Pedro Feliciano Passes Away

By Anthony Franco | November 8, 2021 at 5:30pm CDT

Former major league reliever Pedro Feliciano passed away last night, according to Eduardo Pérez of ESPN. He was 45 years old. The Mets, with whom Feliciano spent his entire major league career, released the following statement:

“The Mets are so saddened to hear of the loss to their family today. Pedro Feliciano will be remembered as a beloved member of the Mets organization for his impact as a great teammate as well as his reputation as one of the most competitive, durable and reliable relievers during his time in Queens. Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Feliciano family. Rest in peace, Pedro.”

Feliciano appeared in parts of nine big league seasons from 2002-13. He led the major leagues in pitching appearances each season between 2008-10, serving as a situational option who was particularly effective against same-handed hitters. Over 383 2/3 career innings, he pitched to a 3.33 ERA, including four separate seasons of sub-3.40 ball. Feliciano also spent time in the Dodgers, Reds, Yankees and Cardinals organizations and pitched for a season in Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball.

MLBTR joins countless others around the game in sending our condolences to Feliciano’s family, friends and loved ones.

So sad to hear this. He was a workhorse and good at what he did. Twitter had that he was jet-skiing with his family the day before he passed. So young. Glad he could live life to the fullest right before. You don’t know when your time is up. I wonder if any other pitcher ever retired having pitched 100 less innings than appearances? The ultimate situational pitcher.

For a few years he was as tough as any reliever out there, and though he got used as a LOOGY (Left-handed One Out GuY) I always had the sense that he could be pretty tough on righties as well. RIP Pedro and condolences to his family.

I loved to watch him pitch. So reliable. Had a no-nonsense approach. They just called him in time after time and he usually got the job done. There aren’t many like him around anymore

Just googled it. He died in his sleep and that’s all the details that were released. Glad he passed peacefully, albeit way too soon.

A good, dependable reliever during a time when good dependable Met relief pitchers were few and far between.

Sad to hear the news. RIP

caught this via TCDB first. I was still fairly young when he was at his best, but I cant forget the name or the consistency it represented. RIP Pedro.

RIP Perpetual Pedro who was a very overused but effective Mets LOOGY until the Yankees signed him and his arm fell off. Brian Cashman wasn’t amused but Mets were paid back with Dellin Betances. LOL

45 YO former pro athlete and unclear circumstances around his death. Hope it’s not something even more sad. Too young, RIP

Well he died in his sleep, he had a small hole in the exterior of his heart, he was diagnosed with a rare genetic condition called left ventricular noncompaction caused by the failure of myocardial development from birth, and he wore a heart monitor while pitching in 2013 spring training.

I don’t think his actions had anything to do with his death.
