AL Central Notes: Robert, Guardians, Contreras, Tigers, Hinch

By Mark Polishuk | August 13, 2022 at 12:54pm CDT

X-rays were negative on Luis Robert’s left wrist, as the White Sox outfielder has been deemed day-to-day with a sprain.  Robert suffered the injury on a stolen-base attempt in the bottom of the sixth inning in Friday’s game, and was replaced in center field for the top of the seventh.

Chicago’s next off-day doesn’t come until August 29, so there isn’t any room for Robert to get a break without leaving the White Sox undermanned on the roster.  As such, a 10-day injured list visit could be necessary if there’s any lingering soreness, and the Sox might prefer to lose Robert for a few games now in order to get him fully healthy for the rest of the postseason race.  Though he has already missed a couple of weeks (on the COVID-IL and on the regular IL due to blurred vision), Robert has still been a big contributor to the White Sox, hitting .301/.336/.454 with 12 homers in 354 plate appearances.

Other notes from around the AL Central…

  • The Guardians were among the teams who had interest in Willson Contreras at the trade deadline, according to ESPN’s Jesse Rogers.  The Cubs didn’t end up moving Contreras anywhere, while the Guards had a quiet deadline overall — they ended up moving a catcher themselves, dealing Sandy Leon to the Twins in a minor trade.  Despite interest in both Contreras and the Athletics’ Sean Murphy, Cleveland stood pat at catching, leaving Austin Hedges and Luke Maile as the primary tandem behind the plate unless the Guardians look to call up top prospect Bo Naylor.
  • A.J. Hinch ended any speculation that he might seek a move to the Tigers’ front office, telling reporters (including The Athletic’s Cody Stavenhagen) earlier this week “I’m the manager.  I plan on being the manager.”  However, owner Chris Ilitch did state that Hinch would have some input on who might replace Al Avila as the club’s next general manager.  To this end, Jon Heyman of The New York Post suggests that former Diamondbacks and Padres GM Josh Byrnes could be a candidate for the Detroit job — Byrnes and Hinch worked together in Arizona’s front office, with Byrnes giving Hinch his first managerial job in the Diamondbacks’ dugout.  Byrnes has been working as the senior VP of baseball operations for the Dodgers since 2014.

Josh Byrnes would be an excellent choice as the next GM for Detroit. He’s worked under Andrew Friedman for the last 8 seasons and I’m sure he’s learned a lot from doing so. While Detroit won’t spend LA money for their team, the owner is willing to spend in the right situation so Josh should be able to put together an interesting team, especially after Miggy’s deal comes off the books in 2023.

Byrnes would probably be a smart choice for Detroit but I’m not sure Detroit would be a smart choice for Josh. Both Farhan and AA moved on to good situations with their ownership groups.

I am not sure Byrnes is right for the Detroit job. They need someone in the Preller mold. They should look to a team with a solid track record of drafting and graduating prospects. Looking at someone from the Cleveland, St. Louis or Tampa scouting departments would be a good start. Maybe see if they can poach Stearns from Milwaukee. He has to be tired of watching other teams sign the free agents he needs to put the Brewers over the top. Byrnes has shown he is a cookie cutter GM and doesn’t belong in the role unless it’s with a team like the Dodgers, Mets or Yankees where he will have a large checkbook to back up his meh drafting.

Does Byrnes have access to trash cans? Without trash cans, Hinch has a lousy record as a manager.

Hinch is a better manager than that genius in Yankee Stadium that could use some trash cans right now.

While I disagree – I think Hinch is a good manager – I don’t know why he would be consulted on the next GM. I get it that the manager and front office work much closer together these days, so they do need to be on the same page philosophically – what does AJ know about what it takes to be a good GM?

I think Hinch would be more likely to stay in Detroit if he’s happy with the new GM choice and that’s why he’ll be consulted.

I don’t see Hinch as a great manager that they need to sweet talk to get to stay. What has Hinch actually accomplished in his career? The teams he managed in Houston were absolutely loaded with talent.

Why would he leave the organization he built, at a time when the players have started to come up from the rebuild on the fly he orchestrated? A rebuild that should keep Cleveland in contention for the next 5 years.

          That’s the best you got?

He and his family are a part of the Cleveland community for over 20 years. He’s fine financially. So they’re supposed to uproot everything – they’re restart their lives and and he’s to start over building a baseball organization in Detroit. Really? Tell you what – if a large market team such as the Yankees or Red Sox call and promise him complete control in running baseball ops (something he has in Cleveland and something Hal Steinbrenner and John Henry have never done) then maybe he thinks about it.

LOL Nobody is leaving their current position for a parallel move to a dumpster fire Detroit organization. Even if they offered a ton more money, Antonetti knows he wouldn’t make it through the life of that contract bc of the destined failure that’d fall under his watch.

What is stupid about that comment? He has completely decimated DET since he has been there. He would be a great hire regardless, to go to a rival team is a cherry topper.

It may not make sense for him to go to DET, I get it. To go to DET for a massive pay raise might make sense. NOT saying that is going to happen. This is a forum website. I’m making an opinionated comment. Great “call out” for my stupidity all. You win lol

Wouldn’t have gotten injured if he slid in spikes first. Totally blocked from the bag. Had no chance getting his hand in.

Indeed… curious why that’s legal, and not deemed obstruction. The leg isn’t necessary for fielding…

Its legal to ‘block’ 2nd while making a play, but like Steve Stone said during the broadcast (after Benetti brought up the blocking the base point), and Im paraphrasing a bit but, slide in cleats first and when there is blood there will be less obstructing the bag (I kind of cannot believe Stony said something like that actually).

The Tigers don’t have a large market cash flow to almost make up for his awful long-term FA signings – especially pitchers because he can’t develop more then one or two of his own each year. But he gets around that by firing the pitching coach he hired each year.

There are at last a dozen Baseball Ops heads today that are better than him.

Luhnow might be a legitimate contender. Trash cans aside he built the Astros to where they are now.

I wonder if Brad Ausmus would fare better as a GM than as a manager?

Hi Don – I doubt that he IS unemployed; I would wager that he’s made a couple million at least since the suspension ended, contracting himself out as an advisor, and I would not be at all surprised if the Orioles were a, or the, client.

AHT- You’re probably right. I just meant he doesn’t currently hold a position in any teams front office, and that surprises me. I think Luhnow’s role in the evolution of talent evaluation has been overshadowed by the scandal.
