The Marlins have already made one big outfield acquisition this winter, signing Avisail Garcia to a four-year, $53MM deal before the lockout began, but recent rumors have indicated they are still looking to add another. One name on their list is Michael Conforto, as Joe Frisaro of Man on Second Baseball reports that “the Marlins have had discussions with Conforto’s camp, and he remains a possibility.” (Presumably, these discussions took place before the lockout, as teams and players are now not permitted to have such talks until the lockout ends.)
Conforto would make for an interesting fit in the Marlins outfield, given that he and Garcia were both primarily right fielders in 2021. However, it is worth noting that general manager Kim Ng recently said the team believes Garcia could be an everyday center fielder, if needed. Conforto also has some center field experience, but not since 2019. Even then, it was only 39 games. The club still lacks a proper everyday option in center and has been connected to both Ketel and Starling Marte this winter to try to address that need. It seems that installing Conforto in right field and sliding Garcia to center is another route they’ve considered.
Conforto is one of the more difficult markets to predict, due to the fact that he had a tremendous four-year run from 2017 to 2020 but is coming off an ill-timed downturn in 2021 as he entered free agency. During that stretch from 2017 to 2020, he hit 97 home runs and slashed .265/.369/.495, for a wRC+ of 133. But 2021 saw his numbers slip to .232/.344/.384 for a wRC+ of just 106. That’s still above league average, but a significant drop from his previous seasons.
After receiving a qualifying offer from the Mets, MLBTR predicted that Conforto would turn it down and then find his multi-year offers to be lacking, eventually settling for a one-year, $20MM deal to prove his 2021 slump was an outlier, then return to the open market without a qualifying offer attached. Although Conforto did end up turning down the QO, Frisaro spoke to Tim Healey of Newsday, who believes Conforto will beat that $20MM prediction and wind up somewhere in the range of $80MM to $100MM. (Same link as first paragraph.)
If that proves to be correct, the Marlins would have to blow past their recent track record for free agent expenditures in order to get a deal done. The $53MM given to Garcia was the largest contract given out by the club in the four-plus years since the team was purchased by Bruce Sherman and Derek Jeter. Since then, they also gave Sandy Alcantara an extension worth $56MM. It would certainly come as a surprise if they then added another big contract to the books, especially one with a guarantee almost equal to those two combined. However, the organization has reportedly been planning to increase spending as they emerge from their rebuilding effort, meaning recent history perhaps can’t be used to eliminate the possibility of future spending.
Despite all the young talent they’ve collected on their roster during the rebuild, taking the next step towards competing won’t be easy, considering they share a division with the defending World Series champions in Atlanta, a strong Phillies team that likely still has moves to make, and a Mets team that has already spent at unprecedented levels to try and turn themselves into a true powerhouse. Perhaps the Marlins view a Conforto pursuit as the type of bold move they need to consider in order to gain ground on their rivals. For similar reasons, they’ve also been connected to other outfielders who remain available, such as Nick Castellanos, Eddie Rosario and Kyle Schwarber.

Prediction- Alcantara will start fielding Cy Young votes this season and finish top 5 in voting
The Baseball Fan
I second that
dsett75
That’s not an extreme reach though. In fact, if Sanchez pitches like he did last time he was healthy, that’ll be a helluva 1-2. The Marlins def have pitching. I wonder who they’ll trade??

Wonder what the structure of a Conforto contract would look like.

3 years 24mil or 1 year 10mil from the Marlins, everyone else will probably pass if he’s seeking anything greater than 10 mil a year.
seamaholic 2
Ha. You wish. Unfortunately, teams will look beyond his league average 2021 and see the all-star level guy from previous seasons, one of the best pure hitters in baseball, and only 28. He’ll get $18-20m AAV no problem. I’d guess 3-4 years.
VonPurpleHayes
20m AAV for Conforto is way too much in my opinion.
Cosmo2
He’s definitely getting more than 10 million a year for one year. He turned down almost twice that when he turned down the QO. He and Boras aren’t that dumb, he’s getting paid.
CNichols
I see this going one of either two ways. Either he takes a 1 year deal for just over the QO amount (like 1Y/$20M) or he takes a multi-year deal with a lower AAV (like 4Y/$60M).
They probably want $20M per year on the multi-year, like 5Y/$100M, but after 2021 if he wants that high of an AAV then he probably needs to take a pillow contract for 1 year and rebuild value then go back on the market next year.
Ma4170
I see it exactly like you do… I think he takes a one year higher AAV deal, has a bounce back season, and gets his $100M+ next year
Cosmo2
Yea I could see that, one year, just above the QO
stymeedone
Who is going to give up a pick and the corresponding dollars in signing money, in order to sign him for only one year?

Angels just did it with another former Met in Syndergaard. I could see someone doing it.

Why would he take 3 @ $24 or 1 @ $10 after turning the $18.4 QO.
Inside Out
Discussion was hey are you willing to take a cheap deal? No. Okay, bye.
marlins17
I like it. Could get lucky and get him for 3/54 and he’s still only 31/32 and gets another free agency shot, or go all in on like a 6/100 type deal if you believe in him enough.
deweybelongsinthehall
He’s not worth giving up a draft pick for. My guess is he ends up back in NY on a one year deal, looks to rebuild his value and tried again next year with no restrictions. Truth is outside of NY, I don’t see anyone paying him $18+m for even one year. The Mets did him a favor in my book by setting the bar so to speak
Richard Alicea
Agree, don’t see anyone giving anything close to a one year deal less than 10mil.
marlins17
Why do you think that out of curiosity? Feel the same way about Trevor Story? (Who i actually trust much less than Conforto)
Ma4170
Some people on here are so clueless… aside from his down year last year, he was a top 15 MLB OF by almost every measure from 2017-20… smh
deweybelongsinthehall
Forget 2019 due to the juiced ball and 2020 due to it being a short “season”. Clueless? look in the mirror. There are better options for the bucks he’s trying to get. Never mind the additional cost (draft pick).
Sinhalo75
He’s definitely not coming back to the Mets. Thankfully they’ve moved on. His numbers are about as inconsequential as they come. He doesn’t move the needle.
meckert
If he’s returning to NY it’s more likely with the Yankees than the Mets. He’d easily hit 35+ home runs hitting in that bandbox.
VonPurpleHayes
The ship has sailed with the Mets. He’s already been replaced.
deweybelongsinthehall
I just don’t see a team giving the bucks he wants and the compensation when there likely will be a DH and additional bat every day. Cano is the obvious DH choice but given his age who knows what to expect from him?
Cosmo2
They’ve Cano, Smith, Davis… yea, don’t see Conforto fitting

First why would you give up a 1st for a 1 year deal? I can understand if it is a superstar that struggled and wants the afore mentioned prove it deal. This makes some sense especially if the player would give the team a chance to match the deal.
Is there any truth to the rumors that Jeter hired ARoid to be his chief medical officer? A rumor circulating around someplace maybe. We could start it here would be worth getting his arrogant behind from the announcer booth.

I’m prepared for Conforto to be the next in a line of guys who got sucked in by Boras’ promises of a big payday, only to take a deal less than the QO or be forced to wait into June to sign.
Boras is great at getting obvious slam dunk free agents paid, the guys in the middle, I would think twice.
Cosmo2
Yea wasn’t Stephen Drew a Boras guy?
Flyby
he was and he had to take a prorated less than QO or right at the QO deal if i remember right after the draft.
deweybelongsinthehall
When you represent so many, there has to be winners and losers. I don’t understand the system as when certain players are represented by the same agency, there has to be a conflict. Players must give up rights to agents in the fine print. I had a legal situation once where one law firm represents multiple kids in a building with lead paint. A case went to trial and the verdict exhausted most of the insurance. Only after did the firm realize if they pressed for every dollar, they risked there would be nothing left for others whose cases were to go to trial last. Not the same situation but very similar. The firm gets a great overall fee but the players divide a pot with some doing better than others.

Oh Michael, why kill your career in that ballpark?
I think he fits much nicer in the Brewers outfield, but doubt they cough up the dollars. That shifts over to the Angels where they also have a need.

Great call… I see brewers or Phillies as his prime landing spots, and he’ll do very well in either place

Miami & Conforto ,, Miami isn’t spending 20+ mil on a player

Not a player like Conforto anyways
stymeedone
They shouldn’t have to if they are looking at Conforto.
mike156
One of the bigger problems Conforto might have is the draft pick. No one will want to give him i high-value one year contract and the pick. But longer means a lower AAV. and Boras will want an opt-out, probably after both the 1st and second year, because Boras wants the ability to cash in while retaining the guarantee.
Sinhalo75
Unlike Wheeler & Murphy honestly idgaf if he goes to a division rival. He might put up numbers but they’re pretty meaningless. This guy does not play like a 1st round 10th overall pick. Not an impact player. Not big time. Good riddance.
meckert
Not yet anyway. He’s shown flashes but so far he’s not the perennial All Star people expected him to be. In fairness he was rushed to the majors and almost immediately placed in the spotlight.
averagejoe15
He’s actually played far better than the average 10th overall draft pick.
Why are Mets fans so quick to quit on a 3-4 WAR player? That’s the exact kind of guy you want to supplement your stars with.
meckert
Interesting. Conforto had a somewhat checkered career in NY and it would be intriguing to see if he could blossom playing under less scrutiny.
dsett75
I like these articles. Especially when I learn something new. Like the other day, when I learned that my Tigers actually offered Correa 10/275. I hadn’t known & am glad he said no, apparently. Chances are that if a team was interested and/or making offers before the shutdown, they’re gunna be interested after it, too. They’re just gunna be in more of a hurry is all.
Flyby
As much as i would hate to see this happen, for some reason i see conforto being a brave next year with duvall being moved around between 3 of positions and 1b to give rest to others with a rotating dh for them. They have a mix of young talent and veterans that they would not be hurt too much by the draft pick hit and conforto would give them another bat in case Freeman goes elsewhere (hard to see but hey pujols went to the angels so not impossible).
MLB Top 100 Commenter
Four years and 53 million just like Avisail Garcia. No opt out if you are surrendering a pick.
Otherwise, a competitive team offers him one year and 18 million with a team option for a second year.
Not many teams will surrender a pick for a one year deal for a corner outfielder.
MLB Top 100 Commenter
I would like to see the Marlins sign Roman Quinn to a minor league deal. Quinn is one of those guys who always seems to get injured, but when healthy his defense and wheels play in any outfield spot, whether as a backup or as an injury replacement.
Habeto
As soon as I knew Quinn was available, I said exactly the same. A minor league contract with invitation to ST and a good base salary if he makes the team should do it.
Roman Quinn hasn’t got enough chances and I think he has the potential to be a classic leadoff batter.
Cosmo2
He just doesn’t get on base enough and I highly doubt he ever will. He’s a 4th OFr at best.
Habeto
He has never had a season with more than 50 games played or 143 PAs (2018). His career difference between Batting Average and OBP is .078. The main problem is his SO rate.
Maybe you are right about he profiles better as a 4th OF, but if the Marlins do not get a true CF and don’t feel confiable with Brian Miller, a platoon Quinn/De La Cruz won’t be particularly terrible.
MLB Top 100 Commenter
I agree he is a 4th or 5th outfielder. But with options like Garcia, Sanchez, De La Cruz, Brian Anderson and Garrett Cooper, Quinn would be a very good and very cheap back up and late inning/injury replacement. Well suited for the fish.
Backup Catcher to the Backup Catcher
Conforo should have taken the QO and used 2022 to bolster his market value. Now, a one year deal for that amount tied to a lost draft pick is prohibitive for 90% of MLB teams.
However, doubt his ego, an ego no doubt fueled by Scott Boras, will allow him to sign for anything less than three years and $45 million. However, I think that number and length of contract is the best he’s gonna get because there are other FA outfielders who are just as good, or almost as good, who could be had for less money and without that draft pick impingement.
Joospife
I see Conforto with a similar contract that the Cubs gave Marcus Stroman, 3 years and around 70 million and an option to exit the contract after his second season.
Metsin777
If anyone wants a guy who hits homeruns when their team is either winning or losing by 10 runs and never comes up with runners in scoring position then take Conforto. He has the most misleading stats out of any mlb player I’v ever seen. Mid way through the season, the umpires felt bad that he wasn’t doing well and kept calling balls while he was up which were no wear near the strike zone. Thats the only reason his obp doesn’t look as bad as it should
Cosmo2
None of this post is even remotely true
Rsox
This is a situation where the Marlins would definitely benefit from the DH coming to the NL. Signing Conforto and pushing Avisail Garcia to CF will be a quick way to regret Garcia’s contract. The fact that he played CF in Milwaukee in ’20 was out of pure necessity after Lorenzo Cain opted out during the season. A 6’4 250lb Center Fielder is a huge defensive liability and injury risk waiting to happen.
Conforto has nearly 150 games in CF at the MLB level and would probably be the better fit for Marlins Park. I still don’t understand why the Marlins continue to target corner Outfielders when the need is CF
Flyby
Here is the reason why. Outside of Kris Bryant (cant see them breaking the bank) and brett gardner (maybe jeter can entice him) is there anyone you really see as a regular starter in CF. Maybe pillar might be an option but i have a feeling there will be a mini bidding war for him.
Albert Almora (28)
Kris Bryant (30)
Delino DeShields (29)
Jarrod Dyson (37)
Brett Gardner (38)
Billy Hamilton (31)
Odubel Herrera (30)
Travis Jankowski (31)
Tim Locastro (29)
Jake Marisnick (31)
Joc Pederson (30)
Kevin Pillar (33)
Danny Santana (31)
Magneuris Sierra (26)
Rsox
I understand the lack of CF options but square peg round hole doesn’t work either.
There is a need across Baseball for CF help it would seem. The trade market is probably the best place to look for help but it all comes down to who is selling and what they are asking for.
Cedric Mullins
Jackie Bradley Jr. (I’m not convinced the Sox really want him)
Harrison Bader
Lorenzo Cain
Kevin Kiermaier
All could be available in trade. Randall Grichuck or one of the Astros Center Fielder’s could also be available depending what the Marlins are willing to offer
MLB Top 100 Commenter
Rsox
The Marlins would have to give up too much for Mullins.
The dirty birds probably want to keep Bader.
JBJ seemingly can’t hit 0.200 any more.
Cain is getting old to be an everyday CF and Brewers have enough pieces to rest him often.
Only Kiermaier looks like an interesting fit for Marlins, at least if Rays will pay part of his salary. But you would think it was already discussed when fish acquired Wendle.
Rsox
Manny Margot from the Rays could be another possibility.
The Marlins have corner Outfielders and starting pitching depth to make a deal if they want to. You are correct as most of those players may cost more than they are willing to pay or may not be what they want at all.
Maybe they could look to someone like Victor Robles in Washington. Lane Thomas seems to have passed him on the depth chart and a change of scenery may do him good. The Nats could definitely use a Left Fielder and/or a Major League ready Starter, which the Marlins have plenty of both
Cosmo2
Bryant is NOT a CFr. I know that wasn’t really your point but it just drives me crazy that just because a manager occasionally sticks a player at a position fans start thinking the player can start there. Any team counting on Bryant as their starting CFr would quickly regret it.
to4
But Garcia is a more challenging OF’er !
MarlinsFanBase
Please no….just no.
The only upside to this will be watching Mets fans who once said that vvery Met OF (Nimmo, Smith and Conforto) was better than every Marlins OF (including Marte), and we’ll now see them pointing out how Marte is the best Mets OF and that all three of their OFs are better than all three of the Marlins OFs (which may include Conforto). That would be the comedic benefit.
But as I said…no. Let some other team get suckered into giving this guy anything over $12 million and losing a draft pick for him.
