2022 Rule 5 Draft Results

By Darragh McDonald | December 7, 2022 at 4:15pm CDT

The 2022 Rule 5 draft will begin at 4pm Central time today at the Winter Meetings in San Diego. This will be the first time since 2019 that the meetings will be held in person, as the 2020 edition was virtual because of the pandemic and the 2021 draft was cancelled entirely due to the lockout.

As a refresher, the Rule 5 draft is a way for players potentially talented enough for the big leagues but blocked by their current clubs to find opportunities elsewhere. Any players that were 18 and under at the time of their original signing and were signed in 2018 or earlier, and any players 19 or older and signed in 2019 or earlier, who are not on a club’s 40-man roster are eligible to be selected in the Rule 5 draft.

The clubs will draft in reverse order of the 2022 standings, with no club obligated to make a selection when it’s their turn. If they do make a pick, they will have to pay $100K to the team they select from. The selected players must stay on the active roster (or injured list) for the entire 2023 season or else be placed on waivers. If they clear waivers, they must be offered back to their original team. They cannot be optioned to the minors. The most recent edition in 2020 saw some notable names move around, such as Akil Baddoo going from the Twins to the Tigers while Garrett Whitlock went from the Yankees to the Red Sox.

This post will be updated with the results as they come in…

Hoping for Pirates to take OF Jordyn Adams from Angels. They need more pure speed. His speed and defense make him easy to stash as 26th man.

looks like Duane Underwood Jr will be looking for another team to play for
With the Bucs taking LHP Jose Hernandez ( Dodgers), someone will need to be waived as the roster was already at 40

Underwood is arbitration eligible this year for the first time

I’m so upset that Boston didn’t protect Thad Ward. He is far along enough is his development that he can easily stay on an MLB roster for the entire 2023 season, whether it be as a starter or reliever. Boston had no reason to protect David Hamilton over Thad Ward. I called this out when they first released their protected list and said this decision is going to come back and bite them. Ward is a very talented pitcher and is ready for the big leagues now. Smart pickup by the Nats.

Also, wondering how the Noah Song claim will work. The last I heard, he still hadn’t received authorization from the Navy to delay his service time and go back to MLB. If they did grant him permission, then I’m not sure how he’ll fare in MLB as his last pitching work for Boston was 2+ years ago for the Lowell Spinners (Low-A ball team which has since been eliminated). Song has immense talent but I doubt he can bi-pass A, A+, AA, AAA with that long of a layoff and stay on a major league 26-man roster all year.

It’s that ketchup and mustard mix that always goes together. Reds got a guy whom is waiting for an opportunity and could very well achieve at the big league level. I was afraid he would be taken in the Rule 5 and I can’t be disappointed in losing him. He wasn’t going to get a chance in Pittsburgh anyways. They will later regret it though

The Yankees have had more players taken over the past five years than any team by a wide margin. They in turn haven’t selected a player since 2012. It’s a function of how they develop swing-and-miss pitchers who can be attractive relievers to other teams. They can’t keep them all. I expect at least two to go today. Will they stick?

They’re acknowledged at being very good at what I suggested. Since they draft at the back end every year, they instead have targeted certain type of pitchers in the mid-rounds who fit into their training program. Almost all show an increase in velocity and an increase in swing and miss with swirly pitches. The Rays and Dodgers are very good at this too. Maybe the O’s are entering the conversation, but I’ll have to see more than one year.

So either guys like Michael King or Ron Marinaccio step into the pen, or they’ll trade for relievers like Peralta and Holmes and instantly make them better. They know which types of pitchers fit into their program. The real beneift though is they take many of these arms and package them at the deadline in trades. Last season it was Sears and Waldichuk and Wesneski, who were on few people’s radar a year ago. They have four or five arms like that already staged for next year. Bloom is trying to copy this model. He’s not quite there yet, which is why he’s been signing relievers. Zach Greene would have been a good one to take from the Yankees this Rule 5, but the Mets grabbed him.

I’ve noticed they tend to sign a lot of pitchers for cheap in the International draft as well, and some of those turn into power arms. Pitchers are almost never among the highest rated (and most expensive) prospects in the Int. draft; they must be very hard to project at those ages. The point is, the Yankees use their financial strength to hand out a lot of modest bonuses to a lot of young unheralded pitchers; and enough eventually work out to make this strategy worthwhile.

In general, I prefer pitchers as Rule 5 picks over position players, since they are easier to carry on the roster. But the Tigers got at least a little bit of value from both kind of picks in Baddoo, Rony Garcia or Reyes.

I saw Ort in person a few times against the O’s . They hit him pretty well.

100 mph fastball is a pitch to work with. He could be a late bloomer and you can option him. I don’t have a problem with the move really. Not terribly impressed with Bloom developing pitchers so far though.

@Bstrowman – You nailed it! Kaleb Ort is over 30 years old and he got absolutely shelled in the majors last season. I can’t believe they held on to him (or protected David Hamilton) instead of Thad Ward. Glaring mistake by Bloom & Co. All I could think of is that they plan to DFA Ort, Hamilton, etc.. once they sign FA’s so they just gambled on leaving Ward unprotected and they lost that bet.

I also like what AJ Politi did for Boston’s minor league teams last season, but you can’t protect everyone I guess. He might be able to stick in the majors this season as well out of the bullpen.

I don’t dissect every single off-season move, any more than someone would stand behind a surgeon questioning every move.

Teams FO’s make multiple moves and one often sets up another. Sometimes I see a pattern developing as they happen, sometimes not. Nevertheless, rosters aren’t frozen on opening day so I find it best to roll with things.

Chaim Bloom is not unilaterally making moves. He has a staff.
They have info that no one here has the slightest idea about, and most decisions are made by some form of consensus.

A lot of teams lost players to the Rule 5 draft this year. Only Red Sox fans are getting bent out of shape about it here in the chatroom (as if they knew anything about those guys anyway). It says little about the Red Sox, but a lot about their fans that post here.

If you didn’t know, Boston is the team that’s the most popular one put on players list of places they can’t be traded to in no-trade contracts, and has been for decades.

Simple rule. You don’t usually protect relief pitchers that you don’t project to help you in the pen this year. There are a few exceptions but Ward isn’t one of them. On the other hand he has a chance to stick with the Nats and make trade-bait status by the all-star break. Which would make it a nice move for them at no cost.

Bloom trades a guy with surplus value in Renfroe for a guy with severe negative value over 2 years in Bradley which also keeps them over the tax affecting their draft and ifa positions all to acquire two prospects who are both ranked lower than the guy he just let go for nothing in Ward.

Know why Bloom didn’t trade him? Probably because no one would give him anything worth a s*** for him. So he left him off the 40 man and someone took him. Bloom and his FO are probably happy they did.

How do you know he doesn’t have a free agent signing or a trade on hold until after the Rule 5 draft. Lots of teams do that.

You just make it up as you go along. I thought you were funny, but I’m tired of it.

So many rule 5 guys are returned. The odds that Boston actually loses all 3 of these guys are pretty damn low. they aren’t all going to stick on a ML roster all year.

@BestScreenName – Thad Ward is a starting pitcher, not a bullpen pitcher. I believe he was coming off TJS this past season so they limited his innings as an opener or sometimes as a reliever, but he has the pitch selection and control to be a starting pitcher for sure. He could be a great addition to the Nats no matter where they end up using him.

Now, Ward is probably gone though.

The Nats pitching is abysmal and they have no reason to not keep a guy with upside unless he proves to be completely not ready.

The other 2 will probably be heading back to Boston. Song is a wildcard because of his status. If he’s not cleared to come back before serving he probably won’t have a MLB career at all. I can’t imagine he sticks in Philly if he is cleared though. They have WS hopes.

This is true, but, I’d expect the Phillies would then just be allowed to put him onto the restricted list.

A rule 5 player can go on the IL, and, I’m not aware of anything that says DD can’t just hold Song on the roster until ST starts, then likewise assign him to the restricted list and free up the spot, for now. His compulsory service at this point and the refusals of the military to grant him that deferment counts.

Song filed another appeal that hasn’t been ruled on to be allowed to play having finished flight school. If I were Song I’d just refuse to be vaccinated so I get discharged anyways not that flight school is over.

The govt should’ve just let him go play.

He could’ve paid off the cost of that education with the signing bonus he could’ve gotten without restrictions.

Restricted list was made to allow teams not to be deprived of contract rights while a player cannot perform for non-disciplinary, non-health related reasons outside club control.

Bloom could’ve 40-manned him to preserve Boston’s right. He didn’t.

DD exercised the Phillies rule 5 rights. Now, as long as boxes are checked, there’s nothing I’m aware of preventing use of the RL

ok but there’s the still issue of the fact that Song hasn’t played professionally at any level in three years. So they’d have to fake an injury or essentially just hot shot him to the majors?

If Sony is able to stay on the restricted list for the full season, I’m quite sure his Rule V requirements would spill over into 2024. In other words, he won’t be free & clear of Philly having to keep him on the 26-man roster for a full season. That will just get delayed one year.

Greene is another one of those pitchers the Yankees breed in the minors now. He had a 33.3% K rate and a 14.6% swinging strike rate in 68 relief innings at AAA. His fastball isn’t exceptional, sitting in the low 90s, but his deception makes it seem like there’s an extra four or five miles on it. Deceptive to hitters. He doesn’t have enough for the Yankees to give him a 40-man spot, but he has enough that he could stick on the Mets as they’re looking at interesting arms to build out the back of their pen.

Rule 5 only cares about draft year and age.

As for how he could help, he was a college arm, not a high school arm when drafted. Being in the military, I don’t think you need to worry a out the physical conditioning aspect.

He may have rust, but, a low leverage reliever situation once off the RL when his deferment comes through should work. He had lots of talent as a college arm.

We’ll see. Maybe the break wasn’t the worst thing for his arm. But I’d think he needs some minor league time to even find his mechanics again.

Also noticed that nobody swooped up Davidson or McCann which is great and I think both are protected from the AAA phase of the draft.

The LV diamond is going to be fun to watch next year with Soderstrom, Gelof, Díaz, McCann, Harris, and Davidson on there. We haven’t a minor league squad this intriguing since the Olson/Pinder/Chapman era back in 17/18.

It works the same way with the 60 Day IL. Rule 5 guys can be placed on the 60, but it doesn’t count toward their time needed on the 26 man roster. Same with the shorter IL as well. I’m not sure the exact number of days required to be on, but I know it is less than a full year.

He’s 32. The Yankees signed him last August, but he didn’t pitch in their system before the end of the year. As someone else noted, he pitched in Mexico last year. The Cards taking him means they must have been scouting him as the Yankees were in Mexico, and figured this was a second opportunity to grab him. Maybe the Yankees purposely didn’t have him pitch hoping he’d slip through the Rule 5, or maybe he didn’t sign until late August. Both teams must have seen something believing he can help in 2023.

Definitely an unusual pick for the Rule 5.

He’s 23 yrs. old with only 199 professional innings. The only stat that jumped out for me was the 1.089 WHIP.
Tigers can use him as a swing guy. Sort of replace Tyler Alexander’s role and let Alexander concentrate on starting.

He had TJ surgery in 2019. He was dominant at times in High A this year and reached AA to end the season. There’s mid rotation potential lurking there. From the Rangers’ perspective, leaving him unprotected was idiocy. The left him exposed yet held onto the hot garbage that is AJ Alexy, Josh Sborz , and John King. They held onto Eli White – who couldn’t hit .200 off of a pitching machine. I thought Daniels’ well earned firing would correct some of this nonsense, but stupidity remains.

I don’t see how Noah Song would even make the ML roster let alone stick on it for an entire season. His only professional work has been at short season A ball, and that was 2 years ago. Even if he continued to pitch and work out while in Navy flight school, I don’t see how he can jump 4 levels with no professional development over the last two seasons.

If the Navy does not allow him to leave, the Phils can put him on the restricted list but I believe his Rule V requirements would just be deferred for one year. He’d have to stay on the 2024 Phil’s roster for the entire year or be offered back to Boston. I love his talent but it’s quite a leap to think he can make the major league roster with such limited experience and so much time off from professional baseball.

GA Sox fan you was very aware of that. What I wasn’t aware of was that you could put him on restriction and could avoid exposing him to the rule 5. I think it was a mistake not to start his clock now and protect him from the rule 5. It might be a moot point because if he doesn’t get a waiver then he will be 30 or 31 when he has completed his service time I believe it’s 6 years. DD pulled of a great move here.

          Agree on DDs great move.

Depending on Song, there ARE ways now to get out of the service, it’s the Aaron Rodgers approach.

Sox don’t care that much about guys being vaccinated or not as they’ve allowed multiple MLB players to skip it and be ineligible in Toronto.

But, now that he isn’t in flight school and is going into active service, the policy remains no shot, no shooting. He’d likely be out this year.

I was thinking the same about Avila. Not sure why he was left unprotected. I’ve heard because he’s a bit older (25), but still. Seems like a lot of talent that they’re giving up for practically nothing.

    NOAH SONG PICK:
    From Scott Lauber:
Interesting pick by #Phillies in Rule 5 Draft: RHP Noah Song, a Red Sox draft pick during Dombrowski’s time there. Song is a Naval Academy grad and doing his active service. He won’t count against 40-man roster or be subject to Rule 5 regulations until his service is completed.

I am so encouraged to know that all 30 MLB teams are so jammed with talent on their 40 Man rosters that only HALF of them even bothered to make a selection in Round One and that all 30 PASSED in Round Two. This only highlights the overwhelming need for a revamping of the Rule 5 draft in general and an update and increase to the antiquated 40 man roster limit.

Increase to 40man limit would have the inverse effect. Teams would protect their next best exposed prospects and you’d wind up with fewer eligible draftees that have mlb-ready talent.

If you want to increase rule 5 picks you lower the 40man limit so less guys are protected.

If you want to increase rule 5 draft success. Make the ML roster 28 and the 40 man a 41 man.

Guys will then make it. Spread more wealth around to more guys too.

I don’t think the rule 5 is terribly broken how it is though. It’s for a select few players who don’t get opportunities in their current orgs.

I’d say, due to all the injuries at the MLB level and all the shuttling of players from the minors to MLB, along with a plethora of DFA to clear 40 man roster space so players not on the 40 man can be brought up to the majors to cover for injuries that the MLB rosters should be 30 and the team roster limits set at 45. There are ways to still tweak those limits and player availability with respect to using factors such as timing = After the end of the WS but before the rule 5, not having rule 5 players count until the season begins, MLB roster limits fluctuate as the season progresses, and lower revenue teams have a higher “40 man” roster limit since they are more reliant on building from within and/or 40 man roster limit reductions based on free agents (based on the compensation level for those players signed) that are signed to the roster with reform of the current IL system – just because the season ends, doesn’t mean players stop being injured, so subject to periodic independent review by qualified medical professionals, players remain on the IL until such time that they can resume baseball activities (subject to a specific definition of what that means).

Kinda gives me pause to see winning teams like the Dodgers be more active in the minor league phase. It’s cost money to pick so I suppose you have to be confident in the selections.

Notice the Phillies…..are still picking people. I think they want to win and are utilizing every possible scrap to do it with.

Rodriguez inked a minor-league deal with the Yankees in August but didn’t pitch in the organization in 2022 before being grabbed by the Cardinals. The 32-year-old hasn’t been in affiliated baseball since 2015, when he covered 10.2 innings at the Triple-A level. The 32-year-old most recently worked in the Mexican League over the summer and had a 2.01 ERA and 73:13 K:BB across 44.2 innings.

One pick and the rangers could have had Englert back (I’m sure it doesn’t work that way). But he is no joke, if you’re not worried about a game or 2 in the standings, which is easier said and done in like August when the writing is on the wall, keep him on your roster.
