Players Entering Minor League Free Agency
Major League free agents became eligible to sign with other teams on Thursday, but the minor league free agent market has technically been open since season’s end. MLBTR has published several posts detailing players who had already elected to become minor free agents, but Baseball America’s Matt Eddy (multiple links) has the full account of all the minor league free agents that officially joined their big league counterparts on the open market on Thursday.

Mariners, Michael Mariot Agree To Minor League Deal
The Mariners have signed right-handed pitcher Michael Mariot to a minor league contract, according to his transaction log on MLB.com. He has been assigned to the Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers. Mariot, 35, was previously under contract with the Diablos Rojos del México of the Mexican League, but the Diablos Rojos released him earlier this week, presumably to allow him to sign with the Mariners.
The Royals selected Mariot in the eighth round of the 2010 draft, and he made his MLB debut with Kansas City in 2014. From 2016 to ’18, he played in the Phillies, Padres, and, once again, Royals organizations. After the Royals released him in August 2018, the righty spent time in the Atlantic League, the Mexican League, and the American Association before making his way back to affiliated ball. Between 2021 and ’22, he spent time in the Reds, Nationals, Phillies, and Tigers organizations before jetting off to Taiwan to join the CTBC Brothers of the Chinese Professional Baseball League.
His league-switching continued the following year. Mariot signed with the Cleburne Railroaders of the American Association in May before the Reds purchased his contract that summer. In September 2023, he made his first big league appearance since 2016, going 2 2/3 innings against Seattle, giving up one run on four hits. Perhaps the Mariners saw something they liked that day.
Although Mariot has not had much lasting success with any league or at any level throughout his professional career, he has clearly demonstrated a willingness to pitch – traveling the world to do so. This year, Mariot will eat innings for the Rainiers for as long as they need him to, and he offers the Mariners a serviceable option for a spot start or long-relief appearance.
Five Reds Elect Free Agency
Five players who spent time with the Reds in 2023 are now free agents, per the transaction log on MiLB.com: Michael Mariot, Alejo López, Matt Reynolds, Kevin Herget, and Alec Mills. All five were designated for assignment and sent outright to Triple-A at some point during the year. Following the conclusion of the regular season, they had the right to elect free agency, a right which they have now exercised.
Mariot pitched in one game for Cincinnati in 2023, marking his first big league appearance since 2016. Over the past seven years, he has signed minor league deals with the Reds, Padres, Royals, Phillies, and Tigers, as well as contracts with teams in the Atlantic League, the Mexican League, the American Association, and the Chinese Professional Baseball League. While his MLB stint with the Reds didn’t last long, it’s undeniably impressive that the 34-year-old righty made it back to the big leagues after so much time away. In all likelihood, he will look to sign another minor league contract for 2024.
Unlike Mariot, who has bounced around quite a bit throughout his professional career, López has played in the Reds organization since the team selected him in the 27th round of the 2015 draft. The utility man made his major league debut in 2021 and earned semi-regular playing time in 2022, appearing in 61 games with a .645 OPS. Unfortunately for López, he was designated for assignment before the 2023 season, and with so much infield depth on the roster, the Reds only selected his contract for a couple of brief stints with the big league club; he appeared in one game, hitting a double and scoring a run. Still just 27 years old and with an option year remaining, he’ll look to latch on with a new club in need of infield (and outfield) depth this offseason.
Despite playing 92 games for the Reds last year, Reynolds didn’t stick around long in 2023. He was DFA’d in January but had his contract selected again in April after Wil Myers hit the injured list. He remained on the roster for just over a week, appearing in two games. Out of minor league options, he was DFA’d again once Myers returned and spent the rest of the season at Triple-A, splitting his time between all four infield positions. Reynolds has played in the majors in six of the past seven seasons, and after posting an .865 OPS at Triple-A, the versatile infield defender and former second-round pick should be able to find another minor league deal over the winter.
Following an impressive performance at Triple-A, Herget made his MLB debut last season at 31 years old. In three appearances for the Rays, he gave up six runs in seven innings of work, but evidently, he did enough to earn a more extended look with the Reds in 2023. After signing a minor league deal with Cincinnati over the offseason, Herget had his contract selected in early April. Across five separate stints with the big league club, he threw 24 1/3 innings, winning a game and collecting a save. While he gained more MLB experience this year, Herget failed to produce encouraging numbers at either the major or minor league level, posting an ERA over five at each. As a free agent, he will have the opportunity to negotiate a new minor league deal. Alternatively, he could choose to return to independent league ball, having previously played in the Atlantic League and the American Association.
Mills is perhaps best remembered for his 2020 campaign with the Cubs, his only season as a full-time starting pitcher. He finished with five wins in 11 starts, including a no-hitter against the Brewers on September 13. Following a less effective season in 2021 and an injury-marred campaign in 2022, Mills was sent outright to Triple-A and elected free agency after the season. He signed a minor league deal with the Reds in 2023 and spent most of the year at Triple-A Louisville, posting a 6.10 ERA in 12 games (nine starts). In his lone MLB appearance, he gave up five runs (two earned) in a single inning of work. While it has been a couple of years since he last looked like a capable big league pitcher, the 31-year-old righty will presumably look to sign a new minor league deal.
Michael Mariot Accepts Outright Assignment With Reds
Right-hander Michael Mariot has cleared waivers and accepted an outright assignment to Triple-A Louisville, reports Gordon Wittenmyer of the Cincinnati Enquirer. The righty had been designated for assignment earlier this week.
The Reds have been dealing with a number of injuries to their pitching staff this year and saw that problem become exacerbated by an outbreak of COVID-19, which added four more pitchers to the injured list. To try to combat those absences, the Reds have been making moves almost daily to supply fresh arms to the roster.
Mariot, 34, was one of those fresh arms, getting selected to the roster earlier this week. He made one appearance for the Reds, tossing 2 2/3 innings in Monday’s game, allowing one earned run. That was his first major league appearance in many years, as his previous big league experience was with the Royals and Phillies from 2014 to 2016. He now has a combined major league ERA of 5.85 in 52 1/3 innings for his career.
After clearing waivers, Mariot could have rejected this assignment and elected free agency, though finding a better opportunity would have been challenging. Since it is after September 1, Mariot would not have been postseason eligible if he signed with any new club. Instead, he’ll stick with the Reds and serve as some non-roster depth as they continue their playoff push. They are currently half a game back of the Marlins for the final Wild Card spot in the National League.

Reds Select Kevin Herget, Designate Michael Mariot For Assignment
The Reds announced that they have selected the contract of right-hander Kevin Herget, with fellow righty Michael Mariot designated for assignment in a corresponding move.
The Reds were already dealing with a number of significant injuries to their pitching staff this year and that problem has been compounded as COVID-19 has spread around the staff. Each of Hunter Greene, Ben Lively, Brandon Williamson and Fernando Cruz landed on the COVID-related IL in recent days, while pitchers like Nick Lodolo, Justin Dunn and many others were already out of action due to more typical injuries.
That’s led to the club churning pitchers through their roster on an almost daily basis as they try to scramble to cover for those absences. Mariot, 34, was just selected to the roster yesterday and tossed 2 2/3 innings, allowing just one earned run. He was one of seven pitchers the club used as they managed to turn a bullpen day into a 6-3 victory over the Mariners. But as the club continues to require fresh arms, he’s unfortunately been nudged off the roster.
That was Mariot’s first appearance in the big leagues since 2016. He spent most of the intervening time on minor league deals but also spent some time in the Mexican League and Chinese Professional Baseball in Taiwan. He started this year with the Cleburne Railroaders of the independent American Association of Professional Baseball, with a 5.06 ERA for that club but with 29 strikeouts and just five walks in 26 2/3 innings.
That performance got him a minor league deal with the Reds and he threw 37 2/3 Triple-A innings over nine appearances with a 6.93 ERA and 14.3% strikeout rate. He was selected to the roster earlier this year but was designated for assignment without getting into a game. He cleared waivers and accepted an outright assignment, which led to yesterday’s return to a big league mound for the first time in seven years. He’ll be placed on waivers again in the coming days.
His roster spot will go to Herget. The 32-year-old signed a minor league deal with the Reds in the offseason and was selected in early April. He served as an up-and-down reliever for the first half of the season, posting a 5.73 ERA in 22 big league innings. He was designated for assignment in June before clearing waivers and accepting an outright assignment. He has an ERA of 5.01 at Triple-A on the whole this year, but has been better since losing his roster spot. He has a 2.51 ERA over his last 28 2/3 innings, with a 25.7% strikeout rate and 7.3% walk rate in that time. He still has a full slate of options and less than a year of service time, meaning the Reds could potentially use him as a depth option for the foreseeable future.
Reds Select Michael Mariot
The Reds announced that they have recalled right-hander Casey Legumina and selected the contract of righty Michael Mariot. In corresponding moves, righty Brett Kennedy was optioned to Triple-A while righty Lyon Richardson was returned to Triple-A. The club already had a vacancy on its 40-man roster.
Mariot, 34, hasn’t pitched in the majors since 2016. The Reds signed him to a minor league deal in June and selected him to the big league roster in July, though he was designated for assignment a day later without getting into a game. He cleared waivers and accepted an outright assignment at that time, which now leads to his contract being selected a second time this year.

Optioned pitchers normally cannot be recalled for another 15 days but that won’t apply in this unique situation. He is listed as Wednesday’s starter and should be added back to the roster in short order.
Reds Outright Michael Mariot
The Reds sent right-hander Michael Mariot outright to Triple-A Louisville, according to his transaction log at MLB.com. That suggests he went unclaimed on waivers after being designated for assignment over the weekend.
Mariot had an exceedingly brief stay on the Cincinnati roster. The Reds selected his contract on Saturday and carried him for one game. He didn’t pitch and was DFA on Sunday. The 34-year-old is still looking to make his first MLB appearance in seven years.
Owner of a 5.98 ERA over 49 2/3 career major league innings, Mariot joined Cincinnati on a minor league pact a month ago. He started four times for Louisville, working to a 2.59 ERA through 24 1/3 frames. He struck out fewer than 15% of opponents but kept his walks to a pristine 4.2% clip.
Mariot has been outrighted before in his career. He’ll have the right to test minor league free agency as a result, although he could choose to stick with the organization that signed him out of the independent ranks just a few weeks back.
Reds Designate Michael Mariot For Assignment
The Reds activated right-hander Ben Lively from the 15-day injured list this morning, per a club announcement. In a corresponding move, the club designated right-hander Michael Mariot for assignment. Lively is poised to start this afternoon’s game against the Brewers.
Mariot, 34, was selected to the Reds’ roster yesterday but will ultimately end his tenure with the club without making an appearance. Selected by the Royals in the eighth round of the 2010 draft, Mariot made his big league debut in 2014 and pitched in parts of three seasons with Kansas City and Philadelphia, with his last major league appearance occurring back in 2016 with the Phillies. As for Lively, the 31-year-old righty has pitched to a 4.11 ERA (117 ERA+) in 46 innings of work with the Reds this season, with seven of his nine appearances coming has a member of the rotation. The 2023 campaign represents Lively’s first work in the majors since the 2019 season. From 2017-2019, Lively posted a 4.80 ERA (90 ERA+) and 5.03 FIP in 120 innings of work. Lively joins a Reds rotation that currently consists of lefties Andrew Abbott and Brandon Williamson alongside righties Graham Ashcraft and Luke Weaver. The club is currently without top young starters Hunter Greene and Nick Lodolo, both of whom are expected back sometime in August.
Reds Designate Henry Ramos, Select Michael Mariot
The Reds announced that outfielder Henry Ramos has been designated for assignment, and that righty Tony Santillan has been optioned to Triple-A Louisville. Both moves clear space on the 26-man and 40-man rosters for right-hander Michael Mariot, as the Reds have selected Mariot’s contract from Triple-A.
Ramos spent seven weeks on the injured list due to a hip strain, and has hit .242/.356/.306 over 73 plate appearances for Cincinnati and a scorching .318/.404/.568 in 152 PA at the Triple-A level. The Reds’ increasingly crowded roster made it hard for Ramos to find consistent playing time, and so the team has opted to perhaps move on, or just to try and sneak Ramos through DFA waivers. The 31-year-old’s big Triple-A numbers might attract the attention of another team interested in a waiver claim, or Ramos could control his future more directly by rejecting an outright assignment if he did clear waivers. Because Ramos has been outrighted before in his career, he has the ability to turn down any future outright assignments and become a free agent.
Ramos was a fifth-round pick for the Red Sox back in the 2010 draft, and his long stay in the minors finally resulted in 18 MLB games with the Diamondbacks in 2021. Before signing a minor league deal with the Reds last winter, Ramos’ career includes stints with the Red Sox, Dodgers, Giants, Diamondbacks, and a brief stint in the KBO League in 2022.

He signed a minor league deal with the Phillies in March of last year and was traded to the Tigers in June for cash, though neither club called him to the majors. He made 15 starts and three relief appearances on the year, posting a 4.90 ERA in 79 innings. He struck out 16.3% of opponents while walking 9.3%. He then spent some time with the CTBC Brothers of the Chinese Professional Baseball League in Taiwan.
