Cubs Outright Esteban Quiroz, Jared Young

By Darragh McDonald | November 11, 2022 at 2:53pm CDT

The Cubs announced that infielders Esteban Quiroz and Jared Young have cleared waivers and been outrighted to Triple-A Iowa.

Quiroz, 31 in February, played in the Mexican League for years and didn’t sign with an affiliated ball club until he was almost 26. He spent time in the organizations of the Red Sox, Padres and Rays before coming to the Cubs in the Harold Ramirez trade. He was selected to the big league roster in September and was able to make his MLB debut as the season was winding down. He hit .275/.370/275 for a wRC+ of 95 over 14 games in that brief audition.

Young, 27, was selected by the Cubs in the 15th round of the 2017 draft. Like Quiroz, he was promoted to the big leagues in September and got a brief MLB audition. He got into six games and hit .263/.364/.368 for a wRC+ of 113 in that small sample. He walked in 13.6% of his plate appearances but struck out in 31.8% of them.

Players have the right to reject outrights assignments if they have three years of MLB service time or have previously been outrighted in their career. Since neither player qualifies, they will remain in the Cubs’ organization as depth but without taking up a roster spot.

Sox can fleece Cubs again by giving you Grandal. Even up. Cubs pick up Heyward salary.

Nice! I love it when White Sox talk about trades they won vs games… win a playoff series then boast about how you won a trade.

Hahn made exactly one trade where exactly one player is actually doing well.

Leave it alone, bleed. We all know that they were on the way to winning the World Series in 21 when a guy named Kimbrel was acquired and pretty much helped derail the stretch run.

Sort of like getting that last piece of the puzzle a few years back——Shields.

For every good trade there are usually two or three that just don’t seem to work out as planned.

I’ll never understand the Kimbrell acquisition. He’s a closer. The Sox already had one of the best in bb in Hendriks. Why did Hahn think they needed two closers?

Yeah, like the Dodgers were going to win this year?? You are counting the title without actually winning it. There is no giarantee they were going to win the WS.

Need someone to blame? Blame their front office for THEIR decision to make the trade. Blame the manager for mis-using Kimbrel.

Don’t blame the Cubs for the White Sux failures.

The Cubs will cut Heyward soon enough. They are probably hoping they can find someone who wants him and that someone is a place Heyward wants to go. Yeah I know it’s a fools errand but at least they’ll save the Veterans minimum next year when he signs someplace.

The Cubs don’t have to trade Heyward, the can DFA him and if he signs a major league deal somewhere they will be on the hook for the league minimum. Perhaps they are seeing if they cannot trade him and save a bit more but even if a team had interest they would probably just wait for the inevitable…

I almost wonder if the Cubs will just hang onto him all off-season as long as they have a spot for him on the 40 man… it will cost them the same either way. The Cubs seem to respect the heck out of Heyward regardless of his poor performance on the field, IF they have the room, keeping him on so he can have access to Cubs medical staff and whatever other perks he has a player.

As of 11/12 the Cubs have 35 guys on the 40 man-And..

Heuer, Roberts, and Canario who will all hit the 60 day as soon as allowed.

    Then there were 32

    Heyward- Gone
    Vizcaino- Never shown me anything
    Rivas- Dead weight
    Ortega- Dead weight
Marquez- Cubs have 10 LH better than him
Amaya- Cut him and if someone wants to claim a C who hasn’t caught in 3 years, Be my guest-Please
Leiter Jr- Did well as a short guy, Might be worth a shot. Starter out of the question.
Mckinstry- My gut says the Dodgers don’t cut anybody good but they seem to like him for some reason. He can go if and when they sign somebody better-which shouldn’t be hard.

Still lots of dead weight that can go when some FA’s start rolling in.

These are make or break years for Marquez and Amaya. It’s worth giving them one more shot to see if they can be useful. They’re not that far away from MLB if they rebound.

Vizcaino is still on the restricted list.

Ortega might be non-tendered next week. The rest are DFA candidates when needed.

So you want a C who, Had TJ surgery and last year got a Lisfranc Injury while not even catching? Lisfranc injuries are awesome for a guy who squats for a living don’t ya think? If he can’t catch he has no other purpose so I say move on. As for Marquez like I said the Cubs have way better LH’s in the system. Wicks, Herz, Ferris, 2 Littles, Drew Gray, Horn, Martin, Carraway just off the top of my head. He’s not worth a 40 man spot anymore.

The Cubs will protect Marquez and Amaya… I could Rivas being re-assigned/out-righted.

Ortega is interesting. He’s a decent enough back up center fielder and since the Cubs currently have no one else to play center, most likely will be tendered a contract.

I’m not sure where Roberts is on his recovery but he could be a guy they attempt to “sneak through” waivers.

Heyward, Vizcaino are no brainers. Velasquez is another guy who could be re-assigned. Rucker could be a trade candidate.

The Cubs will be in on a C this off season. Either Murphy or Jansen would be my preference so Amaya will be irrelevant. If they get one of those 2 guys, then Gomes, New Guy and Higgins are solid. After next year they can see if Gomes has another year left until either Ballesteros, Opitz or Aliendo are ready. A injured C who hasn’t even caught in 3 years doesn’t really appeal to me.

I wouldn’t mind seeing the Cubs seek a reunion with Givens and Chafin. Offer them 2 year deals guaranteed and that should bring them back. Givens has always been under rated and under appreciated in my opinion. A 2 year deal should make them come back and that would make them harder to dump at the deadline which is what they probably want. Wouldn’t cost a ton of money and they are both good options. As for Robertson I’m out. I think they can do better, Even in house. Estrada, Rodriguez, even Givens can close once in awhile.

Closer duty most likely will go to Hughes and potentially Huerer when he returns from the IL. Alzolay I think can be used in high leverage situations given the situation (not facing lefties) and then you Thompson and Wesneski as bullpen options since Hoyer seems pretty set on adding arms.

I found his presser interesting, “we all saw what happens when pitching runs out”… yeah a bunch of guys stepped up and pitches amazing in the second half.

That’s why I think it’s important to get A Chafin like guy. It gives you way better options. You could Close with Hughes against a LH 9th, Or Alzolay a RH 9th. You could save Hughes til later. Horn pitched really well in AA and the AFL but not sure he’s ready yet. Estrada is the classic flamethrower. Rodriguez has had control issues in the past. Anyway I think they have some internal options but a couple of steady vets that have already pitched well here would be nice. Be kind of a stretch to expect Heuer to come in around June off TJ and close. Probably needs to be worked in slowly IMO.
