Don Mattingly Won’t Return As Marlins Manager In 2023

By Darragh McDonald | September 25, 2022 at 11:02pm CDT

Don Mattingly and the Marlins have mutually agreed that 2022 will be his final season as the club’s manager, according to a press release from the team.

The team released a statement from chairman and principal owner Bruce Sherman as well as Mattingly. Sherman’s portion reads: “We are fortunate to have had Don Mattingly leading our team on the field over the last seven years. He has represented the Marlins, our players, our fans, and the South Florida community with unmatched dignity and pride. Over the course of our recent conversations with Don, we both agreed not to pursue a new contract for the 2023 season and that the time is right for a new voice to lead our clubhouse. He will depart with the most wins and most games managed in franchise history and we are proud of Don’s many accomplishments, including winning National League Manager of the Year in 2022 when he guided the Marlins to the postseason after a 16-year absence.”

Don Mattingly } Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY SportsMattingly’s portion of the press release reads: “Today I am announcing that I will not be seeking a contract extension with the Miami Marlins. After meeting with Mr. Sherman and discussing with Kim Ng, all parties agreed that it was time for a new voice for the organization. I am proud and honored to have served as manager of the Marlins for the past seven years and have enjoyed my experiences and relationships I’ve developed within the organization. I look forward to spending time with my family in Evansville, and to any future endeavors.”

Mattingly, 61, got his first taste of managing with the Dodgers from 2011 to 2015 before coming over to the Marlins prior to the 2016 season. Of course, a lot has changed for the franchise during that time. The Fish were near-ish to .500 in Mattingly’s first two seasons as skipper, finishing 79-82 in 2016 and then 77-85 the following year.

It was towards the end of that 2017 campaign that the club was sold from Jeffrey Loria to a group headed by Derek Jeter and Bruce Sherman. The new ownership group immediately set out to slash the team’s budget, trading away Giancarlo Stanton, Marcell Ozuna and Christian Yelich that winter and J.T. Realmuto one year later. That unsurprisingly led the team into a stretch of poor results, finishing in the basement of the NL East in 2018 and 2019. They surprised with a 31-29 finish in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, with Mattingly winning Manager of the Year in the process, but then were back to being bad again in the two subsequent campaigns. They went 67-95 last year and currently sport a record of 63-89 here in 2022.

Those trades landed several prospects, including Sandy Alcantara, Zac Gallen, Daniel Castano, Lewis Brinson, Monte Harrison, Isan Diaz, Sixto Sanchez, Jorge Alfaro and others. Very few of those players found success in Miami, however, with many of them having since moved on to other organizations. The club still felt like it had enough young pitching talent to take an aggressive approach this offseason, bringing in Avisail Garcia, Jorge Soler, Jacob Stallings and Joey Wendle for 2022. Unfortunately, all of those players have had disappointing seasons, meaning the post-rebuild era still seems illusive.

Mattingly currently sports a record of 437-583 while at the helm in Miami, though it would be difficult to place the blame squarely on him for all that losing given that the franchise has been intentionally bad for much of that stretch. It’s also probably not what Mattingly had in mind when he first joined the team, as the exciting bunch of young and talented MLB players that were present when he was first hired were sent packing in exchange for even younger prospects. Given that his departure has been reported as a mutual decision, it doesn’t seem like he was particularly enthused about continuing with the ongoing rebuild efforts. His statement indicates that he will go home to his family in Indiana, though it’s unclear if he would be interested in or pursue any other opportunities in baseball.

The Marlins will head into the offseason with much work to do this offseason in order to improve for 2023, but now they will have to add a managerial search to the list. General manager Kim Ng and her staff will be competing with the Blue Jays, Phillies, Angels and Rangers, who all fired their managers this year, though some of them could potentially retain their interim skippers into the future.

Craig Mish and Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reported on Mattingly’s departure prior to the official team announcement.

He was such a great manager this year that the Marlins let him go. Probably couldn’t afford that massive bump in pay that would come with that award.

Without a doubt Nevin is the absolute worst manager in baseball. He has zero concept of how to manage a pitching staff. Zero.

He’s not just a bad manager (if he is, I haven’t watched him much). Nevin was a terrible third base coach. The unsung hero of the Yankees coaching staff is Luis Rojas, their new third base coach (Mets former manager). He’s done really, really well at simply…doing his job and *not* getting runners thrown out at home.

dirk – More often than not, a mid-season managerial change creates a spark that ignites the team. The fact that it didn’t for the Angels is proof that Maddon wasn’t the problem.

Not ironically, 3 of the past 4 Red Sox championship teams were led by a manager in his first year with the Red Sox. I’m really hoping they get a new manager next year, and I’d love to have it be Mattingly.

Clipper, the Halos are just so messed up all the time, I have nothing better to do than kick ideas around and say “what if” “what if.” Just always so many things with them. I see bright spots here and there too…At this point, I am hoping they can get good enough to get “lucky.” Kinda like in 2002.

Trumbo, I hope you guys get a really proactive, wise owner in there that takes that team to the next level. Some of the Angels moves demonstrated the willingness to go for it all (Pujols, Trout, Ohtani, Rendon) -while others are just…confounding (like what seemed to me to be the Angels giving up in the left side of the IF this year). Keep in mind, that’s my nescient perspective, as I haven’t closely followed the Halos this year.

Angels have to be one of the most desired franchises, I’d imagine, if only for location. Throw in Trout and there’s sure to be some high-level interest from prominent power brokers.

I’ve never been to Anaheim but from everything I read/hear it’s an absolutely beautiful venue.

          Clipper,

People talk about the stadium being old and “dated.” I assure you that is a major fallacy and misnomer…I love it there and it is super easy to gallivant around the park to whatever area you wish. On the other hand, I would sure like to check out fancy shmancy Petco Park down in SD, that stadium looks like a lot of fun….The allure of the Angels franchise is definitely huge in my eyes as well. If others don’t know what “allure” I speak of that is ok. Anyway, I would hope as you say, that whomever decides to buy the club is rabid about WINNING and FAST! What the Dodgers did with their “ownership group” is nothing short of incredible. I truly don’t see Trout or Ohtani going anywhere. If Rendon can get back to snuff, Walsh and Adell screw their heads on…Fletcher and Ward come through….I see offense. We need more pitching. Another bat or 2, 2 starters, 2 relievers, then just maybe….

That’s fine but it is clearly not the consensus of the fan base. I live in the greater LA media market so I’m well aware of talk around the team. You can’t escape it, radio, TV, the newspapers, Twitter – I didn’t say one way or the other of it’s fair, just what it is. I don’t care one way or the other as I’m not a Dodgers fan.

Just like this site does! Am I right or am I right? This Trumbo dude is going on about how the Braves are incompetent in their handling of pitchers and also saying he lives in the shadow of Chavez Ravine yet doesn’t know that Tony Gonsolin and David Price are currently on the injured list and have been for quite some time.

Unless the Trumbo account goes on a deleting spree it’s all quite visible and readily accessible on this and other posts here.

Going by what you are saying, when was the last time a manager of a team almost 60 games above .500 got this much hate?

Talking up coaches for two of the highest paid teams in the history of the game doesn’t say much. Dodgers basically field an all star team as well as the Yankees so Shouldn’t take to much managing to win.

Soooo basically what your saying is outside of trout and ohtani if you could just get a new team together you may stand a chance. The best thing for Anaheim to do is to rebuild, but systems for ohtani and trout and get hauls never seen before back. Ohtani is coming to free agency and surely no way he resigns to that dumpster fire. Trout is stuck unless he demands a trade. Rendon is injury prone. Adell is overrated. Clean slate is needed. Hurts for the fans but has to be done.

McKeon came in and helped build something there before so why not again? He’s no spring chicken but they could do worse. A proven winner.

The comment “the game has passed him by” is just a bunch of hooey. For every Tony LaRussa, whose White Sox have been underwhelming this year, there is a Buck Showalter, whose Mets are playing great. The game hasn’t “passed by” any old manager/former manager. The bottom line is managers can only do so much with the players, talented or otherwise, they are given.

It’s not just analytics, and yes, the game has passed Mattingly by.

Sure, he was given a terrible position player roster, but he hasn’t done much with it. Those players haven’t improved much since he got there. They run out and do the same thing year-after-year.

Strategy is only a part of being a manager. Todays players have to be treated a certain way. It’s a combination of being coddled, told they’re appreciated – yet at the same time being firm in expecting them to play smart baseball, hustle, and learn/grow from their mistakes.

Pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre Jr. has kept that team afloat the past 2-3 years.

And don’t Buck Showalter me. It’s like saying long-term contracts usually work out – just look at Max Schurzer. The exception that proves the rule is not normalcy.

And further, game strategy these days comes at least as much from the front office as it does from the dugout. Fans see only the guy with the number on his back and give him all the credit or blame when the strategy does or doesn’t work out. But either way he is far from the only person responsible. I give Mattingly credit for managing a team for so long with so little resources.

I’m of the thinking that some teams may want to actually try “old-school” managers once again, as the game now changes again to a somewhat more 1980s-ish look with the emphasis (possible) to run again and the new shift rules. Analytics is going to have a place, they always have to an extent, but this may be the time to REALLY explore the blending of the two.

Boone’s postseason W-L% is .500. Mattingly’s is .417, and three of those postseason teams he managed in LA had the top payroll in baseball.

Donnie’s a great guy by all accounts, but Manager of the Year in a 60-game season isn’t the same as making it through 162 games.

The extremely overrated Aaron Boone’s overall managerial W-L% is .604, ranking him 10th all-time. Mattingly’s with the high-priced Dodgers in his three years when they owned the top payroll was .572. So, eliminating the seven seasons when Donnie managed the low-budget Marlins and the two LA seasons when the Dodgers weren’t tops in payroll, his managerial W-L% of .572 would rank him 24th among managers all-time. That’s a nice record, but it takes a lot of beneficial cherry-picking to get him there.

One major challenge is that they’re in the NL East. That’s not an easy division to be able to build a young winning team. It’s taken the Orioles like a decade to start winning again in the similar AL East. Lot of money and media in both of those divisions.

Thinking of the NL East as some super-division because of this year is also a little much. Maybe it plays out that the Braves, Mets, and Phillies stay good but that’s recency bias.

Also the schedules are gonna be much more balanced going forward after this year.

With what they have on the table, Marlins should at least be with a winning record. Their rotation is talented, maybe even the best in the division when healthy. They are just inexperienced but the ceiling for great starters is there.

If Boone doesn’t make it through the postseason, which is quite likely given the state of the pitching staff, I suppose they might pivot to Mattingly. But I doubt it.

Donnie failed in three postseasons with the Dodgers when they had the highest payroll in baseball. Why would you expect him to do better in New York than in laid-back LA?

Yeah, that’s very true, Fink. Boone is also the first manager in history to go to the postseason his first five seasons in said position. But, that’s a tad bit misleading, imho, because he also came in at exactly the right time & with a top-tier payroll team.

Honestly, and I’ve said this before, it’s really hard to pin down LeBooner’s management. It’s hard to discern what decisions he’s responsible for because of the ever present blending of FOs with their manager’s decisions.

We can only base our opinions off of his performance record overall, which is really good; his postseason success, which is not good; and his in-game decisions (BP, for example), which is lacking.

I’m not sure about Donnie…did he fail because he’s not good? Did he fail because he’s born & bred Yankees, and therefore structured for success in that culture/environment only? Realistically, if you look at his mentors: Torre, Roberts, & Showalter (when Donnie played), he’s got the requisite training one should need to be successful in NY as a manager. Whether he’s got the skill is a question that would be answered only by the results of his managerial tenure there.

Who knows? Maybe we’d get Donnie back & we would all miss Boone…. Yeah, no, that’s going too far.

But maybe it isn’t reasonable to expect every ballplayer to have a thick enough skin to deal with random fans on the street expressing their feelings about them. So if you do that maybe the problem isn’t so much about saying how you feel, maybe the problem is actually how you feel.

On Gallo, I got the idea he was saying he spent a lot of time in his NYC apartment (large or small, who cares?) because he was being accosted by Yankee fans on the street so often. Maybe he is a little quirky, but nobody should be penalized for having human feelings.

To Mattingly’s surprise, the Marlins informed him that they’ve mutually agreed he won’t return in 2023.

More seriously, they’ll go with a cheaper option, and one who is Ng’s pick. Credit to Jeter for giving her a shot, but I wonder how much real control she had while Jeter was there. Next season will be her first full year when it’s clear she is running all baseball ops and decision making, starting this offseason.

For the Yankees and their fans, it’s nice to have Jeter and Posada back, even if for ceremonial duties, but having both captains return would be good. Just not sure that’s in the cards for Mattingly. He’s 61, not a kid, but he’s also only 61. Some teams have been gravitating back toward experienced field managers, as they should. Wouldn’t surprise me if he lands another managerial job.

Donnie is my all time favorite but is relatively undistinguished as a manager. If the Yanks were a juggernaut and you wanted some to keep the ship sailing then ok but in reality he brings nothing to the table that suggest he’d out perform Boone. Plus Boone is fully integrated with the FO co-manager system and I’m not sure that’s Donnie’s thing. A Jeter/Mattingly take over us just eye candy a not based on anything substantial. Plus I’d rather not watch either of them fail in NY

100%. If you think Yankees fans hate Hal and Cashman now, imagine how they would react when Mattingly would inevitably get fired. Neither Hal or Cashman want to deal with that. Although it wouldn’t be as bad as when Judge signs elsewhere.

Yeah, I don’t see it happening either. Boone and Mattingly strike me as similar. Regarded as good with the players, good with the clubhouse and with the media, but not great on-field tacticians. I always feel the Yankees are at a disadvantage when Boone is managing against an experienced manager, and that adds up over 162 games.

Cashman runs everything, and he has his analytics team feeding lineups, dictating situations and pitching changes and bullpen order before the games start. In an effort to gain an edge, they lose an edge. Last year, Michael Kay on ESPN local asked Cashman a fan question, wondering if Boone could override the analytics team. Cashman paused, and then said, “yes, but he better be right.” Yikes. Talk about confirming every Yankees fans suspicions. No way a manager can react properly in game with that oversight.

Mattingly has dealt with heavy analytics-driven organizations since he was with the Dodgers, but indications are it didn’t go well at the end, hence they put in Dave Roberts, their own version of Aaron Boone. Mattingly is too high profile for Cashman, and Mattingly like Girardi would fight some of the analytics driven moves. Cashman won’t have that now. This is his current blueprint, and he’s sticking with it, which is why Boone came back and they passed on Buck.

Jeter can’t replace Cashman. Running baseball ops is a 24/7, grueling, get-your-hands dirty kind of job. Jeter didn’t have that job. He always had a GM to do the hard work. Honestly, I don’t know what job Jeter could have with the Yankees.

I’m thinking that with baseball (somewhat) trending back to what I would consider more of an 1980s style (more running game, less shifts) if a team like the Royals, team in a pitcher-friendly park, built for speed, gap type hitters, wouldn’t be a good fit for Mattingly. Or, a team that’s a little more flexible in their analytics.

This article failed to mention the death of Jose Fernandez in 2016. That was the domino that lead to the team getting sold and trading off Stanton, Ozuna and the rest. Mattingly had to deal with all that and he did a fine job.
Leaving out that key piece of information doesn’t put his time with the Marlins in context. He had to deal with a lot of crap and it wasn’t his fault the payroll went way down. The Marlins have a good young core with Jazz Chisholm and good pitching. Miami is going to be a sought after place to manage as they come out of their rebuild.

Did the Marlins’ press release actually say he was manager of the year in 2022 or is that a mistake in the article? It goes on to say he was manager of the year in 2020 so I don’t know who screwed up. I am guessing it is a mistake in the article. It would look bad if the Marlins said he was manager of the year the same year he got fired when the award hasn’t even handed out. Then again, Joe Girardi was manager of the year for the Marlins the same year he was axed.

Legendary ballplayer and by all accounts, a great guy, but a mediocre manager. The game has changed a lot since his 80’s heyday, but his managerial strategies and tactics are straight out of that era.

Perhaps a year off and some time to reflect might be best for him. After all, it’s never too late to reinvent yourself…even at 61.

Great player but awful manager. I can’t see how Yankees fans would want Mattingly over Boone, it makes no sense. I felt the same when the Mets hired Beltran, terrible higher and im glad he got fired (I did not want Luis Rojas as a manager back then either, felt like a slap in the face when they hired him over Girardi and Showalter because Brodie Vanwagenen wanted a guy who was spineless to be his yes man). The Jeter Mattingly combo in Miami was a disaster, don’t see why Yankee fans would want Jeter in their front office either. If I were the Marlins, I’d try and pry Alex Cora away from the RedSox. Hes really good with the spanish players and the Marlins are just about 80 to 90% spanish

There are some very poorly run organizations inspirits but the Marlins are in the top 3 for sure. Don should get a new job without an issue. He is a good manager who deserves better from the organization and this is coming from a Mets fan. I love to see him latch on with the Royals who are a team that is only a few players away from being a real contender.

Mattingly doesn’t strike me as the type of person to make calls like that for two reasons:

          1) He’s competitive and wants to win but has always played the game the right way; and

          2) Mattingly’s own HOF career was ruined by injuries, which, by all accounts, cost him multiple World Series titles.

I just don’t see Mattingly targeting a top-tier player at the top of his game, especially for no discernible reason.

Well, there are certain players that are pitched inside purposely, and therefore hit more often too. Look at the Mets – the entire team set a record this year for HBPs. But, Rizzo is hit repeatedly too, by certain teams, and even certain pitchers, much more often.

I think it’s just the game, pitching styles, and analytics that contribute to it. But, I guess we truly never know because we aren’t in the clubhouse. I certainly hope that’s not the case, for sure.

The only way I can remotely see Mattingly taking Boone’s job would be if Cashman got fired too, and I think that’s extremely unlikely. This year, Yankee Stadium ranks 4th in total attendance, 3rd in average attendance, and 1st in both in the AL.

I suppose there’s a tiny chance they might hire Mattingly as a buffer against fan outrage if they plan to let Judge walk. We’ll see.

Manager for marlins for life, not expected to do much with the squad given, drafting and devloping players in the minors is under the GM as is signing free agents with ownership approval of spending, , as the marlins are not interested in, at least not THEIR dollars..
But one winning season with the playoffs in the shortened season, not much progress beyond that.

Mattingly will land somewhere. The Angels immediately come to mind, the Rangers too. If George were alive he would be having Mattingly’s jersey ready to go in front of Boone to “motivate” him, sadly Hal doesn’t seem to mind playoffs over championships.

As for the Marlins, James Rowson is probably the in-house front runner to replace Mattingly. Miguel Cairo could be an outside option if he doesn’t replace LaRussa with the White Sox.i wonder if “Mr. Marlin” Jeff Conine would be interested?

I’ll never forget the day at work (a casino in Reno) when I saw Joe Torre’s face on the big screen with the word Dodgers. I don’t remember if we knew Mattingly was coming right then and there, but I recall being very excited at getting a few years of Joe followed by a legendary player who supposedly learned how to run a game from the man himself. First time I saw a post-loss Mattingly press conference I lost all hope and respect for him as a manager.

I watched every single Yankee’s game this year. Boone’s decision-making process is flawed. He leaves pitchers in too long and can’t properly use his bench. A lot of his poor decisions were covered by phenomenal play by the players in the early part of the season. When injuries started mounting up, he was exposed as a complete fraud, and they nearly lost a 15 game lead. I don’t think it is being a cry baby to expect that a world-class organization would have a world-class manager.

Kind of surprised and not surprised by this.

Mattingly is an okay manager who will not hurt or help a team. That to me is the type of manager you want unless you can get one of the rare ones that actually make a difference in win-improvement.

The Marlins issues the last two years have been as follows:

Bullpen that can’t hold leads. They have not found a lead that they can’t blow. The problem has been a lack of a Closer that Ng and the front office has failed or neglected to bring in the last two offseasons. One of the main reasons they have so many 1-run losses is because teams don’t score any additional runs after the Marlins blow the lead or they can’t score any more because it’s a walk-off. The front office seems to think the problem is solely the offense. Not the case when there have been many games when the Marlins have 4 and 5-run leads going into the last couple of innings, and the bullpen still blows the game for a 1-run loss and another high-leverage failure.

Hitting is a problem, but the second biggest problem behind the lack of a Closer. To create this problem, the middle of the order has had multiple factors to failing. 1) Bryan Anderson has done nothing the last two years due to either being a mess at the plate in the little amount of time he’s played while he’s spent the bulk of these two season on the IL. 2) Garrett Cooper is not a core player, so I’m not sure what is the obsession with him there other than Gary Denbo loved him as one of his guys. 3) Marlins needed just one corner OF last year, but added two, and both failed for different reasons (Garcia has stunk it up; Soler has been out a great deal). Most intelligent Marlins fans would’ve preferred some of that money being used for a Closer as we would’ve been happy with letting Bryan de la Cruz and Jesus Sanchez man the other OF spots, with the wait for Bleday, Encarnacion, and Burdick coming in at some point. Then, if we were in contention at the deadline, once we saw the struggles from them, we could’ve plugged in pieces to replace them. 4) Aguilar stunk it up this year. 5) Stallings stunk it up worse than expected. 6) young players were not protected and were kind of pressured (Sanchez, de la Cruz, Fortes, Jazz).

The combination of Jeter, Denbo and Ng have had mixed results the last couple of seasons with deals. Now Ng is the only one remaining, so all Marlins fans’ eyes will be on her this offseason, and expecting results because there will be no fallguys or excuses accepted. She and her team will be solely responsible for picking her own manager and filling the player/roster gaps this offseason. A third consecutive failed offseason, and calls for her firing will start next year. She made this a harsh reality when she failed to move pieces like Cooper, Okert, Wendle, Aguilar and even Berti and Rojas at the deadline for any young pieces just to clear the path for the young players to come in. She only made the one trade after getting calls for all of the others mentioned here. Time for her to show that she’s got the goods…period. No excuses.

Marlins needs in addition to manager:

    Retain Stottlemyre as Pitching Coach.

Get a Closer. This is #1 in importance.

Get a stabilizing bat for the middle of the order…most importantly in the infield. Look at 3B and SS.

    Move on from Cooper.

Test the market for Berti, Wendle and Rojas. Move at least one and keep at least one for the bench. A second move would be determined by potential return.

Be prepared to use Bryan Anderson as a pivot player. He has to earn the right to keep a starting role, but he’d be in my secondary plans while I bring in a 3B.

Remember when the Yankees hired clueless Joe who had a bad managerial record at the time. And then the championships came. Mattingly could come to NY and maybe the same thing happens. Who knows?
