Injury Notes: Paddack, Snell, Hill, Gallo

By Mark Polishuk | September 19, 2021 at 8:57am CDT

It “seems more likely than not” that Blake Snell and Chris Paddack won’t pitch again for the Padres in 2021, sources tell Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune.  With just two weeks left in the regular season, time is running out for either pitcher to return from the 10-day injured list.  Paddack was retroactively placed on the IL on September 12 due to right elbow inflammation, while a groin strain sidelined Snell on September 15.

Snell isn’t likely to pitch again unless San Diego is still playing into the postseason, while Paddack has some smaller chance of a quicker return, as he said his elbow felt fine after a game of catch yesterday.  Still, Paddack was only throwing lightly from a 75-foot distance, so it remains to be seen if he can progress quickly enough to get back on the mound before the regular season is over.  “Regardless of how [Paddack] is feeling the Padres almost certainly won’t even consider him pitching again in 2021 if they are not squarely in contention,” Acee writes, and that latter scenario is starting to look more remote.  The reeling Padres are 5-10 in September, and have dropped 2.5 games behind the Cardinals for the last NL wild card slot.

More updates on injury situations from around the game…

  • Tigers outfielder Derek Hill had to be helped off the field via a cart and a wheelchair after suffering a knee injury in yesterday’s 4-3 win over the Rays.  Hill was trying to beat out a bunt grounder to first base, and seemed to hyper-extend his knee while colliding with Tampa first baseman Ji-Man Choi.  While Hill was still being examined by team medical staff, Tigers manager A.J. Hinch told reporters (including Evan Petzold of The Detroit Free Press) that an IL trip seems pretty inevitable for the 25-year-old.  It seems as if Hill’s rookie season might well be over, after 49 games and 150 plate appearances that saw the 2014 first-round pick hit .259/.313/.388 with three home runs.  Injuries have been a big factor in Hill’s season, as he missed time in two separate IL stints due to a left ribcage contusion and a right shoulder sprain.
  • Joey Gallo left the Yankees’ 11-3 loss to the Indians yesterday due to neck tightness, and is day-to-day.  Gallo took one plate appearance before being replaced in left field prior to the start of the fourth inning.  Manager Aaron Boone told The Associated Press and other media that Gallo was receiving treatment on his neck before the game, and “I think after his first at-bat, it was just barking too much on him.”  While the injury seems pretty minor, the Yankees surely want one of their hottest bats back as quickly as possible to aid their pursuit of a wild card berth.  Gallo got off to a slow start after being acquired by the Yankees at the trade deadline, but has posted a 1.490 OPS and six home runs over his last 25 PA.

What a disappointment the Padres have been. Same with Gallo, he’s been beyond terrible as a Yankee.

Thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery.

Gallo’s poor performance is not a surprise, Yanks are better off going with Voit/Rizzo and let Stanton play OF.

Hey, guys. I started a 20-team free fantasy football league for MLBTR commenters only. We still have 18 active owners but we ended up having 1 or 2 of the guys not be able to stay. We really need owners to take over their teams. The season just started last week so you aren’t missing much. Both teams are good teams as well. It’s no a situation where someone drafted starters who got injured or anything. They will be competitive teams. I also set it up so 16 teams make he playoffs which means as long as you try you are virtually certain to make it and have a real chance to win it all. The league is very active, too. there is a lot of chatting. If you would like to try out a 20-team fantasy football league with other MLBTR commenters and you you will keep up with your team all season email me and I will send you the invite. The sooner the better. My address is: theatlantabravesguy@gmail

The Gallo hate is overstated. Here is his pace as a yankee over a 162 game season 95 runs, 42 HR, 70 RBI, 112 walks, .753 OPS

The low OBP is not good at all but the power combined with the defense makes him a positive to neutral in a lineup, not “beyond terrible”

Gallo has been amazing, the anti Yankee propaganda is unreal. He is exactly what the Yankees needed for years, a powerful lefty slugger with elite defense, an elite batting eye, and above average base running. i hope he is a Yankee forever.

The league average this year is .727

So .753 isn’t all star level but pretty far from laughable, beyond terrible or any other hyperbolic descriptor you want to come up with

The Padres were done a month ago. The issue is the pitching coach whom was fired, next is the hitting coach and then Tingler.

Oh…the riggers of a 162 game season. Last year was great for the fans. Everyone got to see at least something out of their teams. This is why it’s so hard to win out at the game’s highest level with a full 162. Injuries, fatigue, etc…last year will always be *

I think the hope was, adding Snell, and Darvi along with others would project that. They clearly didn’t get that production. Injury bugs plague teams. Every team has to grind through 162…depth is what’s helped the Giants this year with it along with timely hitting.

I told a Dodger fan once who was like ‘the 60 game championship counts it’s legit blah blah’ and I think it holds a little more weight than the 1919 and 2017 titles but I told him/her this. When their kid/grandkid asks about the 2020 title they need to explain it was a 60 game season, the world was in the middle of a pandemic, there were legitimately zero fans at these games and a bunch of good players sat the year out. Who even wants a title like that? After this year of being ‘defending champions’ I don’t think you’ll ever hear about the 2020 title again except at Kershaw’s HOF acceptance when it’s his only ring.

The laughable thing is you trying to sell it as not legit because we all know if it were the SF Giants first WS win in 50+ years since moving from NY you’d be sporting the championship gear 24 hours a day and calling it legit. Remember this by the Giants or any team accepting to participate in the 2020 season they agreed to a legitimate 2020 WS Champion, so like it or not that is the 2020 Los Angeles Dodgers.

That’s exactly why nobody respects the Dodgers 1/3 world series championship. There is no such thing as a winning culture in San Diego when it comes to sports. What they do have however, is incredibly attractive women and very nice weather. Half my family lives in SD, so I like to clown about losing and I also very much enjoy going down there to visit a few times a year.

You’re so full of it Ted it’s ridiculous. “Nobody”=Padre fans who can’t deal with reality. The only reason people thought the Padres were a juggernaut who could run with LA was that same 60 game season. How’s that working out? I guarantee you if the Padres, Rays or Braves won, their fans wouldn’t be calling it a fake title

Buck up that your overpriced, overhyped team sucks just as bad than any other year they didn’t spend 180M. Biggest game of the year and Fernando shows he can’t play center field. Not only does he drop a pop up, then he doesn’t even throw to the right base! We already know he can’t play SS. And only 13 more years and a shoulder surgery to go!

And now, deal with it. The team up the 5 won the title and the flag will fly forever. Maybe in another 40 years the Padres can experience actual winning. Maybe you’ll actually get to go to a playoff game one day! By that point, Fernando may be throwing out the first pitch not hitting lead off though…

Gallo is highly streaky, so you’re going to have to take the good with the bad. He’s gotten hot over the last 10 days and history says he probably would finish the season on a hot streak. An injury now would be bad timing.

Jbj never put up anywhere near the offensive numbers Gallo has posted. His hot streaks make him dangerous. JBJ’s just move him up from automatic out status, to major league hitter.

Oxford – Gallo has never impressed me as a hitter. He is Dave Kingman with a good glove. His occasional home runs and handful of walks does not compensate for his inability to make contact. He has hit his weight in only one partial season of his entire MLB career. Boras has built his client up with hand selected numbers in order to make him appear valuable. There is quite a few Joey Gallo type players out there that could have been just as useful to the Yankees. The timing of an injury, IMO, would be good to get him OUT of the line up and give somebody else a chance to help the Yankees in the wild card race. How long do you keep a 166 hitter in the line up? Average does matter. When a guy gets a hit 17% of the time, he sucks. (Yankee numbers)
If you could take any one player from the Yankees and bat him in every position of the line up for the entire game, would it be Gallo? I don’t think so! He isn’t that valuable and the trade has been a failure for the Yankees. They should have stayed away from a Boras built client. It would have been better for the Yankees if Gallo had been traded to Boston.

Jerry, you gleefully ignore that Gallo is also an elite defender and base runner. So of the 5 skills of baseball, he has 4 elite skills. That’s not bad. At all

With his “subpar” play he’s on pace for 42 bombs. Not unreasonable to think his OPS will climb once he gets out of the funk. But he is already hitting at a 40 HR pace, when you claim he sucks. What you ignore says a lot

I did mention he is a good glove. He may be a good base runner, but he has to be on base in order to use that particular skill. I would gleefully face his home run potential and amazing strikeout rate in every game of every year . Even 40 home runs isn’t enough to make him an elite player. He hasn’t been part of winning baseball in MLB and likely never will be. You can pull together whatever numbers you want so that you can call him elite, but the fact is he doesn’t help his team win and he certainly hasn’t done jack diddly-doo for the Yankees. Unreasonable to think he will improve once he gets out of his funk? He only has a couple of weeks to get out of that funk and it has been a long freakin’ funk. He has been in a funk his entire career. Yes, my opinion of him is that he sucks and can be easily ignored. An injury is the only thing that can salvage his pitiful season.

If they could just tank the rest of the season, the Padres could move up a few spots in the draft and on the waiver wire.

They could also put Tatis into surgery and give him a head start on his recovery.

The time for the team to turn around has passed, time to lick wounds and get out before there’s any more serious injuries.

Also time to start looking for new front office staff…

Nothing you can do about injuries. Maybe a new medical staff or new analytics philosophy if the current plan seems to be increasing injuries.

Anyone see Derek Hill’s injury? He was called out for “batter interference” even though the ball hit him in the back and Choi’s glove whacked Hill in the head. Are they claiming Hill ran too far to the left and forced the pitcher (Yarborough) to throw too far to the right? Hill’s left foot touched the baseline.

Umps should have let the play stand. I’m obviously a homer so someone please explain why calling him out was a clearly correct call.

What I did see on the play was that Hill was wearing his pant legs down over the back of his cleats. When his heel hit the bag first (due to the collision), it had no traction and is what caused the injury. If the coaches don’t require his socks to be visible in the future, this will happen again. Risking injury to be stylin’ is just ignorant. Guess Daz Cameron gets another opportunity to take his job.

Padres should play for draft position at this point.

It’s not just starters breaking down. Their pen has been decimated as well.

Theyre set to get back Clevinger, Morejon, Pomeranz, Strahm, Baez, Wingenter, possibly Castillo but doubtful, at some point in 2022.

They should look to add a #5 like Lester or Andrew Heaney for 2022.

Johnson, Stammen, Kela, Hudson are free agents. Paddack should shift to the pen. Bring back Velazquez as pen depth.

Cashman it’s time to move on for you. It’s a shame for the Padres they truly went all in this year. As for Preller, I do not understand why he didn’t just falsify Snell & Paddocks medical records. His stated position has been that fake meds make a player healthy.

Exactly. The Padres had two All Star middle infielders. So what does Preller do at the deadline? Acquire another one, genius! Before you know it the franchise player is learning the outfield and the Crone is moving positions too.

This is literally the same stuff since 2015, when he ran an entire outfield of new, out of position guys and expected it to work.

      Preller is junk.

MacKenzie Gore predictably has proven to be the most overhyped pitching prospect in recent memory. He can’t get a callup with where they are pitching wise. Shows how much they think of him.

BTW one of the classiest moves by one of the classiest players. Mookie Betts traded one of his bats for a Home Run hit by Freidl (his first of his career). Freidl is. Red player. Classy is, as classy does.

When the NL adopts the DH, they should exclusively play Tatis there. Help avoid injuries and he is far from an elite defender. He could easily hit 40-50 home runs a year.
