MLB To Require COVID Vaccinations For Non-Player Team Personnel To Gain Access To Field In Postseason

By Anthony Franco | September 17, 2021 at 8:09pm CDT

Major League Baseball will require non-player team personnel, including managers and coaching staff members, to be vaccinated against COVID-19 in order to gain access to the field and other restricted areas this postseason, reports Ken Rosenthal of the Athletic (Twitter links). Currently unvaccinated staff members must receive their first dose of the Moderna vaccine by October 4 — with an appointment for their second dose scheduled — in order to have field access, per Rosenthal.

Certain teams — the Nationals, Astros and Cubs reportedly among them — have already mandated vaccinations for full-time employees. (Jesse Dougherty of the Washington Post reported this morning that two former Nationals’ staffers are filing a complaint with the Equal Opportunity Employment Commission after being fired for failure to comply with the organization’s vaccination mandate). This is the first instance of a league-imposed vaccine requirement for team personnel to gain field access. MLB has previously relaxed health and safety protocols for teams that had vaccinated at least 85% of Tier 1 personnel over the course of the season in an effort to encourage widespread vaccination.

The league’s vaccination mandate does not directly impact players. Any potential player vaccination mandate, either on the part of MLB or specific teams, would need to be agreed upon with the MLB Players Association, perhaps as part of talks regarding the upcoming collective bargaining agreement.

The players should strike before the playoffs in support of the non-player personnel who don’t have any leverage.

Vaccinated can still catch and spread covid. Have similar if not higher viral loads. Only difference is they aren’t being tested like unvaccinated are. Testing is optional for vaccinated for whatever reason.

Right, vaccinated people have significantly milder symptoms but can still be carriers. Exactly the combination that is LEAST conducive to a mandate based on stopping the spread (supposedly).

Hey buddy want to check the vaccination status of the people filling the ICUs? Spoiler alert: the unvaccinated

The vaccinate very clearly massively reduces the risk of serious illness and death, which is the whole point.

Mathblaster, I know the point of the vaccine itself; that’s why I got vaccinated. I just don’t see the point of the mandate. How is an unvaccinated person more a threat to public health if they, like a vaccinated person, can be carriers and can be contagious?

Breakthrough cases are rare despite what you’ve probably heard in the media. Check the CDC stats, I think the last I read was around 1 in 5000 people,. Of course the variants are responsible for these cases, so the more covid spreads the more likely we get new variants and the less effective the vaccines become.
The real issue though is our healthcare infrastructure. Too many sick people in the hospitals taking up ICU beds and resources can bring healthcare to a halt. That’s when people with treatable conditions start dying when they could’ve been saved.

How would they know when testing is optional for vaccinated or they outright aren’t testing vaccinated people?

They’re testing unvaccinated. They’re not testing vaccinated.

So how do they know? Justin Pugh was vaccinated, infected with covid, had no clue cause nfl tests unvax daily and Vax every 2 weeks.

So. Not sure how any health agency can make any statement when youre not testing people equally.

They are testing vaccinated people. I’m vaccinated and I’ve been tested for covid 3 times since I was vaccinated last April due to possible exposure. You go to the doctor with any covid symptoms and they’ll test you right there. We have the delta variant to thank for this, otherwise there would be little to no breakthrough cases.

You literally just said you got tested 3 times in 150 days maybe 120. That’s not testing.

You could have had covid. No symptoms. Spread it and you’d have no clue Jon.

Covid is covid. They are not putting down covid when the covid test comes back negative. That’s just stupid conspiracy crap.
I can promise you one thing though, the flu will be back this fall.

Except the main test used to detect covid couldn’t differentiate between covid and flu. Why they no longer recommend using it Jon……over a year into the pandemic…….after they changed cycle testing over 9 months into the pandemic. Wonder how many false positives were flu cases.

That’s actually not true at all. The CDC now has tests that can detect both influenza and covid. I’ve never heard of one being mistaken for the other, they are two completely different viruses.

You know I’m not a fan of mandates personally and I wish it hadn’t come to a mandate here. But I am against misinformation being spread just because of a political agenda. Get the real facts, then make an educated decision. I don’t know why 50% of this country just decided that they shouldn’t take the advice of scientists and doctors and instead listen to the advice of media personalities and politicians. Maybe you should get your local elected official to perform your next colonoscopy for you?

Nope, that’s a lie. False positive flu cases did not happen, at least not at the scale large enough to cast doubt on the efficacy of the PCR tests.

What lying? Are you talking about a couple of politicians breaking covid protocols over the last year? Yeah that’s stupid but hardly something that should make anyone doubt medicine and science.

No one said stay inside and don’t get vitamin D or exercise, it’s a pandemic not a hurricane. People who stayed inside did so by their own choice.

Anyway we aren’t going to agree on anything, so you do you Padres fan. 🙂

This discussion has seriously dipped down to the level of being completely asinine. You have a backyard, porch, patio, deck? Guess what, you can go outside! You can even go jogging or go for a walk, just avoid crowds of people. Imagine that!
Please show me an article where state governments were forcing people to avoid the sunlight, which is exactly what you were claiming.
No they were telling people to not venture out to restaurants, bars, shopping, gyms, etc…

Many apartments don’t have porch, deck, patio, backyard.

In fact many apartment complexes closed off access to common areas cause covid.

People outside were harassed by police in many areas for being outside and not following “stay at home” orders.

If it’s just about reducing symptoms for the individual themselves, why is it mandated? Mandate makes sense if the vaccine reduces the spread. MLB doesn’t have mandates for other personal health choices, why this one? Why do they care if a non-player employee has a serious reaction to covid? Do they care if non-player employees do drugs and alcohol in their free time which suppresses their immune system? Would love to hear a thoughtful reason as to why a company would mandate an employee to get a vaccine, where the vaccine would only affect that individual’s own reaction if they contract the virus.

Really none of your business but I’m vaccinated and have had covid so theoretically my immunity is high. I feel the stance of everyone “needs to wear a mask and get vaccinated”
to protect those who have chosen not to is asinine. It’s their chose and I respect it and wish them nothing but the best.
My questions to those who cry that we must protect each other are, first why do you claim to care about people that you have never given a second thought about who’s health is their business and no one else’s? And second if it’s all about safety you and others, there are signs that say what the posted speed limit is a long every road for your safety and for the safety of other people around you, so if you ever exceed the speed limit that means you are recklessly risking the lives of yourself and everyone else out there. So if you speed and you complain that others need to get vaccinated and or wear a mask you’re a hypocrite

Maybe even smoke a cigarette in a fireworks store because “freedom”. Don’t impede on my civil liberties while I drive like a jack ass because it’s my car my choice.

People often forget about the liabilities any company can face if they choose to ignore proper safety measures especially covid. This is America after all where if someone gets sick at work and their employer failed to take any basic precautions, the employee would be happy to file a law suit (which would most likely be to receive a big payout in these messed up times).

Let’s not get vaccinated because you can still get the disease.

Let’s not get vaccinated because you can still spread the disease.

Let’s not get vaccinated because it doesn’t compote with your religion.

Let’s not get vaccinated because it denies our individual freedoms.

Let’s not get vaccinated because we don’t know how it will affect our bodies.

How about let’s get vaccinated because it saves lives?

Approaching 700,000 Americans dead because we don’t want to get vaccinated. Thanks America. Great.

I guess you are missing the part where many people here, including myself, are pro vaccine.
But the overarching point is I got the vaccine to protect myself. It’s your choice to get it or not get it. It’s all about mitigation of threat. I did the math and I came to the conclusion to get the vaccine. Every man and women can do the same for themselves.
It’s just like the BS mask mandates. I’ve been vaccinated since the first week of February. I’m not wearing a mask anymore unless I go into a private business and that is their rule. Why should I wear a mask because someone else has done the math and they choose not to get the vaccine?
It all comes back to Personal freedom. I don’t live in a communist country or Germany (time period of 1930s – 1945). Never give away your rights….you may not get them back.
But you do you it’s a free country and I respect that you have an opinion even if it differs from mine.

Note: I’m guessing if I take the name of the group out and replace it with time period they will let this post stand.

Vaccinate or not, it should be a personal choice. Anyone who makes their decision based on what any government entity or media outlet tells you is a fool. Truth and facts have been replaced with agendas and deception on both sides of the issue. And through all the noise, good people who have worked hard are now losing their jobs over what should be their personal choice. This is not American and it should scare everyone regardless of your ideology. Because while you might agree with forced mandates on this issue, you may not agree with the next issue that arises.

A scared population is controllable. That is their launch pad.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5-6

Please educate yourself on why our nation was founded. Maybe start with reading the Declaration of Independence. Here’s a link to it for your convenience:

In 1721, Benjamin Franklin and his brothers were critical of variolation, a technique used to inoculate a person against smallpox. Variolation differs from vaccination because during variolation, material was taken directly from an ill person’s smallpox pustule and inoculated into a small cut in a susceptible person.

When smallpox came to Philadelphia in 1736, infecting and eventually killing his son, Ben Franklin appeared to have a change of heart about smallpox inoculation when he wrote in his autobiography,

“In 1736 I lost one of my sons, a fine boy of four years old, by the smallpox taken in the common way. I long regretted bitterly and still regret that I had not given it to him by inoculation. This I mention for the sake of the parents who omit that operation, on the supposition that they should never forgive themselves if a child died under it; my example showing that the regret may be the same either way, and that, therefore, the safer should be chosen.”

In 1662, King Charles 2nd, gave freedom of worship to all except Quakers. Of them, he wrote, “We cannot be understood to direct or wish than any indulgence should be granted to those persons commonly called Quakers, whose principles being inconsistent with any kind of government. We have found it necessary by the advice of our parliament here to make a sharp law against them, and all are contented that you do alike”.

That same year, three ladies of the Friends came to Dover, N.H. and they received very harsh treatment there.

A following order was issued: “To Constables of several towns, you all are required to take these vagabond Quakers that are out of your jurisdiction, place them in a cart, drive them through your towns and whip them on the naked backs not exceeding 10 stripes each until they are out of this jurisdiction.” Dated December 22, 1662, Dover, N.H.

This harsh order was executed in many towns, however, religious zeal has never been silenced by persecution.

The Quaker preachers returned and renewed their religion. Their most violent persecutors became supporters of the Society of Friends. The first Quakers found refuge for a time at the home of Nicholas Shapleigh that was in the vicinity of Sturgeon Creek.

Quakers were persecuted for their religious beliefs
Quakers believed that each individual had an inner light. They held services in which members of the congregation spoke and participated in periods of silence. They advocated pacifism and refused to remove their hats in the presence of government officials.

Because of their beliefs, Quakers were persecuted and forbidden to worship freely. They thus became early advocates for the religious freedoms that were to be embedded in the First Amendment of the Constitution.

Quakers advocated for First Amendment religious freedom, other civil liberties

Quakers immigrated to the American colonies in part because of the persecution they faced in England. When they arrived in Massachusetts, they discovered that the Puritans, who controlled the colony, favored religious freedom for themselves while persecuting others.

Quakers eventually made their way to Rhode Island, where the government was sympathetic to religious toleration. When William Penn, a Quaker leader, founded the colony of Pennsylvania in 1682, under a grant from the king, the Quakers were able to establish a government built around the concept of freedom of religion. In 1701 Penn signed his Charter of Privileges, which gave all Pennsylvania residents certain basic rights, including freedom of worship.

The charter was the earliest prototype for the Bill of Rights.

Quaker beliefs later expanded into concern for civil liberties and civil rights beyond those guaranteed in the First Amendment. In 1673 they obtained passage of legislation protecting individual freedom of conscience in Rhode Island.

You say people are losing their jobs over the mandate right now as if they have no choice in the matter. They do in fact. Get the vaccine or get tested weekly. People choosing to be unemployed over this is rather sad. More belief that freedom of choice should also get freedom of consequence.

My father fought in WW2, Pacific Islands. Witnessed the massacre of the Philippines when the Japanese were defeated. Was a witness at the trail of the Japanese General who was executed as a result.

My mother’s father fought in the Civil War. Watched soldiers get their limbs cut off by a hand saw. Was at Chickamauga, and I ran a marathon there two months after 9/11 on the same day they found the remains of a former coworker and fellow runner.

I get my history from the stories of these men and others who lived through history. Not books.

@jon. I just resigned from my job of almost 2 years a month ago due to the company requiring EVERY employee to get both experimental vaccinations with no option for testing. Of course they said they would offer medical and religious exemptions but they didn’t offer enough time for any of that so I left. Half of the company weren’t vaccinated at the time of their announcement. I’d say roughly half of the guys in my area were NOT as well. These guys were probably split in their political beliefs but most agreed they didn’t want to put something unproven into their healthy bodies. Most got scared and caved when threatened with losing a decent paying job. I myself had to leave just based on finding it repulsive a employer would do that. The company already had been strict from the beginning temperature checks, random nasal swabs, and face masks. I haven’t had a sniffle this whole time and missed no work. A mandate was the end of the road for me. Most everyone I have talked too who have vaccinated agree it should be a personal choice, unlike some of the radicals that comment on here.

I made several comments about how I am pro vaccine. In fact my wife and got the vaccine when it was first available since we are first responders.
But I’m guessing I made the mistake (insert sarcasm) of saying we have freedom and liberty in this country.
People have the God given right to choose what they want to put in their body. We can have a intelligent spirited debate about our opinions and feelings without censorship.
I’m sure I will be canceled just like many others that post here. Comments that are offensive and or abusive should be removed, but having a difference of opinion does not fall into that category.
Just because someone wields the lever of power does not make them right.

While I do think that most people should get vaccinated… what does this accomplish? A vaccinated person can still contract and spread the disease. And for some reason they aren’t subject to testing in some places…. A much more effective approach is do daily testing to all personnel regardless of vaccination status.
