The Tigers and Phillies got together on a trade today. The Phillies sent Triple-A right-hander Michael Mariot to the Tigers in exchange for cash considerations, per MLB.com’s Todd Zolecki (via Twitter).
Mariot, 33, has not appeared in the Majors since 2016. He has 44 career appearances to his name – all out of the bullpen – between the Royals and Phillies from 2014 to 2016. With the Phillies, he made 25 appearances with a 5.85 ERA/5.96 FIP across 21 2/3 innings during that 2016 season.
Since that time, Mariot has bounced around the league, spending time with the Phillies, Royals, Padres, and Reds, but not yet making it back to the bigs. He may have that opportunity with the Tigers, who have seen their big league rotation limited by injuries. Mariot, meanwhile, has made 11 starts in Triple-A this season, pitching to a 4.64 ERA over 52 1/3 innings.

Tigers are gonna regret trading top prospect Cash Considerations when it’s time to fill up the fuel tank on the team’s plane.
Francys01
The Phillies have to be like Zaidi/ Giants and Dodgers that they sign a lot of players to minor league deals during the off-season and the regular season to see if they make a difference and contribute to the team. Yusmeiro Petit could be a reliever that could help the Phillies bullpen.
Samer
How MUCH “Cash considerations”?! They seldom say.

is this that damn Loch Ness Monster again

Well Avilia had to break the ice wirh Dombrowski lol

Maybe more deals coming!
Tigers have some relievers that could help the Phillies

I think this is the first trade between the Tigers Al Avila and Dave Dombrowski since Dombrowski left the Tigers. Dombrowski and Avila were a long time team with the Marlins and the Tigers.
The shabby, cloak and dagger way that Mike Illitch fired Dombrowski for starting a long needed rebuild before Illitch was ready(the farm was decimated, the Tigers team was sliding backwards and downhill with a roster that was loaded with big contract, declining veterans fighting to stay out of last place).
There was definitely some “bad blood” at the way Mike Illitch ended Dombrowski’s run in Detroit after Dombrowski rebuilt a cellar dwelling team (10-15 years not really competitive before Dombrowski) into a perennial playoffs team and World Series competitor.
Many believe that if the Tigers had kept Dombrowski, that they would have been pennant contenders much sooner.
This might “open the door” for the Tigers and Phillies to
“match up” on other trades….
stymeedone
And it might not. Doubt there was much “bad blood” as any GM knows that if they don’t do what the owner wants, they won’t keep their job.

I don’t believe, for a second, that Dombrowski could have speeded up the rebuild. First, he created the need to rebuild. He traded away everything of value in the minors and had a bloated portfolio of bad contracts. I’m not sure that anyone who creates that bad of a mess is the person to guide a rebuild.
But, that had been Dombrowski’s method of operation. No denying he’s had some playoff success, but in the long run, it’s not the way to run a baseball team. Even he has said, going forward with the Phillie’s, he (would) change the way he manages his organization.
Finally, any “bad blood” was the result of Dombrowski testing the free agent waters while he was still the Tigers GM and his failure to communicate with Mr. Ilitch about his future with the Tigers. I would have fired him, too, if I looked around and saw the mess he made and it became clear he had no intention of cleaning it up.

Do keep in mind, Mr. I encourage the spending. He wanted a Championship before his death. DD got fired because he was ready to stop spending. Lastly, Al was not the right person for the rebuild. Or should I say this never ending rebuild.
SportsFan0000
It is going on 5 years. The White Sox rebuilt for 11-12 years.
SportsFan0000
They should have started the rebuild a few years before Dombrowski made the 1st few trades to get “maximum value” in trades.
Illitch kept wanting to “double down” even when the farm system had been emptied out.
Dombrowski was ordered by Marlins Owner Wayne Huzienga to tear it down after the Championship parade. The players Dombrowski received in deals matured into another Marlins Championship team after he left for Detroit.
Dombrowski followed his ownership’s business plan in each city he worked:
In Montreal and Miami he built championship teams with draft picks, building farm system, some trades and low budget.
In higher spending Detroit and Boston, he build it with farm, money, free agents and trades.
In Philadelphia, he will try all that is in his bag of tricks.
Yes there was bad blood and cloak and dagger when Dombrowski was fired in Detroit. Illitch went behind his back and hired Avila and kept everything “hush, hush”.
It was done in a very “low class” manner.
Dombrowski shows up to work with his young son.
Everyone on Staff including Avila, his Manager, his Front Office was instructed not to talk to him that day
Dombrowski wonders what is up?,
Finally, Illitch sends someone to get Dombrowski and fires him
in a side office down in the Clubhouse?
By phone call? After he spent 10 years turning Detroit’s dumpster fire team into AL Champions and perennial playoffs contenders?!
And his young son was there to see and witness his Dad get canned?!
Very low class of Mike I..
Mike I knew Dave D was going to trade some guys at the deadline.
They discussed it. It was strictly a baseball decision.
It was the only way to fix the team going forward.
Mike Illitch let Dombrowski make those last trades.
Then, he got mad and fired the guy?!
If he didn’t want him to trade anyone then why not fire him before
the trade deadline.
Illitch knew what had to be done and knew Dave Dombrowski was the best man to do it and get a very good return for the Tigers.

Dombrowski is good at two things. Making blockbuster trades for win now teams, and spending money.
He did an awesome job though of bringing basically all of his Marlins success over to the tigers, which might’ve been his greatest success. Surprised he never traded for Miggy with the Red Sox.
SportsFan0000
Dombrowski also built top rated farm systems brimming with talent and future Hall of Famers in both Montreal and Miami..
(both lower budget markets)

Mariot’s UCL just screamed, “Oh no!”

Casey Lawrence would’ve been a better target. Almost anyone else qualified for the AAA ERA title would’ve been better as well.

Probably sleeping at a Holiday Inn Express tonight…

I’d imagine he’ll be pretty productive tomorrow then.

When was the last trade between Philadelphia and Detroit? Anyway, getting additional starting depth is crucial for the Tigers. Although, if necessary I would rather see Garrett Hill called up, who has good number in the Tigers organization since they drafted him in 2018.

I only record significant trades. The trades between DET and PHI have been significant. The last trade I recorded between DET and PHI was Placido Polanco for Ugueth Urbana and Ramon Martinez. The rest are Willie Hernandez and Dave Bergman for Johnny Wockenfuss and Glenn Wilson. Don Demeter and Jack Hamilton for Jim Bunning. DET also purchased Mike Marshall and made a Waiver claim on Woodie Frymann.
CHC has done well trading with PHI in the past whereas DET has done the best trading with CLE.
alproof
This one makes no sense at all.

Nice job on the homework
TroyVan
He probably won’t get an opportunity to pitch in Detroit. Rather, he’s a warm body to fill in for the Mud Hens when the Tigers recall other, possibly more deserving pitchers. Still have a couple-few down there rehabbing, plus others like Brieske and Faedo who were called up for what was believed to be temporary roles that have morphed into possible major league careers.
But, I wish him the best of luck. You won’t hear me complain about having another serviceable arm in the organization.
DarkSide830
Strange move to me. Mariot was eating innings for LHV that were badly needed.
GarryHarris
Philadelphia could call up Bailey Falter. He seems to be near ready.
gotigers68
“Limited by injuries”……2022’s understatement of the year !
LABeachguy
Dombroski has always been good with trades, his mini rebuild while he was with the Tigers at the end with trading David Price to Toronto for Daniel Norris and Matt Boyd was a good one. You know he would have done better with trading JD and JV and others.
SportsFan0000
Mike Illitch should have let Dombrowski finish the rebuild/retooling of the roster like Wayne Huzienga did with the Marlins Championship he built there.
The players Dombrowski got back in the teardown of their 1st championship team became the cornerstones of their 2nd championship team after Dombrowski had left for Detroit.
