the 40-man to DFA. Guess I’ll have to check.

Tauchman is not on the 40-man.

Dickerson would make sense if Tromp could play the OF. But Tromp was the 4th catcher on the 40-man, and that means a lack flexibility that today’s game is all about.

A 26 year old backup catcher who has an OPS of .645 in AAA and isn’t an elite defender is pretty easily replaceable. I’d be surprised if he gets claimed by someone else, but I doubt they’re losing sleep over it.

Nobody is gonna pickup Tromp in September… unless somebody has some big time injuries

Defensively, Tromp’s biggest issue was his inability to stop the steal.
