Andrew Benintendi To Undergo Hamate Surgery

By Darragh McDonald | September 4, 2022 at 10:55pm CDT

Yankees outfielder Andrew Benintendi broke the hook of his hamate bone and will require surgery, manager Aaron Boone tells Bryan Hoch of MLB.com. Benintendi is already on the 10-day injured list, having been placed there yesterday.

The club has not yet provided an estimated timeline for Benintendi’s recovery process, but it’s bound to be significant regardless given the time of year. There are just over four weeks remaining in the regular season schedule, which doesn’t leave much time for the outfielder to go through the process of recovering from the procedure and getting back into game shape. Despite their recent slump, the Yankees are still in a strong position to both make the playoffs and get a bye past the first round, as they are five games up on the Rays and 10 1/2 clear of the Central-leading Guardians. That would give Benintendi more time to return, especially if the Yankees can win a playoff round or two, but it’s still unclear if that’s in the cards. Hoch relays word from Benintendi himself, who says he’s still going to speak with some specialists but believes he could return before the end of the regular season.

Acquired from the Royals just prior to the deadline, Benintendi has hit .302/.371/.397 on the year between the two teams. That offensive production is 22% better than the league average hitter this year, as evidenced by his 122 wRC+. That solid campaign was put on hold Friday night, when Benintendi left in obvious pain after hurting himself on a swing.

In the past couple of games without Benintendi, the Yanks have used an outfield of Aaron Judge, Oswaldo Cabrera and Aaron Hicks, with other options like Estevan Florial, Marwin Gonzalez and Tim Locastro on the bench. Harrison Bader and Matt Carpenter could join the club down the line, but neither are especially close. Bader, acquired from the Cardinals at the trade deadline, is ramping up towards a rehab assignment. Carpenter went on the IL a few weeks ago with a fractured foot and still hopes to return at some point. But in the short term, the in-house options will probably have to do.

The Yankees seemed to be walking away with the AL East for much of the year, leading by as much as 15 1/2 games in July. A poor showing in recent weeks dropped their lead as low as four games coming into today, though they defeated the Rays to stretch it back out to five. That means the final weeks of the season are going to be much more important than it may have seemed not too long ago.

Just ask Tim Salmon….Final at bat in his career (swinging for home run #300) and he hits a long fly ball to the track…Mister #299. Cruel indeed.

Jumbo – My vote for cruelest moment is still an umpire’s blown call robbing Galarraga of a perfecto. And Galarraga handled it with class.

Funnily enough ANDRES Galarraga ended HIS career with 399 homers haha. I remember the incident with Joyce clearly…The next day Joyce apologized to him and was pretty broken up about it. Never seen an umpire cry until then. That was a tough one all around.

It seems to me that MLB’s policy not to change that to a perfect game in the record books despite everyone in the world, including Joyce, knowing that the out was made at first base, is a specimen of excessive bureaucratic inflexibility.

It was arguably even more of an accomplishment, a perfect game + if you will, because the runner had no business being on base, and Galarraga induced a ground out from the next batter, retiring 28 batters in a row.

I suspect it would be as much of a psychological benefit to Joyce as to Galarraga if they changed it to a perfect game + in the record books.

Can anyone tell me why we called up the “future Yankees SS” & #2 top prospect, who is a pure, defensively adept SS, and stuck him at 2B? Yet, Boone played the UTL guy (IKF) who has been struggling defensively (and offensively) at SS and moved Peraza off his only natural position?

Is Boone trying to recreate Gleyber Torres-level issues for this kid? Not to mention IKF made two errors with the first two balls hit to him…

Pauly said he wishes he could sit down with the hitters in the Yankees lineup – Boy, do I wish he could too…..

Without Judge the Yankees would be fighting for third right now, there is no doubt. Not solely base on his production, but his leadership – he’s their glue. The errors that Cashman has made could’ve built a juggernaut – and yes, one can cite hindsight, but these errors were pretty obvious when they occurred too, because the Yankees needed offense and they still do.

How are we surprised Donaldson hasn’t been able to repeat his younger seasons, for example? So, $50M for two years of .670 OPS? And, Hal used that excuse to say he spends money? And as his reasoning for not spending more? Or Hicks? Goodness, what a disaster he is. That’s $100M+ completely wasted on those poor players. Throw in DJL, who’s redundant, and we are up to $200M+ in completely wasted allocation of funds.

What could $200M have landed us? That pays a significant portion for Machado’s contract. Throw in the Stanton contract and that’s Machado and Harper. What would they look like with Machado & Harper in this lineup? How about the prospect personnel they traded at the past trade deadlines to acquire enough talent to stay competitive?

It just goes on and on – too little too late, consistently.

A few years back, I opined that the Angels were insane for promoting Adell, who was only 21 at the time. I suggested that a 43/10 K/W, with -0- HRs, was arguably the worst production in the PCL. Angel fans didn’t take kindly to that.

Then I suggested that promoting Marsh, with less than 100 AAA ABs was perhaps a bit premature. Well, they didn’t take kindly to that either.

The O’Hoppe trade was a real nice save on Marsh, but why don’t the Angels demote Adell to AAA, or maybe even AA, to learn how to hit?

Haha JoeB my friend, I thought the very same. As soon as I saw Adell get brought up a few years back I knew he wasn’t ready. He is not a big leaguer. Marsh is BARELY a big leaguer at the moment..I can’t emphasize “barely” enough. I gotta be honest, I am done with Adell…I want him off the Angel’s and far away from Anaheim. There I said it..

I’m not even giving up on Adell. But it should be obvious to everyone that he is floundering. The RS just sent Dalbec down, and he is pretty similar to Adell. This reminds me of a bad poker player, chasing cards all night, always hoping that, this time, it will be different. Maybe Minasian sees something I don’t, but since his last promotion, he has a .581 OPS with a 53/7 K/W. With a 39/3 in his last 31 games.

Demote him to AA and rebuild his swing.

In the immortal words of the Kinks: Stop your sobbing.

Here’s the umpire’s view of all Holmes’s pitches today. That last pitch coming in at 102MPH was too close to take, and from the ump’s view, it was a strike at the bottom of the zone.

          baseballsavant.mlb.com/gamefeed?date=9/4/2022&…

You’ll have to select Holmes in the dropdown menu of the list of today’s pitchers.

No, that’s baseball. When a final strike will cost your team the game, you foul off anything close until you get a pitch to hit or the pitcher throws an obvious ball out of the zone.

Fink is painfully correct. As a batter, you don’t EVER put you or your teams fate ultimately in the hands of the umpire. 2 strikes you go after anything close. That’s just a sad fact of life. It may not be “right,” though it stands true none the less.

@whyhayzee Why would it cost the Rays the game? It was two outs on a 3-2 pitch with first. They would have bases-loaded if it was called a ball still down by a run.

It cost them the game because the game ended. The call was wrong, the ball was completely out of the strike zone. The notion that he should have swung at a ball is just patently absurd. So are you supposed to swing if it’s within how many inches of the strike zone? You’re supposed to throw out everything about hitting because the ump might screw up the call? Are you freaking kidding me? So is the pitcher supposed to throw the ball deeper into the strike zone so the ump doesn’t screw up the call? Holy cow, it’s ridiculous “logic”. Play the game as if the umps are going to screw up?

          Holy cow.

Clip, when it rains it pours. Stanton now out with injury as well. That’s likely the end of his season again. I know he was not doing anything at all while he was in the lineup, but I am convinced his mere presence was at least helping the judge continue hitting his home runs at a historic pace by giving opposing pitchers pause. Who’s going to be backing up or behind judge now,no hit wonder big mouth Donaldson

Pink, when it rains it pours. Now Stanton is out with injury as well. so now where does the offense come from, other than judge, or at least the protection for judge, even though Stanton wasn’t hitting much, eventually he would have, and in the meantime he was still offering some protection to Aaron Judge by his mere presence in the lineup.

DR: Yeah, you are right, pitchers still had to be careful because of Stanton’s capability. And, just to be clear, I like Stanton, I really do. He’s great for the Yanks in the postseason usually, and he’s got an incredible bat. He’s also decent on defense. They got him one year removed from MVP status. But, they needed a LH bat. They needed more than just another RF. They needed more…for what they paid Stanton despite his deal acceptable.

But, we didn’t need Stanton. Just like we didn’t need DJ. They were luxuries for the roster, and very expensive ones at that. The team had other true needs but spend precious resources on those two because Cashman felt like he got a good deal. That doesn’t work when building a championship team. You can’t afford to throw away $200-300M in unnecessary player salaries unless you’re also going to blow past the CBT. Otherwise, you end up like the Angels.

I think we are all facing the hard reality that this team may be exactly what we thought it was when many assessed it during the offseason – a non-competitive playoff roster. I believe Hal & Cashman figured the fan base will start to accept playoffs or a division title as the new barometer for success; boy are they wrong.

You really believe that this is some mystical cosmic payback when he was one of 10 (not three) Royals placed on the restricted list for that series?

“Benintendi is joined by infielder Whit Merrifield, catcher MJ Melendez, first baseman/outfielder Hunter Dozier, starting pitcher Brad Keller, starting pitcher Brady Singer, outfielder Michael A. Taylor, outfielder Kyle Isbel, reliever Dylan Coleman and catcher Cam Gallagher. All 10 players landed on the restricted list, which requires players to forfeit service time and salary for the four-game series.”

So I guess we can expect Merrifield, who also got vaccinated and now plays for the Blue Jays, to suffer a season-ending injury too, right? Maybe you should put down a bet on that, if you’re one of those “some people” who believe what you’re implying. They’ll take bets on anything in Vegas.

The flu vaccine doesn’t prevent infection; it strengthens the body’s immune response to lessen the severity of an infection.

          cdc.gov/flu/vaccines-work/vaccineeffect.htm

That’s what the Covid vaccines do, too.

There are few vaccines that provide what’s called “sterilizing immunity” that entirely prevents a pathogen from infecting a person.

          sciencealert.com/few-vaccines-actually-prevent-inf…

It’s to be expected that most Americans who haven’t gone to medical school don’t know much about vaccines. What’s bad, though, is that people spread disinformation about vaccines through the media, either out of ignorance or deliberate deceit. Those who, out of ulterior motives, knowingly spread lies about vaccines are accomplices to homicide.

‘Conservative treatment requires immobilization with casting for 6 weeks, followed by an additional 4-6 weeks of physical therapy. If the injury is treated surgically with hook excision, the patient can start physical therapy immediately, without limitations, and can return to full activity within 6-8 weeks.’

If that estimate of recovery time is correct, he won’t be back this year.

Fink, I actually suffered a similar injury but it was a different carpel bone in my wrist. It was the result of landing on my hand. I went to a one of those Medimerge places that my nurse sister-in-law calls “Doc in a Box”. X-rays showed nothing so I went about my business. It was in fact broken, so I can understand the lack of clarity in this situation. But once you know it’s broken and have the surgery? He won’t be back this year. And depending how aggressive the surgeon is, there’s a longer recovery. They can fix it so it’s no longer a problem or they can fix it so you still have full motion. In my case, I can only bend my wrist a certain amount. As I was playing baseball at the time, I can wish that they gave me back full motion but it would have been a higher risk of re-injuring it. So I went with the safe route.

Why does he believe that hamate bone injuries are real? Doctors and hospitals just trying to get rich, right?

“Doctors are greedy and lying and faked a global pandemic and want to inject you with computer chips but sure, here’s a knife, put me under and go to town, Doc.”

Seriously possible, in deed. That said, the Rays look just as beat up as the Yanks. Possibly both looking up at Toronto in 2 weeks? IE. outside of losing Ryu (sp?), they seem pretty healthy at this stage of the season! Big series starts today for the Jays in Baltimore. My Os are gonna have quite the challenge, err opportunity, to keep relevant.

Florial should start every remaining game through the end of the season….Hicks is toast and it won’t matter whether he gets at bats or not, still the same result…..give Florial a chance to show what he’s got.

I agree, but I predict that they will not give florial a shot, as per usual. Cashman once he has something against you, that’s it for your career, at least with the Yankees . Same thing for Miggy, although not great, he’s got to be better than some of the other options out here, but yet you hardly ever see him and when they bring him up he is immediately sent back down. Hicks at this point is a minor league or worse he should not even be put on a baseball field he’s so bad.

I’m not sure why everyone is so high on Florial. He’s had 20ABs in the majors this season and he’s mustered 1 single so far (.050 BA). Sure it’s a small sample size but l don’t see what he has done is his career to date that Yankees fans would want him playing every day. He has been good at AAA this season, but AAA is a lot different than the majors and he’s only 1 year removed from hitting .219 in AAA as well. He’s the Yankees version of Jeter Downs if you ask me.

Dorothy: It’s not that everyone is so high on Florial; rather, it is that they’ve given 4 years to Hicks, who has performed terribly. The consensus, therefore, is: why not give Florial a full season to adjust because he’s better than Hicks defensively, and he won’t hurt you any more than Hicks will offensively. Yet, they’ve given Hicks an unlimited leash, with destructive results to the team.

Look at Riley, Hoerner, and a bunch of other newbies that needed a year, plus, to adjust. Florial’s indicators in the minors reflect that he can adjust to pitching if given time – time they refuse to give him. But he gets to fly balls Hicks doesn’t even come close to.

Too many fans don’t understand that. They say it is “making excuses”. But Schilling said that 15 years ago. When asked who would come in 1st, he said ‘whichever team has the most starts from their regular rotation.

It’s a stunning contrast that I don’t know if I’ve quite seen. Incredible health and an incredible record, followed by never-ending injuries and a horrible record. I pegged them for 95 wins at the start of the year. Now I wonder if they’ll make 90!

Brett Gardner states at his phone.

I wouldn’t be optimistic. Seems like an aggressive schedule is six weeks, and that depends on if there’s any significant soft tissue damage. I wouldn’t rush it if I was in his shoes, err, cast.

Bad timing for both the Yankees and Benentendi. Such is life…and baseball.

It’s a joke, I get it, but I’d take Gardy over Hicks every day of the week. Hicks is embarrassing. At least Gardy is committed and wants to win.

Did Boone really blame the fans/media (AKA: “outside noise”) as the reason this team is failing?! Are you kidding me? He wants Kansas City Royals style fan patience and understanding, so the multi-million dollar players don’t have their feelings hurt for having the worst stretch of baseball in 54 years?

I’m becoming more convinced he is not only a bad manager of the team in-game, but likely adversely affecting their losing mentality as well. They need a Joe Torre and they ended up with a helicopter mom. And, Cashman thinks this guy is one of the top managers in baseball?

Right again clip. Boone is no leader, as his four years at the helm have demonstrated. He’s more of a cheerleader, and when things go bad he is clueless. About gardner , I agree, I was happy when he did not return but he’s gotta be better than some of the options we have now, and it is very least he could make the pitcher work with long at bats. And I really wonder how long it would take him to get ready, he may already have been working out and in game shape we don’t know that. wouldn’t that be awesome if he could swoop in and save the day, although I doubt it, it’s just a pipe dream. Is Shane Spencer still around?

Yes and Boone or Cashman, have some nerve blaming the Yankees fans. They know what is in store for them when they play here. if they don’t want the spotlight then don’t come here, that goes for boone too. Maybe he will retire or they can kick him upstairs somewhere or in the booth, where he could do less damage. Because they’re certainly not going to fire him and take on his salary.

And I don’t feel sorry for these multi million dollars spoiled brat ball players, who might be getting their feelings hurt, if they’re taken out of the lineup, or being booed for what is unacceptable and atrocious play. They don’t have to take the millions if they are not equipped or cut out for it. The whole look, and they play over the last month plus, is just shameful. They are looking like minor league or little league players, not major leaguers.

Too bad — Benintendi is one of the few Yanks to hit consistently against Houston. Pretty much the only reason to watch them now is to see how many homers Judge ends up with. Otherwise, their “magical season” ended at the All-Star break.

Anyone tell me why we haven’t reached out to Brett Gardner yet? Guy can still play defense and is a better option than any of the minor league players probably. He can at least put the ball in play? Is it to late ?

He’ll need at least three weeks to vaguely get up to game speed, and then he won’t be eligible for the postseason. They’d get a week of play from him. Gardy is effectively retired.

Chris, I completely agree. See my comment just above this. Boone is damaging this team far more than he is helping them, imho, both on and off the field. And, by extension, Cashman.

Yeah, the lineup today almost made me sick to my stomach. I mean, our cleanup hitter hits .207 with a .670 OPS, and Torres has one of the highest OPSs on the field with a below-MLB-average-.708? And this is our NYY World Series contending, $235M roster? With Tim Locastro as our starting LF, really? How embarrassing…for the entire franchise.

Then, Donaldson watches a 330FT warning track ball and when he finally runs, he runs the Yankees out of the first inning. But, no consequences, of course. Boone should’ve benched him right then. Not just for his pitiful play, but to make an emphatic statement that he won’t tolerate less than 100% effort. It’s no wonder Hicks jogs after fly balls.
