Yankees, Greg Bird Agree To Minor League Deal

By Anthony Franco | April 5, 2022 at 8:43am CDT

The Yankees have signed first baseman Greg Bird to a minor league contract, reports Sweeny Murti of WFAN (Twitter link). Bird, who was just released by the Blue Jays after failing to crack the Opening Day roster, will report to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. If he cracks the big league roster, he’d earn a $1MM base salary, reports Joel Sherman of the New York Post (on Twitter).

Bird returns to the only organization with which he’s suited up at the major league level. One of the better prospects in the New York system during his days in the minors, the lefty-hitting Bird debuted in the majors with a .261/.343/.529 showing in 178 plate appearances in 2015. That set him up as a possible first baseman of the future in the Bronx. Unfortunately, he missed the entirety of the 2016 season due to a shoulder injury that required surgery, and he’s yet to rediscover his debut-season form.

Over parts of three seasons between 2017-19, Bird hit just .194/.287/.388 in 522 plate appearances. New York designated him for assignment after the 2019 campaign, and he hasn’t played in the majors since then. Over the past two seasons, the former 5th-round pick has joined the Rangers, Phillies, Rockies and Blue Jays organizations on minor league pacts, but he hasn’t gotten another big league call. Reports this spring suggested he was seriously in the running for an Opening Day spot in Toronto, but the Jays opted for more defensive flexibility in promoting utility infielder Gosuke Katoh instead.

While Bird hasn’t had much big league success of late, he’s coming off a solid season with the Rockies top affiliate in Albuquerque. He hit .267/.362/.532 with 27 homers for the Isotopes — albeit in one of the most hitter-friendly environments in affiliated ball. The Yankees have fellow left-handed hitter Anthony Rizzo at first base, but Bird can step into the high minors as a depth option.

Unless you are picking in maybe the top 5, don’t draft a catcher early. It just feels like a huge failure rate. I would just plan to spend $300k on a new international catcher every year.

Captain Judge99 You might just be the biggest D on this entire site. Are you a Yankee fan or just some clown who mocks everything they do? Reading some of your other comments you come across as a petulant ten year old boy with literally zero clue about the game. If they’re your team then pipe down and root for them instead of posting nonsense and insults on every move they make. It’s guys like you that give Yankee fans a bad name. What’s funny is that if they have a great season you’ll probably be the first one on here talking about how you knew it all along. Go root for the Mets bro they love to throw money at everything these days and it seems like that’s what you want.

@Mystery Team- I love the Yankees. This off- season has pained me. I’m not expecting a great season. I don’t like to throw money around either. The handwriting on the wall was set when Boone and Ca$hman we’re retained. If I don’t like moves, I say so. There is nothing wrong with that as a true fan. Is there?

How about add in some 35+ guy in AA as well? I can’t see Burnes & Woodruff being any good going forward. Probably end up being at best 5th starters, while Bird has the potential to be a future Mike Trout type of player. 😀

This was the cringiest thing I’ve read on this website.

Your team hasn’t won a single WS since I graduated high school. My team has won three (3) since the Yankees have won one. The Red Sox have won two (2).

Yankee fans are the Nebraska football fans of baseball. They think that because they used to be great that they are still great, when in reality, everyone else has surpassed them in greatness.

I’m sorry you’re deeply triggered by me mocking Yankee fans for overhyping all of their players. The good news is, you get Greg Bird back. Now he can finally have that Hall of Fame career y’all insisted he’d have,

So, you actually had to do the math to pick an arbitrary middle school year? That doesn’t really have the impact you were looking for, friend.

But you are literally arguing about not caring about the Yankees on a Yankees thread with Yankees fans after you started trying to make fun of the Yankees for not winning a championship since 2009. That is a bit paradoxical, you must admit.

No, I’m simply pointing out how long it’s been since the Yankees last won a WS title. Current 8th Graders weren’t even born yet. That’s a long time.

Want a different arbitrary standard? It was three presidential terms ago. We’ve had over 10 different versions of the iPhone since. You can pick which one it is.

But.I made a simple joke about how frequently Greg Bird was included into fan trade ideas, which existed here, Twitter, Facebook pages, Bleacher Report, as well as even promulgated by key Yankee writers.

Again, I’m sorry Yankee fans are too fragile to comprehend and take a simple joke when it’s given. I used to see your fanbase as simply goofy and cringy. Now, I see it as mentally and emotionally weak.

I don’t care about the Yankees. I care about aggravating their fans, because it’s so easy and so much fun. Y’all are ridiculous and over-the-top, always.

“Occasional miracle year” is hilarious considering we’re literally pushing 13 years since the Yankees have even won a pennant. My team has done it THREE times. Three. Or, if you’re struggling with counting, one more than the amount of remaining brain cells in that noggin of yours.

Yankee fans really want to live out their glory days. But they fail to realize that young baseball fans have lived their entire life without even seeing them in the World Series.

The Yankees aren’t baseball’s premier team anymore. No one is interested in what your team did 60 years ago. Or even 20.

It’s time to accept this. No one is jealous of you or your team. We don’t care if you find us insignificant. We aren’t interested in the opinions of stupid people, which you are.

Welcome to the present age. The Yankees are a has been. Know your place.

For what its worth, we have 25 kids in that club. 20 different “favorite teams”. Not a single Yankees fan amonst the 12-18 year old students we have.

I get a kick seeing Yankee fans get triggered by reminding them of the laughable Greg Bird trades y’all pushed. If that bothers you, then it’s working.

Love how selective you are, don’t go back to the current era of baseball that started after the 94 strike in which case the Yankees have been to and won more WS than any other team.
Of course, you rant on our history, it is because you don’t have any, losers don’t record their history they bury it like crap in a litter box, because they know it stinks, the Yankees on the other hand are baseball history, people all around the world even in the most remote regions sport a Yankee cap because they know it is synonymous with success, power and prestige.
No one wears a Giant cap except clowns like you and the homeless people of SF who outnumber Giant fans 2 to 1, trying to keep their heads warm in that chilly SF air.

Seriously, mister, it’s hard to imagine that being exposed to your mentality is what at-risk kids need. Generally speaking, socialization is a big part of the challenge faced by kids like that. To be blunt, you come across as someone who needs to do some growing up himself. And please know this: all kids, at-risk or otherwise, learn more from how you act than from what you say.

But you are proving my points in that we are neither affected emotionally or citing bad trade ideas. We are responding to your assertion on a Yankees thread, to Yankees fans, that these trade ideas are promulgated by Yankees fans. This was also said of Frazier/Andujar, etc.

What I’m pointing out to you is that it’s non-Yankees fans that persist in going on the Yankees forums & advocated those hyperbolic trades, which is why you see them, but that’s not Yankee fans.

To clarify, I think you have a very real misunderstanding of the context of your assertions, including which who is actually emotionally affected. Your interpretation of success in your objective to frustrate Yankees fans, although harmless, is based solely on responses during a conversation. Nonetheless, you may not realize that you’ve made several personal references to your youth & that arbitrary time frame which literally means nothing. Iphone versions? I don’t get it, who cares how many? It’s relative, man.

Look l, I think there was a lot of projecting, but obviously you’re still *very* emotionally tied to your high school days, which is evident in your statements & the fact you now work with high school kids, thus putting yourself back into your own high school environment as a kid with authority this time.

It’s very telling, honestly, & I could go further, but I don’t think you want me to….. Good luck, man, & move past the past. Live for today. You don’t have to relive that environment to feel like you achieve something, bro.

@Fink Ployd, you can cut out the self-righteous nonsense. No one in my organization remotely cares that I have some fun at Yankees’ fans’ expense. It won’t and doesn’t affect my job, nor is it reflective of these kids’ challenges or their upbringings.

Pretending that someone trolling Yankees fans online is somehow furthering the challenges they face is so laughably ignorant and, honestly, insulting to everyone’s intelligence.

But perhaps you know more about these kids than I do. I’m sure Matt, a HS senior, is going to be set back by these comments. These are clearly worse for him than having two incarcerated parents and living in the foster system.

How dare I have fun at Yankees fans’ expense!!! THINK OF THE CHILDREN!

          LMAO.

Bruh, it’s a joke. And you’re extremely offended that I would assert that Yankee fans made these trade ideas. They absolutely did. And the 10 upvotes on my initial comment do nothing but prove that others have seen the same.

“Look l, I think there was a lot of projecting, but obviously you’re still *very* emotionally tied to your high school days, which is evident in your statements & the fact you now work with high school kids, thus putting yourself back into your own high school environment as a kid with authority this time.”

You’re literally psychoanalyzing a joke. Like, think about that for a second. You’re so triggered by a joke that you’re psychoanalyzing the person who made it and making hilariously silly assumptions about them.

But then you want everyone to believe you aren’t bothered by it? GTFOH.

Dude, I don’t have to “relive” anything. The only people bringing up all the history are Yankee fans, never mind that their “rich history” is over a decade ago.

I work with at-risk teens and we have a 96% rate of our students graduating from high school, and for those that go onto college, we have an 80% grad rate. I’ve personally worked to get kids into dream schools and dream jobs. We create a safe place for young men and women to get away from dangerous home environments. Heck, last night, I was there until 2AM because one kid’s mom had to take a double shift at her job.

I didn’t take the job to “relive” anything or to be a “kid with authority”… I did it to help end the cycles of violence, poverty, and crime in my community. Over the last several years, we’re making strides, but there’s still work to do.

So how about you and your secondary account (Yankeesniper) go back to whatever hole you crawled out of so you can continue to pretend you’re still in 1998?

You clearly know nothing about me, and you’re obviously bothered by a joke. (If you weren’t, you would have moved on, or simply not wasted your time defending Yankees fans).

And for what it’s worth, the board president is coming to my office this morning. HE’S A RED SOX FAN. I’ll be happy to show him this thread LMAO.

“Love how selective you are, don’t go back to the current era of baseball that started after the 94 strike in which case the Yankees have been to and won more WS than any other team.”

I grew up as a diehard Nebraska football fan (I still root for them, for what it’s worth), and can remind anyone of how dominant they were in the 90s. You know what the proper response is: “okay, that was 20+ years ago, who still cares?”

We’re getting to a point where we’ll have an entire generation of kids be born and go to HS before the Yankees win a World Series. They aren’t a premier team in the MLB anymore. They used to be. But they aren’t anymore.

People who live in the past do so because they have no prospect for the future. They do so because they don’t like the present. They do so because they weak, feeble people who have to retreat 20+ years in the past to feel relevant and feel good about the team they’ve invested in.

You feel a sense of superiority over other fans, why? Because your team did something three decades ago? CONGRATS!

Trust me, despite your hilariously cringey suggestions, no one is envious of Yankees fans. You’re actually the laughingstock of the rest of baseball. So keep living in the 90s, little fella. Maybe sometime within the last few breaths of life you have remaining your team will sniff a World Series. I wouldn’t bank on it though. Everyone else in baseball has caught up to the Yankees, and they’ve been ahead of them for over a decade now.

Sooooo, thanks for going right ahead and verifying exactly what I was saying. You keep using terms like, “triggered” and such, but you’re the only one who’s upset, clearly. Then, you say it’s all a joke while inserting your real life job with kids, and it’s impact thereupon, in the middle, so I’m not sure if you understand how counterintuitive that is to your “joke” theory.

Anyway, you are the only frustrated, angry, triggered one here. We simply responded. For someone who came here to troll Yankees fans in an effort to frustrate us, you sure are getting frustrated, a lot.

I feel bad for you. I’m not upset, yet you clearly need that to be the case. I hope you can persevere & get through your real issues, man. If you need to vent on here to help you to, so be it. But, you should at least do some reflection, especially on the repeated HS stuff. Gets a bit weird after you mention it for the twentieth time when it has no relevance.

LOL. I made a joke about the dumb trade ideas Yankee fans relentlessly pump out and you and your troll account, as well as other fans, got real uppity about it.

One of y’all even insinuated something about me regarding little kids. Let that sink in. Over a joke about the Yankees, someone felt that they should call me something pretty vile. (We call that projection, but we don’t need to get into that.)

I mention “HS stuff” because it was a point to show how long it’s been since the Yankees were even in a championship. Anyone acting like the Yankees are still a premier baseball team, when we have teenagers who weren’t even born the last time they won, is a pretty laughable take.

Of course it’s an “arbitrary” measure. I could simply point out that it was 2009, but you’d need to borrow the collective brain cells of the rest of your little friends to figure out exactly how long ago that was. So I figured I’d help you out with some perspective.

Seriously, Yankee fans have to be the most laughable base of any sports team in America. You think that shouting “27 rings!” makes everyone jealous or somehow envious.

Want more perspective? Freshmen in college have seen one (1) Yankees championship. The second most recent Yankees championship is old enough to drink.

Trust me, no one, literally no one outside your dweebish fanbase remotely cares about your team. And we’ll continue to make jokes at your expense.

P.S.: The reason I’ve defended my occupation is because people like you kept attacking it or attacking me. That’s right, you attacked me because you couldn’t handle a joke. (My guess is you couldn’t actually understand the joke, but I never expected you to be able to.).

          “I’m not upset”

It seems otherwise. You got really frustrated that I brought up those trade ideas and even went so far to pretend like they were only posted by non-Yankees fans.

Don’t feel bad for me. I’m actually making a difference in this world. Meanwhile, you’re sitting around shoveling potato chips down your trap and getting a half-chub to the thought of the Mark Teixeira days.

Maybe you can make up for it by suggesting a Juan Soto for Jasson Dominguez and Luis Gil trade on Twitter. I’m sure that’ll cheer up the 13-year-drought woes. (And I’m guessing it’s not the only 13-year drought you’re currently facing… cousins don’t count).

          Anyways, see ya.

Well, I never did make fun of your job. I wouldn’t. As far as your anger issues, they’re apparent. But, just leave the forum then. You’re the one insulting people here, not me. I have not insulted you, at all.

Maybe someone else did an you have mistaken it for my post, but it wasn’t me. Nonetheless, you have put tremendous effort into arguing others are angry through demonstrable anger.
I’d just suggest you step back, understand that it’s an online baseball forum, & you admittedly came here to try to aggravate people. It didn’t work, and it’s a sad goal, but you’ve apparently made it a priority, so, okay.

I think you need help, & I hope you get it, man. That’s not anger, it’s me telling you it really seems like you may need to talk with someone because something seems very off with your manner of communication & interpretation of emotion/comments (ie, perceived anger, perceived insults, & whatever you are talking about regarding an alternate account). Then, while claiming to be the victim of insults, you insult, over and over. Baseball aside, fandom aside, it seems like you may need to talk to someone. What started as jesting over fandom seems to hold some very real, deep-seeded issues for you. Talk to someone, be a positive influence on those kids, please, & encourage them to be kind, & treat people well. I truly hope you get right.

          “I think you need help”

Coming from a dude who literally got upset that I (accurately) suggested that Yankee fans notoriously make bad trade ideas.

Want the recap of your comment? I’ll quote it for you:

“Yet, ironically, there is only ONE place on the internet a ridiculous Greg Bird trade idea is posited…. and of course, it’s NOT a Yankee fan, it’s the guy accusing Yankees fans “all over the internet” of doing it…… lol.”

If you had even a modicum of ability to see an obvious joke, you wouldn’t have bothered. But then you did. And you did so in an offended fashion. Why? Because you’re unbelievably sensitive.

I teach the kids I work with how to handle jokes that involve them, whether specifically, or indirectly. It’s a good life lesson to be able to take a joke, even if it steps on your toes a bit. And I also teach that our response to a joke says a lot about us.

I made a joke at Yankees fans’ expense. It was a rather innocent joke pointing out the truth: there were A LOT of very dumb trades where Yankee fans thought they could get an All Star for Greg Bird. The comment sections on this site were flooded with them for a long time.

That simple, yet truthful joke, suddenly turned into you and your friends getting worked up over it. Dismissing it’s truthfulness, insulting those who speak against the Yankees, and calling me jealous or suggesting I’m “envious.” It was a hilarious response, really. And it spoke volumes about your fanbase, and about you.

Your insistence to speak down to me, “get help” and your condescension is hilarious. But ultimately, empty and meaningless. Next time, learn to take a joke, be okay with the fact that you and your fellow Yankee fans can do some unbelievably goofy and cringey things and that baseball fans will have fun at your expense over it.

Go look no further than Yankeesniper’s first comment (I’m 97% that person is also you, but that’s a different discussion for a different day), it’s beyond cringe. If another team’s fanbase did that, I would expect nothing more than for other fans to drag them for it. This is the internet, if you can’t take a joke, then perhaps stick to crossword puzzles.

It’s obvious you can’t take one. And that’s funny, because you are one.

Have a good day. (Or don’t. Your call)

My response was a joke pointing out the obvious fact that you’re the source of your information, which is why the “lol” was added. Again, your interesting and extreme misinterpretation of a response to a joke which you took very, very seriously for some reason.

I don’t know who Yankeesniper is, but our comments are polar opposites. Our language, punctuation, & opinions differ on invariable topics, including Yankees-specific ones. You just aren’t aware.

Again, you need help. I responded with a joke & it’s concerning how you’ve cemented your thought process into a victimhood mentality by people responding to your overt attempts to solicit those same responses. It’s very concerning behavior. It’s irrational, it’s inaccurate, & it’s not healthy for you.

I’m way past the whole joking part and concerned for the person that is you. I let you know several long paragraphs ago I was never upset, angry or frustrated, it was merely in response to your joke. Yet you persist in modeling very strong anti-social behavioral characteristics while maintaining your original & baseless accusations.

          – Just go talk to someone (a professional) & you’ll find some help in that, I think. Your fight isn’t with me, man, although you’re looking there. It’s within yourself….

“Tanking” is a strategy of intentionally losing games in order to get a higher draft position. The Yankees are one of the few franchises that NEVER tank, They are always fighting for a playoff spot, at minimum. I contrast with, say, Houston, which at one point actually tried to be as bad as possible; and in another approach, Boston, who gave away some actual talent in order to free up their payroll from massive deadweight contracts.

Interesting move on both sides. If I was in Bird’s shoes, I’d try to find a new team that might have an opening either at 1B or DH. I don’t see a path for him to get MLB ABs with the Yankees.

The Orioles have no need for such a long shot as Bird. He hasn’t been good in six years. The chances of him doing anything for anyone are too tiny for even a last place team to bother with. He’s AAAA fodder at this point.

I assume Bird may be interested because of the opt-out Rizzo has on his already-short contract and the existing lack of 1B depth in the Yankees system. Planning on getting healthy for a year & then making a run at MLB again, maybe?

Additionally, I wonder if he sees some of the younger guys hitting really well in the minors & seeks to capitalize on that coaching.
