Yankees Place Luke Voit On Injured List

By Anthony Franco | September 30, 2021 at 4:46pm CDT

The Yankees announced that first baseman Luke Voit is landing back on the 10-day injured list with left knee inflammation. Reliever Albert Abreu is up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to take his active roster spot.

Voit has been plagued by injuries for much of this season, with the left knee particularly problematic. He began the year on the IL after tearing the meniscus in the area. That initial stint cost him the first five weeks of the year, and he missed three weeks between July and August due to recurring inflammation. (Voit also missed time in May and June because of an oblique strain).

The series of health issues limited Voit to 241 plate appearances in a regular season that has now officially been brought to a close. His .239/.328/.437 line still checks in around 12 percentage points above league average by measure of wRC+, but it’s a significant drop-off from Voit’s first few seasons in pinstripes. The slugger entered this season with a .279/.372/.543 mark in 892 plate appearances as a Yankee, including a .277/.338/.610 line with a league-best 22 home runs in last year’s shortened season.

It seems likely the persistent health troubles impacted Voit’s productivity even when he was well enough to take the field. New York acquired Anthony Rizzo from the Cubs at the trade deadline to help cover for Voit’s health question marks, but the front office will need to decide how comfortable they are in Voit’s ability to return to his prior form moving forward. Rizzo is slated to hit free agency this offseason, while Voit will be entering his second of four years of arbitration eligibility. Whether the Yankees are comfortable enough with Voit’s knee to allow Rizzo to sign elsewhere remains to be seen.

In the interim, the Yankees will continue to pencil Rizzo in at first base with Giancarlo Stanton serving as the primary designated hitter. New York enters play tonight one game up on the Red Sox for the top Wild Card spot in the American League, a game and a half clear of the Mariners (the closest team just outside the current playoff picture). The Yankees didn’t provide a timetable for Voit’s return, so it’s possible he makes it back at some point during a potential playoff run. To give him that opportunity, the club will need to lock down a postseason spot and win the Wild Card game without his contributions.

Did he fall off the bench and hurt himself after reaching for some sunflower seeds?

Tweaked running out a dropped third strike, despite the base already being occupied. Maybe even more embarrassing.

Voit fell in love with the Home Run this year based on last year……changed his entire approach of going opposite field and keep the line moving….
He’ll be dealt in the off-season.

This is where fully knowing the situation you’re in could’ve prevented an injury. Voit ran out a blocked 3rd strike even though 1st was occupied. That being said, if he hurt it simply running to 1st, he was bound to eventually

The only injury Voit has is bruised ego. He has been unhappy since Anthony Rizzo took over at 1st base.

And the funny/ironic thing is, if he wasn’t hurt so much this year, the Yankees most likely would’ve never traded for Rizzo. Voit’s inability to stay healthy this year forced Cashman’s hand, so Luke has really no basis for being as frustrated as he’s been.

We wait *until* Voit gets hurt before starting Stanton in left. Some of this stuff is really hard to understand, man.

Yankees will need a new first baseman next year. The Yankees won’t pay for Rizzo and Voit probably demands a trade. Maybe DJ plays first next year and get a SS. I wouldn’t mind Velasquez and Wade platoon at SS next year until Volpe is ready

Let me give you the answer. Boone has to find a spot in the lineup for his Pet, Brett Gardner.

I’m pretty sure Boone has no input into lineup decisions. He is supposedly given the “last say” for whatever that worth.

        Yeah for sure, @YBC.

But there have been times this September (well…all season actually) when we were desperate for offense. & – like @Joe pointed out – he was red hot for a stretch & couldn’t get into a game.

& *now* we run Stanton out there. It’s just kind of funny. Ya know?

Have to keep his bat in with our backs against the wall. I also don’t think the Rays will be running out their A-team for the final series so that might be a good thing.

And Ducky, Stanton playing the field actually HELPED his offense, as he confirmed. Stanton has been a monster on offense – keep him in the OF, rotate him out, and don’t worry about Voit’s feelings.

Yes, Voit did well last year, in a shortened season in which he called himself the “Home Run Champ,” but this season he hasn’t been productive with the exception of short stretches. Rizzo is a great defensive 1B, and their hitting is roughly the same – including the fact Rizzo is hitting well over .300 against LHP.

          I like Voit.

The man certainly knows how to rock a Yankee jersey. & – like Stanton – he always hits. When he is healthy, of course. Voit could also be a pretty serious weapon off the bench this fall.

          I don’t see Cash making a change at 1B.
Luke is inexpensive & generally productive. If he gets hurt again, adding a guy to play first is pretty easy to do at the deadline.

Also: did Guerrero’s touchdown dance spark the Yanks?

At least this is a legitimate reason to sit him. He gets AL player of the week and is rewarded for it by riding the pine.

Robertson’s stats for TB stinks, he’s got 2 blown saves in 11 games, 1.36 whip and 4.91 era. Can’t blame Cash for leaving Whitlock unprotected after TJ surgery. @Mr.Ducky, I like Voit too but he’s D is not very good and he gets too excited when he hits w/RISP and tends to swing at bad pitches so they should trade him and resign Rizzo.

        • Ducky Buckin Fent

If I had my druthers, I’d prefer Rizzo too, @Gruber.

But the Yanks have very real needs at short & in center. The rotation could probably use an upgrade as well. So, I think Cashman kicks the can down the road with Voit & 1B in general. I also think that’s entirety defensible.

Let’s make it two in a row tomorrow.
          Big start for Nestor.

Doubt that TB will start B team vs Yanks, not enough players like years past. Maybe Allen in CF in ‘22 and keep Gio at SS? This is prob Gardy’s final season. Yanks don’t need Warren, he’s not on the 40, rather have Ridings but he’s out for season. Velazquez hits better from the left side than right, Wade is left handed so how do you platoon them?

        • YankeesBleacherCreature

The Rays should just rest guys as they’ve already clinched playoffs homefield. Hicks is still around so I doubt he doesn’t play CF. As for Gio at SS, I don’t feel like he’s a plus defender there. If that’s the plan, I’d rather give Gleyber one more year of redemption. Of course, the better plan is to sign one of big SS FAs.

        • Ducky Buckin Fent

I appreciate how you are trying to work with what we have, @Gruber.

But my preferred solution would be to just simply sign Baez & Marte. I know, I know…typical, heavy handed, “just throw money at the problems”, Yankee fan take. But – to me – that would be patching the noticeable leaks & preserving this core group of players.

          Now.
That depends on how you see this group. I am not as down on them as a number of Yankee fans are. I do see their point too. Perhaps a shakeup is in order.

        • Ducky Buckin Fent

These clubs have some tangible animosity between them, @YBC. Aside from resting some of his bullpen guys (& pitchers in general) I think Cash & the Ray’s are going to give us hell. Like always.

Game 1 is a pretty big deal tonight.
I really want to see the Yanks avoid all the mayhem that is the WC2 race. Could be tie breaker games, all kinds of madness.

Hoping we get the WC1 so that this season will at least show a nice little profit for Hal. Sweet money in a home playoff game. The sweetest.
          Ahem.

        • gruber63

Baez Ks a ton and hardly ever walks, this year alone he has a whopping 182 K’s and only 28 BB. I like Semien but prob Jays will resign him after breakout year. We have Peraza who is suppose to be best IF in the Yankees system and Volpe has high baseball IQ according to scouts. I would want a short term solution at SS until Peraza or Volpe are ready. Next year the Yanks payroll is at $137,586,000 for 10 players, a whopping 16 players going into arbitration (Judge, Sanchez, Voit, Torres, Urshela…etc) including Nelson who’s a non-tender candidate and 2 are FA (Kluber & Luetge). NY has 7 in-house options at SP. I do understand why you guys want Baez so much but I rather have Correa, Seager LHB or Semien if NY signs a SS.

Forgot about Hicksy at CF, Allen or Florial will be 4th, 5th option in OF.
