Mets Announce Full Coaching Staff

By Mark Polishuk | January 21, 2022 at 10:58pm CDT

The Mets have officially announced their 2022 coaching staff, with pitching coach Jeremy Hefner as the only returning member of the last year’s coaching corps.  Many of the new hires had already been reported in recent weeks, with hitting coach Eric Chavez, first base coach Wayne Kirby, third base coach Joey Cora, and bench coach Glenn Sherlock all joining forces on Buck Showalter’s staff for the veteran manager’s first year in the Mets dugout.

Joining this group are two other coaches, one a newcomer to the Mets organization and the other a familiar face.  Jeremy Barnes will become the assistant hitting coach, receiving a promotion from his previous role as New York’s director of player initiatives.  Craig Bjornson will act as bullpen coach, coming to Queens after most recently working three seasons as the Red Sox bullpen coach.

Phillies fans may remember Barnes as a member of the Philadelphia farm system from 2009-12, after Barnes was selected in the 11th round of the 2009 draft.  Barnes then moved on to play the next three seasons in independent baseball and in the Australian Baseball League, remaining in Australia for two more years to work for ACT Baseball after his playing career was over.  From there, Barnes returned to North America and spent four years working in the Astros’ farm system as a hitting coach and as a minor league hitting coordinator.

Bjornson also has ties to the Astros, working as Houston’s bullpen coach in five of six seasons from 2012-17.  Before his time with the Red Sox and Astros, Bjornson spent 13 seasons as a minor league pitching coach with four different organizations.

With Showalter’s staff now complete, the group represents an interesting mix of old-school experience and newer-school approaches.  Bjornson, Kirby, Cora, and Sherlock are all seasoned big league coaches, while this will be Barnes’ first time on a Major League staff and Chavez’s first coaching gig of any kind.  Even Hefner is still relatively new to the coaching world, as the 35-year-old has been the Mets’ pitching coach for the last two seasons and a Twins assistant pitching coach in 2019.

It’s nice that the Mets have brought in some new faces to let them experience a mediocre and disappointing season too.

I understand you are one of the haters, but first we need the MLB and MLBPA to agree to even have a season, mediocre or otherwise. Afterwards, the most important coaches/personnel are the trainers/strength & conditioning coaches since it’s been rare for them to be relatively healthy. A healthy rotation could make them a very formidable team.

I do think staff is a bit overrated in the current era of baseball. Let’s be real, no one is coaching deGrom, Scherzer, Alonso and Lindor…etc. They’re doing whatever they want. If the Mets players stay healthy and play to their potential, then they’re an absolute contender. That’s what it boils down to.

LMFAO. None will end up playing in Queens. Kershaw is about done. Wouldn’t be surprised if he needs TJS and ends up retiring. If some team is dumb enough to sign KB for a long term contract they will regret it.

Your Mets will come in 3rd place just ahead of the Nats and Phillies. Marlins will surprise. Hell even Fangraphs and ZiPS thinks the Braves are still the best team in the NLE – if they sign Freemen or get Olson, it’s over for the Mets. You guys can sign FAs till kingdom come, you will always fail because your organization is cursed and still run by criminal buffoons.

I think the prediction will be incorrect, but it is not laughable.

I certainly predict Braves, Mets, Marlins, Phillies and Nationals in that order. But I do expect the Marlins in 2022 to finish with a similar winning percentage to where the Mets ended in 2021. And if both deGrom and Scherzer miss a good chunk of the season due to injuries, Marlins could finish ahead of them. Just like if Fried and Morton miss a good chunk of the season, Braves could end up in third.

Okay, I’m all for a @MetsFan22 prediction, but did he really have to say that the Braves window is officially closed? This really sucks because he may have made them a dynasty now.

Maybe the Marlins will have a chance to dethrone them since @MetsFan22 predicted that the Mets will have a better decade than the Marlins, but competing against the Mets isn’t exactly a high bar.

Ugh! Why why why did he have to say this about the Braves!?!? This is no longer funny.

@MetsFan22 stick to ruining your Mets and deGrom with predictions of 103-win seasons and statements that deGrom doesn’t have to do anything else in his career to make the Hall. Stay away from the rest of the division.

The question is not whether the Marlins will win 75 games. It’s whether it will be before July is over. That depends on when the season starts. Florida World Series for the next five years. Rays win first, rest are a toss up.

          MF22 has two takes:

          1. His team is the best.
          2. When they’re not, it’s not their fault – injuries, refs, anything but the team actually not playing well.

Meanwhile, the Mets were railroaded out of the World Series in 2000 by the dumpires. Roid rocket chucks a bat and gets nothing? When pre-roid Rocket was tossed out of a playoff game for merely bickering? That’s kind of gross.
