Luke Jackson Diagnosed With Damaged UCL

By TC Zencka | April 2, 2022 at 10:40am CDT

The Braves received disheartening news regarding the health of reliever Luke Jackson, per MLB.com’s Mark Bowman (via Twitter). The team announced MRI results that revealed damage to his ulnar collateral ligament, an injury that often results in Tommy John surgery.

Jackson will explore all the options before making a decision, but Tommy John surgery is certainly within the realm of possibility. In that case, Jackson would not be likely to return until sometime during the 2023 season.

The 30-year-old right-hander is coming off a breakout year for the World Champion Braves. Jackson made 71 appearances, logging 63 2/3 innings, and posted  a sparkling 1.98 ERA during the regular season. There may have been some bounces in Jackson’s favor, as fielding independent pitching marked his performance at 3.66 runs per nine innings. Regardless, he recorded a career-high 31 holds in 2021.

The Braves invested heavily in their bullpen this offseason, however, and ought to be able to weather the loss of Jackson. Kenley Jansen, Kirby Yates, and Collin McHugh were all added to the bullpen this winter to balance lefties Will Smith, Tyler Matzek, and A.J. Minter as late game options for Atlanta.

You aways hate hearing this, but AA did a great job with the bullpen. Braves are still in great shape.

Go to the last few posts of the Mets injuries and you’ll see trolling at it’s finest. (including some self-loathing from myself, as even I can’t help but #LOLmets).

But some of you Braves fans here are so extremely hypocritical, sensitive and easily triggered that it’s comical.

Bad news for Luke Jackson good news is he’ll be paid well and acquire service time. I think since he’s a free agent in 2023 the Braves might have seen the last of Luke Jackson. Considering the Braves have a bunch of pitching near MLB ready. There were definitely times Luke would drive Braves fans nuts. In the end though Luke did help the Braves get a World Series Championship. I hope he recovers well.

Well, that stinks. He came into a real zone last year and has been a solid piece out of the bullpen the last few years (better than most fans give him credit for). Good thing AA loaded the bullpen, but this amplifies my fear the same might happen in the rotation and we are in deep trouble. Wright needs to step up this year. It’s now or never for him. Ynoa, I don’t think he’s truly a starter long term, but hope he repeats last years results. Then need Davidson or Muller to really make it hard to not have them up. Maybe strider also.

If it were me, I’d keep an eye on elder… that dude is gonna be solid for us one day, mark my words. I honestly think he’s ready today. He’s a different breed

The universe recognizes that Snit will NEVER shy away from overusing Luke, so it has decided to step in. Thanks universe! On a serious note, hate to see this – it was going to be the first time in his career where he could just pitch and not have to worry about being the top righty in a contending pen. Hoping for the best for him, on and off the field.

Interesting how people are comparing the loss of Luke Jackson to deGrom. Reaching to fire back I’d say. Oh and don’t look now Max is now hurt. Hamstring injuries tend to linger so oof. But Met fans can keep reaching while met troll Metfan22 remains crying in a dark corner trying to conceal his tears.

MetsFan22 is under the impression that the Mets have 22 rings. However, if you divide that number by the number of games the Mets will win this year (11), you end up with the actual total. 22/11 = 2.

Now take x (number of consecutive years the Mets have failed to reach the NLDS) to the x (number of championships) power and you get the number of years since the Mets last won a World Series.

      6 to the 2nd power (or 6 squared) = 36

Probably not. Braves have some mil arms that should be able to give them quality ML innings. Brooks Wilson might be a capable replacement for Jackson this season. Could be the next man up.

Hope the Braves give Wilson a chance, but probably just as likely this gives Sean Newcomb a bp spot. He’s out of options and looks like a dfa candidate, but the Braves may decide to let him keep hanging on. Sort of hope not. Like to see them replace Jackson w/another righty arm from the minors.

I don’t care what team you’re a ‘fan’ of, if you laugh at the injury of any player from any team you aren’t a fan at all, you’re just a moronic idiot that’s probably never played anything apart from games on your computer or hide and seek with yourself.

Jackson was great all year long, apart from his blip in the play offs which Matzek got him out of, that’s why it’s a team game. I am glad the Braves invited O’Day, good depth to cover for Jackson.

I’m going Matzek, Jansen, Smith. Or if the pitcher doesn’t get 6, O’Day/McHugh, Matzek, Jansen, Smith.
