The NHL draft: Sure, some people watch it. I remember being in a Pittsburgh dive bar (Breswski’s) pre-pandemic, and some people were interested in it. The fact that it was on the tv at all tells you something.

San Diego’s shortstop situation: Ha Seong Kim has an OPS+ of 125. Tatis will be back in two months or less.

I know right? Especially since it is very common for NHL players to immediately enter the NHL.

It was like asking, “Do people still listen to country music?”

Ha, my lack of NHL draft knowledge has been exposed! Needless to say, I’m a team-specific hockey fan, not someone who follows the league from a broader view. Apologies to Gary Bettman and Canada for the inaccurate swipe.

My understanding was that a lot of the European guys stay in leagues in their home countries for a year or two, while a bunch of the U.S./Canada guys play juniors or college post-draft.

Angels on pace to win 99 games. Trout, Ohtani, Rendon, Walsh. Plus Thor, Lorenzen, Sandoval … and, oh yeah, Ohtani again (on the mound. Right, not enough depth to keep up with the Mariners and Blue Jays. OK, sure. Too bad this guy is not too bright.

I’m amazed nobody has yet to call out the Angels opponents thus far.

Twelve games against the Rangers, Marlins, Orioles and Guardians.

Last year those teams lost 102, 95, 110, and 82 games respectively.

I don’t think the Angels will continue to be “on pace” for playing 63% of their entire schedule against teams coming off bad seasons.

“…on pace to…” is probably the dumbest stat possible to use in April. It might have some validity after the AS break, but now is just silly.

Anthony Rizzo is on pace to hit 76 HRs. The Giants are on pace to win 117 games. Neither of those things are happening.

Arte, Don’t get me wrong, though not an Angels fan, I do have a soft spot for them, and I like seeing them more competitive. But depth is not the top 7 players on the team being very, to extremely, talented. Depth is what is needed when the inevitable injuries happen. No team stays 100% healthy all season.

The Angels don’t even have a top 10 lineup, they have players that are scrubs that would have been more in style in the 80’s (Fletcher and Wade, probably Ward too) lineups than now. They have so much money tied up with Rendon, which was dumb, and still paying Upton that they can’t do any meaningful additions when Syndergaard goes down.

          Stop being a crazy homer.

The Angels have 3 starting pitchers in the top 15 in the AL in fWAR
    Shohei Ohtani 0.7 fWAR
    Patrick Sandoval 0.6 fWAR
    Noah Syndergaard 0.5 fWAR

you still need depth, especially on the pitching side who do you have that can stand up and take a rotation spot for a few weeks to maybe a month +. what do you do if ohtani gets hurt and can’t pitch for 3 weeks to a month or thor gets hurt also given his track record. that’s why no one is high on the angels, you have a good team and pitching but have no depth so you’re counting on a lot of “if things go right”.

p.s. in no way am i wishing ill will or hopping ohtani or thor or anyone else on the angels i was just using them as an example

Noah Syndergaard, Patrick Sandoval and Michael Lorenzen, three starters not named Shohei Ohtani, have combined for a 1.71 ERA in 47 1/3 innings.

You sound like a guy who will be singing the same tune 40 games into the season. Not sure why you won’t admit that a healthy Trout and another year of Ohtani is a better 1-2 punch than any other team in the American League. Must be East Coast bias?

Trout and Ohtani combined is an amazing 1-2 punch. But the drop to #3 is precipitous.

Check back after 120 games, that will matter.

Don’t sleep on the Angels. They are a completely different team than years past. Solid RP/SP, amazing team speed and great defense complement an already good offense. That said, much of the depth on the 40 man roster is young and unproven – Bachman, Canning, Buttrey, Marte, Pequero, Bush, etc. The Angels can make some noise, but they will need to stay healthier than recent years or have some young guys step up when called upon.

Amazing team speed? Other than Ohtani, Trout and Adell, who else is fast? Marsh? They definitely have some more athletic guys than in years past, but amazing speed isn’t an accurate description.

Every night, the Angels have at least five speed demons in the line-up – Ohtani, Trout, Adell, Marsh, Wade and Velasquez. Im not familiar with every teams line-up, but a quick review of Statcast’s Sprint Speed shows that no team has six guys that can match the Angels top six.

Trout has run 30+ ft/sec and 29.9 ft/sec the last two nights. And all but Ohtani have exceeded 30.0 ft/sec multiple times this year which is the elite of the elite.

Yeah, the Angels are improved. I wish the best the best for them for now. But what does that mean, don’t sleep on the Angels.? With guys like Trout, Ohtani, Syndegard, Rendon (yes, Rendon), and young guys like Adell and Marsh, nobody with more than a casual interest is sleeping on the Angels. The talent is obvious

But it’s a long season. Slumps and injuries happen. Seems like they lack depth, And don’t quite agree with the “solid RP/SP” take. The back end of the rotation is questionable. And they have some good relievers, but not a lot of them.

They clearly have playoff potential, but Angels fans shouldn’t count too much on a division title, let alone a WS title.

Tad, when I said, don’t sleep on the Angels, I was referring to the fact that some posters on MLBTR feel the Angels lack depth and don’t have solid RP/SP. Some have suggested the backend of the rotation is questionable and the Angels have some good RP, but not a lot of them. Hope this helps.

Just to get a baseline from Anthony Franco and others who claim that the Yankees have a lot more depth … are we to assume Cole, Severino, Montgomery, Taillon, and Cortes is seen as a healthy and deep rotation?

Just trying to understand the logic here.

Agree, That was unnecessarily harsh. I’d bet that every MLBTR writer knows much more than those of us commenting here. It’s to imagine that guy devotes as much time researching players to the extent that Anthony does. I think it’s more about hearing negatives/positives about the team he likes/hates.

also the writers here deserve a lot of credit, providing solid mlb info can’t be easy especially having to filter out what real and what’s bs, then do it quicker than anyone else. also let’s not forget that this is a free site without the funding the big boys like espn has, and yet they come out with accurate info faster than them
