Angels Release Kean Wong, Outright Hector Yan

By Steve Adams | November 24, 2021 at 12:30pm CDT

The Angels have released infielder Kean Wong and sent lefty Hector Yan outright to Triple-A Salt Lake after he cleared waivers, per a team announcement. Both were designated for assignment within the past week.

Wong, the younger brother of Brewers second baseman Kolten Wong, was a fourth-round pick by the Rays back in 2013 but has yet to find his footing in the big leagues. The 26-year-old has seen MLB times both with Tampa Bay and the Halos but managed only a .167/.188/.218 output in an admittedly small sample of 84 plate appearances. He’s had more success in Triple-A, where he’s a career .293/.355/.421 hitter in more than 1600 Triple-A plate appearances. Wong also still has a pair of minor league option years remaining.

Yan, 22, spent the 2021 season with the Angels’ Class-A Advanced affiliate and pitched 82 1/3 innings with an unsightly 5.25 ERA with a 24.7% strikeout rate and a 15.2% walk rate. Yan ranked eight among Angels farmhands at Baseball America in the 2020-21 offseason, drawing praise for his deceptive delivery, a fastball that can reach 98 mph and a trio of offspeed pitches that need refinement but all have the potential to be average or better. After going unclaimed on waivers, he can head to the minors to continue working on improving his command and/or improving his secondary pitches.

i feel like a lot of the time when pitchers that arent that advanced get selected to 40 man rosters, they just run out of options too quickly and eventually end up being outrighted. would said pitchers actually have been R5ed?

Is WONG an option for the White Sox?

Definitely an option if offensive production is not expected.

Milwaukee should sign Kean Wong then try to trade him and his brother to atlanta for kyle wright..atlanta would naturally decline the trade because 2 wongs don’t make a wright

The Angels have a bunch of these players they can release and should They can’t hit and they don’t play defense well enough to be considered utility players.

Right now the flavor of the day is Wade. If he shows he is like the others, cut him too.

Use the 40 man roster for players that have a chance to help you.

They would have said that about Fletcher and Goose. These are great pieces to be hte 25th and 26th man. Also, you gotta fill the minors.

Hey, you can be taught even if you’re forcefully arguing against it while getting there!

Unfortunately, as I was expressing in the other thread, it’s too late now. Already carried them past the RuleV date, and didn’t protect anyone when had the chance because of the hording of them

And also as explained, the team is obsessed with the type and will likely carry a bunch on the final roster. If they were willing to merely cut them all, they would have when it could’ve benefited, afterall

My point was I don’t know Wade from Adam. He wasn’t brought in here to be a utility player who is unplayable at 6 positions.

My disagreement with you is about the other guys. They suck.

If you are saying Wade stinks, ok. I’m saying no one the Angels have fits the bill. They can’t hit and are unplayable at several positions.

Maybe Wade can fit the ball, the others have removed all doubt. They can’t.

Aside from the fact that he can’t hit, there’s a lot to like about Wong.

That’s sad. Now we’re officially down to just 9 IF/OF utility bench guys on the 40 man roster

I thought we left 40 prospects unprotected from the Rule V because we needed all the Wong types though? Don’t quite understand sending them away for nothing now when the spots could have been much better used just a few days ago

Phillies should take a stab at Wong. The farm system is mostly trash, need to go for some reclamation projects.

Always surprises me when you can’t flip a Wong type for a 19 year old long shot who throws 90+ but can’t find the plate. At least you get something with a upside and a slim chance of panning out.

He received plenty of chances to demonstrate his defense at multiple positions. It failed! He sucked in the outfield everywhere they put him.

Yep. So are all the other Angels’s multi-position players.

The Angels know they don’t have a multi positional player who is playable, that’s why they acquired Ward.

Ward may be unplayable as well, but the others are without question unplayable.

They may have too many of those type on the 40 but I think you are too absolute about the future of those players. It is normal to need some more time to learn a new position. They did look awkward at times but had the ability that showed when they made good plays. Wong even made that nice play in right leaping over the right field wall.
Also, I think you meant Wade not Ward.
