Mets Acquire Michael Perez From Pirates

By TC Zencka | July 23, 2022 at 11:35am CDT

The Mets are acquiring catcher Michael Perez from the Pirates in exchange for cash considerations, per Jon Heyman of the New York Post (via Twitter). This is the second deal consummated between these two sides in the past two days (Yesterday, the Pirates sent designated hitter Daniel Vogelbach to New York for Colin Holderman). In this case, Perez was designated for assignment yesterday, so the acquisition cost for the Mets was negligible.

To make room on the 40-man roster, the Mets have designated Travis Blankenhorn for assignment, per Tim Healey of Newsday Sports (via Twitter). Blankenhorn was called up to the active roster yesterday, so his designation clears an active roster spot for either Perez or Vogelbach.

In the short run, Perez serves as catching depth, should Tomas Nido require a stint on the injured list for his bruised hand. In that case, Perez would join with Patrick Mazeika to form the Mets’ catching tandem. In the long run, Perez can be optioned to Triple-A, so he can remain in the Mets’ organization to serve as depth once Nido and/or James McCann return.

For the Pirates, this is simply a way to pick up some extra cash for a player they might have lost anyway. They have Jason Delay and Tyler Heineman handling catching duties with Perez now out of the organization. Veteran Roberto Perez remains sidelined after hamstring surgery back in May.

Gonna put on my Amazin’ Kreskin cap and make a prediction:

“August 4th, 2022: The Mets have designated Michael Perez for assignment.”

He’s here for a handful of games so the team doesn’t have to rush Alvarez and burn two weeks of his service time. While part of me wouldn’t have minded seeing one of the Nicks (Meyer or Dini) get a couple ABs to see how they fare against MLB pitching, I’m not going to get upset about a move that literally cost the team money and nothing else.

It just depends on Nido’s injury. As soon as he’s back, Nido is gone, unless he manages to go on a tear or something offensively (very unlikely), in which case Mazeika would be gone. None of the three can hit a lick.

McCann on DL, Nido took a ball off his wrist behind the plate last night, so they have AAA Mazeka now as Primary until he returns and they need a backup. So Perez fits the need, doesn’t cost much, and can go to AAA when not needed, or if they get Contreras from Cubs the formula changes.

I’m usually never a “call up Vientos to DH!” guy or “call up [this or that top prospect]!” guy

But in Alvarez’ case, I don’t get the absolute insistence to keep him at AAA

I get the “defense arguments” and all the arguments about “calling pitches” and “working with pitchers.”

The pitchers aren’t these fragile flakes that need just the right catcher to function or something

Its a lot of scared managing. Absolutely no harm in calling up Alvarez to catch

Maybe they don’t want to lower his prospect value if he hits .180, but if they have no intention to trade him then he should be up

Alvarez will log more time at catcher in AAA and Mets pitchers may not like pitching to him in the bigs. Plus, he’s only played nine games in AAA and only has 3 hits in 27 ABs.

But I agree, their total inability to hit at catcher is reaching a breaking point. If they’re still not hitting at all deep into August, I wouldn’t be surprised if Alvarez got called up.

Alvarez did not catch Scherzer, so Scherzer may have just been talking about Alvarez’s overall makeup. Alvarez DH’ed the game Scherzer pitched. McCann caught Scherzer because he was also on a rehab assignment in Binghamton. Source: I was there! And it was a blast!

I’d give the Mets management some time on this one, we still have Mazeika who does a decent job and Nido isn’t on the IL as of yet, may be they just wanted a quick, cheap, warm body until a large deal can be made. If this guy is as bad as everyone is saying, also may be they could give Alvarez a shot for a short while.

This is just the result of Alderson/Eppler poor management.

The move itself means nothing. But when you look around you see a couple of dumpster divers

Lack of imagination has always plagued Sandy in particular. His roster construction has always been below average. The one thing he’s got going is he’s a great con.

I knew enough to bet Atlanta to win this division and now I’m more sure than ever.

They had an immediate need for a catcher. He didn’t cost prospects. He’s not gonna be the starter for the rest of the season. Get a grip.

Tell me a team that has a better *4TH STRING* catcher just chilling on the roster. What sort of creativity would you like to see a front office pull off in order to not have to make relatively meaningless depth moves on a regular basis. You don’t know quite as much as you think you do apparently.

IMO Philly has a better 4th catcher but your point stands.

They have one of the highest payrolls in baseball. Calling them ‘dumpster divers’ makes absolutely no sense. If you’re going to hate, please try to have the slightest clue as to what you’re talking about.

Blankenhorn of Plenty’s DFA cleared the spot for Perez. Vogelbach takes Holderman’s 40-man roster spot.

Really what it comes down to is the Pirates thought Considerations was an improvement over Perez and yes I can see why. Alot of teams have interest in Considerations, brings alot to the table. Team first attitude, fills any position. Can slot him in anywhere always want him on hand. Kind of a necessity not a luxury.

I hope an organization with a long term plan for Blankenhorn claims him and ends his status as a AAAA/AAA gypsy. The guy deserves better. Are you seeing this Farhan Zaidi ??
How is LaStella working out for the Giants at 2B ??

When he was with the Rays he had nice power to left center, now he’s dead pull and you can see the results.

Bob Nutting ( Pirates Owner) favorite transaction…. Cash. Take a look at the number of recent Pirates Prospects signed to 2nd contacts. We need a new owner that wants to win. Bob just wants to do the bare minimum, then put cash in his bank account. His motto “ Screw the fans”. I am all business and about my money.
